    Default Sleep Decision

Assuming you have had a full, moderately paced day. You woke up in the morning around 8 or so. It is now 3am, and you have been awake 19 hours. Tomorrow (well, technically today) you will be up at 7am, but you can't go to sleep just yet, you have a bit of work left to do. Tomorrow is going to be another moderately paced day.

I want to know if I'm alone in my usual decision that sleeping for any amount of time under a few hours, after a long day, generally fucks me up worse than just staying up. I'm a student and I always hear people saying 'ohh i only slept 2 hours last night.' I think it's pointless.

    As pointless as this thread.

New bond movie was average at best.

Totally agree, sleep deprivation screws with us more than we can possibly know.

Im arguing that after being up for the day, and you are in a spot where you could sleep for two hours max and have to get up, or just stay up and let the days melt together, i usually like the latter over the former

Meh misread. I like the latter over the former as well. Its beneficial to let your body revive itself for just a little bit than not at all. If you can squeeze in a 2-3 hour nap it helps an awful lot.

So yeah I agree as well.

I prefer to stay up because I may actually feel like shit if I get up after 2 hours

i choose to take a power nap (2 hours or less) in this case 100% of the time. Even if you dont think it helps, some sleep will refresh your body more than you think.

I feel much worse if I take the 2 hours of sleep, much like a hangover

I don't remember an extended period of time that I've been "well-rested" for nearly 4-5 years. I tend to mentally and physically crash around 5-6pm and around 2-3 pm but I typically catch 2nd and 3rd winds...

In terms of the OP... I think it depends on your sleep schedule the previous nights... If you are well caught up on sleep.. i think staying up may be the thing.. as you can power through that.. if you are regularly getting <5 hours of sleep a night, the power nap is definitely the way to go, because you've trained you body to function on less sleep. But the diff between some and none at that point are huge...

i would take the the sleep

i used to work nights and had this decision a lot but I would always take the sleep. In the short term you feel better (provided you weren't tired on before your sleepless night) and if you can catch up the next night you could probably just stay up to skip the drowsy morning, but if you are busy the next few days you should sleep.

    No hindsight for the blind.
The problem with staying up is that I can never make it through the next day. I tend to crash around ~5pm, wake up again around 1am, and then I'm totally screwed for a week or two until I somehow manage to flip things around again.

    Rinse and repeat.

I used to work nights as well and found it's best to take the little nap every time. Waking up is hard, but once you're up you'll feel better later on than you would if you stayed up.

sleep cycles are typically 3 hours so if you could get 3 that would be best. If not maybe try a 20 min nap, that's supposed to temporarily recharge your system without you entering the sleep phase where you're really groggy. Except I can never get up after 20 min so this doesn't work for me.

Oh good god... it's like me 5 years ago.

    Anyway...

I've seen studies that suggest that less than 4 hours does you no good anyway, but I've never been able to actually get less than 4 hours no matter how important it is.

If I tried to take a powernap 2 hours before my wedding I'd have slept through it.
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes

My most recent experience in this area was a 74 hour straight stretch of work, where I was totally exhausted past sleep... I hurt physically and my mental performance was non existant, I literally told the staff that I had to sleep. After a few hours I was 300% better but still not up to my normal capacity, another 8-9 hours of work and I was lucky to go home.

In the college years, I used to run on 3-4 hours of sleep period. Two hours helped more than staying up, as my focus started to drive after about 30 hours straight awake...

So i am a proponent of whatever you can get, even if you feel like shit when you wake up.

I used to go weeks at a time sleeping only 1-3 hours a night. I find after couple hours of sleep I am pretty much just as aware most of the day as I would be if I slept 8 hours. If I skip sleep all together I used to get really tired as the day went on and couldnt function right.

you have to reset your clock somehow. sleeping for a couple hours will definitely help.

You'll be miserable all day tomorrow either way, but if you stay up you may not make it through the day at all.

In my experience it seems that most often it's a decision of when you want to feel miserable. If you don't sleep, you'll feel miserable the next afternoon. If you do sleep, you'll feel miserable when you get up.
