    Default Simpsons v Seinfeld

Spenda said this was dumb, so I said he's dumb.

Assume the simspon's hadn't started sucking yet.

people should have to state their age with their vote

    22, Seinfeld
  3. #3
I can't make that assumption. To me they were equally brilliant and influential shows in their prime, but "The Simpsons" tarnished its legacy with many years of sucking. "Seinfeld" didn't even come close to falling off that hard - their worst seasons (the last couple) were still pretty good and gave the world David Puddy.

    So yeah, "Seinfeld" for me.

    22, Seinfeld

You can't just ignore 10 years of sucking. In it's prime, there was nothing better than the Simpsons but this was maybe a 5-6 year window.

20, both. wtf does your age have to do with it? they are different shows, so its not like you can compare them very well. simpsons had tons of allusions to the bible, politics, history, etc. that a lot of people dont get (myself included, i dont get a lot of their jokes). but thats what made it so great, you could have an iq of 85 or 150, and still find it hilarious.

if you're 22 you were in 6th grade when seinfeld went off the air. Maybe this is dumb.

BTW, if you enjoy the simspons, but think seinfeld is better you should still vote both. To pick one or the other I was looking for a meh.

35 and I say Seinfeld because it has passed the hardest test of them all - Generation bridging!! But I do LOVE The Simpsons!

P.S. I feel old now. Could I be the oldest poster here?

Seinfeld ran for 9 seasons and was damn good for 7 of them. The Simpsons ran for twice as many and was good for ~8 of them. Not a good percentage imo.

assuming it didn't start sucking makes it hard.

seinfeld was written better, way better, but simpsons brought us homer.

overall, id hafta say seinfeld because it stood out in most aspects, many of which most shows suck at, but it is tough since homer was ridiculously funny. way funnier than george or kramer alone.

the real question is: curb or seinfeld. because you know they're both larry david.

    i say curb

    edit: oh and 25

26, seinfeld. i only watched the last like 4 seasons when it aired originally but have definitly seen them all on reruns. Agree with silu about it winning for the ability to bridge generations too.

For me it comes down to rewatchability (and if that is not a word, then I just made that up). There are a couple of seinfeld episodes that I can still watch , but I will not seek them out. There are a large number of simpsons episodes that I will watch relentlessly every time they come on, and will actively seek them out, and set time aside to watch them.

dude the simpsons is soooo much more than homer. chief wiggum is fucking great, every burns episode is great, fat tony is great, patty and selma were great, Snake is great. the list goes on. it is stupid to say that seinfeld is better written for a couple reasons. 1) they are trying to do different things. i.e. seinfeld is more clever and witty and makes a lot of jokes about everyday life, as well as sex and relationships. the simpsons make fun of the bible and tons of other things and people using historical references, as well as saying shit thats stupid but really funny. 2) given #1, you dont have to be very intelligent to understand all the jokes in seinfeld, you just basically need to be a human being that functions in society. to understand all the jokes in. the simpsons, you have to be pretty fucking well educated and intelligent. but its also funny for people who arent historical genious'.

therefore, if i were to pick one, i would say simpsons is better written, because of its ability to mix in flat out funny shit with great historical references. BUT, i still stand by my original statement that you cant really compare the two because the make light of different things, and have different goals.

what really tilts me is when someone says something like, " oh dude, i love the simpsons, i watch it every week." its like, bitch, those episodes suck balls. its people like you who keep it on air.

    i both shows

and wat is all this generation bridging talk?

Both were great shows. I like Seinfeld episodes now better than Simpsons, though I think I probably enjoyed Simpsons better in its prime, when new episodes were coming out every week. MUCH to its credit Seinfeld had the class to quit before it started to go really downwhill, which almost never happens when you think about it. Last several years of Simpsons have been very lame.

    fwiw 39.

in all fairness to the simpsons, the show only really started to go downhill after phil hartman died. they lost a lot of great charcters with his passing. and by going downhill, we must realize that this is just compared to its prior glory. a bad simpsons episode is still better than most of the stuff on tv today. it seems to be making a bit of a comeback lately though.

the social and political satire in the simpsons makes it, imo, a better written show overall. add in the great quotability factor, and it's no contest.

I am sure if more older people gave the simpsons a chance, it would also have the ability to bridge generations.

FWIW, I am 29 and believe that I have seen every seinfeld episode, and almost all of the simpsons episodes, at least twice for both.

also, the reason you are able to make references with your bro and father or whoever, is because seinfeld is on tv like 5 times a day on various channels.

100%. Family Guy's funny, but it's not well written. You can tell they think of jokes, then hastily make a story to somehow tie them into an episode.

yeah i would take family guy over simpsons that have been made in the family guy era, but not seasons 1-9 of the simpsons. as galapagos said, its not written nearly as well. i love the 2 part south park episode where cartman tries to get family guy off the air.

Here's what's wrong with "The Simpsons," and why I felt a moral duty to ignore the OP's criteria.

    http://specialagentdalecooper.wordpr...00-shark-free/

(Yeah that's me. I happened to write this just like a week ago... seems quite fitting now.)

However I would add this: even if we are only comparing the shows in their prime, "Seinfeld" is a little better and has better longevity for me. But it's really close. Both shows were very creative and broke new ground, and both packed in dozens of belly laughs per episode. (It's interesting though that "The Simpsons" spawned a horde of imitators, most notably "Family Guy," while "Seinfeld" spawned almost none - unless you count virtual spin-off show "Curb Your Enthusiasm." And even that is a quite different beast. A few other shows cribbed "Seinfeld"'s catchphrases and basic friends-in-the-big-city-who-refuse-to-grow-up premise, but they missed its shallow, snarky soul by a mile.)

    No warpe you're not.

Ok, I started this thread because I had a theory. From my experience with people currently in the 26-32 age range, they either like seinfeld or simpsons, but not both. Obv my theory is disproved here.

Family guy vs Simpsons doesn't work at all. Family guy is better, but it's second generation. It's like comparing Metal Gear Solid with Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.

    25, seinfeld.

I watched every episode of the simpson from kindergarten up to being an adult though, and I used to have a ton of Bart Simpson tshirts and had all of his rap tapes.

It's really not fair to ask this now, but Seinfeld is just more enjoyable in syndication.

My beef with sienfeld is that they talk about the same shit you would talk about with a group of friends (assuming your friends don't suck major balls).

American Dad is hit or miss, but when it's on it's amazing.

A few other shows cribbed "Seinfeld"'s catchphrases and basic friends-in-the-big-city-who-refuse-to-grow-up premise, but they missed its shallow, snarky soul by a mile.)
wow man, that was a really awesome article. I really liked the sort of rambling/rant style that it carries throughout it. Also I agree with what you said, and I love giordanos . Youre from chicago I take it?
You-- yes, you-- you're a cunt.
