Default So my step dad is an alcoholic.....

He's in his sixties and has had a problem with drink for a number of years but recently things have got worse.

He went on a bender approximately 32 hours ago and is lying naked on his uncovered bed spouting gibberish. He's stopped taking his medication (probably a good thing), hasn't eaten and has been drinking neat from a now empty Brandy bottle.

My mother is a god fearing christian - save it for another thread Wuf! - and tends to turn a blind eye but after 12 hours or so of cleaning up his shit she's at breaking point.

I'm now at the house and have told my mum to take a break while I watch over him.

    What's my play?

I should say that we've spoken to a doctor who essentially isn't interested unless my step father wants help.

Also should have mentioned, if it wasn't already obvious, that entire family routine has been thrown into turmoil over last couple of days.

    Heavy shit FTR! vote! vote!

Can we assume this is a step-dad you care so little for that we can have fun at his expense or a step-dad whom you wish to repair and live a full and long life with?

I voted 'wait until he's sober' etc, but I really think the correct play here is the standard one. If it were my mother, I'd want to make sure the man she spends so much time with is of clear mind and in control of his vices.

Once he sobers up, it's time for a frank discussion with the man; if he refuses to quit alcohol, it's time to kick his ass to the curb, for the good of the family.

I think it's safe to say that the line has been crossed too many times for me to give a shit.

I mean, seriously, I may have to take a day off work tomorrow to sort this shit!!

Got one "in the can" but the quality isn't great and listening back to it, it's not especially entertaining. The prick can't even get that right.

He's now snoring so the fun maybe over. If he's still out of it when I finish my cup of tea then I'm calling a cab.

Back in the morning to kick his ass then I guess.

Yeah this is basically the plan. First time that my Mum has ever drawn the line and said "no more". So, I'm back this morning to try and sort it out.

He's agreed to getting help. The main issue at the moment is that he has the mother of all hangovers / beer sweats. Along with other medical issues he has, getting down the stairs is going to be like running a marathon for him.

Got some vitamin supplements from the doctor to help replace food that he hasn't had. When he's up to it, we're going to have to visit a clinic somewhere. I have some numbers.

What a fun day this isn't going to be.

When he is sober, apparently he is a decent man or your mom wouldn't tolerate his behavior. If he doesnt get help this time, then next time: Video his drunken stupor and when he sobers up, have an intervention and force him to watch it. If that doesn't influence him to seek help, then the decision rests with your mom on her next course of action.

No one can force him into rehab until he is ready, otherwise it is a waste of time. money and won't last.

Alcoholism is a disease and like any disease there are things that can be controlled and can't. However, like any disease you need to take steps to treating or at least minimizing negative effects. If someone had a disease that prevented them from walking, which somehow negatively affected you (I'm making a stretch here), you wouldn't kick their ass. Kicking their ass wouldn't help them walk...kicking an alcoholics ass won't make them stop drinking. It's a very long, enduring (sometimes never ending) battle that takes patience, understanding, and effort. While there are many programs out there for alcoholics (12 step programs, etc) this is obviously something that has to start with the alcoholic wanting treatment. However, there are many support systems for those affected by Alcoholics. I would suggest you look here,

    Welcome to Al-Anon and Alateen,

before pursuing any solutions (violent or peaceful) to a problem you clearly don't understand.

Bless you Bigred, you're just the cutest. Yeah, heard about al-anon and I think we need to get my mum some counselling too.

Thread was largely a joke to lighten the mood of a shitty day. I know what's going on and my Mum has lived with it for 20+ years.

Anyways, initial counselling session done. Actually prescribed a small amount of alcohol as cold turkey could kill him.

Seeing GP first thing in the morning who should be able to prescribe a medical comedown. He's been referred to a detox clinic and will now get regular counselling.

He's now asking for help and really wants to try. What happens next depends on him but with our complete support as long as he's staying clean.

    /thread I guess.

Thanks for the diversion and lovin' FTR.

Alcoholism is a disease, in the same way that jerking off is making love. In the end, you're still doing it to yourself.

what is this "mum" of which you speak? is it a cute brittishism for your kiester? if so the way you personify your rear end is weird, and given the severity of the context, quite disturbing. you may be the one who needs help

Involuntary internet meme would have been my choice, but rehab sounds good as well. No reason not to do both, but what's done is done I guess.
