    Default songs

    Just a random thought:

I was listening to Tool on the way to school today as I often am, and I realized that Third Eye is the most beautiful song ever written by a human. I also realized that its not really close, either.

It's the last song on the Ænima album fwiw.

Please post other candidates for best modern song, so I may refute them and shoot you like dog.

Anyhoo, I vote "Surf" by Roddy Frame. The track isn't new (2002 I think) but it's currently on MySpace and I heartily prod all to give it a listen. I honestly think it's one of the best songs ever written.

Re-reading this, best modern song is a bit of a loose description. I mentioned Roddy Frame after reading your "most beautiful song" bit.

you guys need to go out, buy Ænima, get in a car with a decent sound system, or get a good pair of headphones, and turn the volume up to the threshold of pain, then prepare to transcend your physical bodies.

Let me know how it goes.

It's not a new track, it's on "Execution of All Things", a really good album overall. I think it was the album that came out right before "More Adventurous".

Haven't listened to "Third Eye" in a while, putting it on right now.

"Three Libras" by APC is one of my favorite songs ever. It gets my vote.

That's a good song, probably my second favorite by them. Or maybe "Blue" is, I was so addicted to that song for a long time. My itunes says I've played it over 120 times

Hah. Orestes and Third Eye are my favorite two songs by the Maynard bands.

But Dredg is my favorite band, and I can point you to any number of songs by them that are just amazing...The Canyon Behind Her, Whoa is Me, Sanzen are three to get you started.

A lot of Tool songs fit into this category.

Eulogy is one of my favorites along with The Pot and Ticks & Leeches. 10,000 days (Wing Pt 2) is awesome as well.

I still think the best listen you will ever have is The Fragile album by NIN. It's like one flowing song over 20+ tracks. Lateralus by Tool is right behind.

I really can't choose a best song though, depending on my mood it's Lithium by Nirvana, The Frail live version from AATCHB transition into the Wretched, and the Parabol/Parabola combo by Tool is really awesome. Those are my tops. Childhood bests are definately When I come Around by Green Day and Bullet with Butterfly Wings by the Pumpkins.

The Sneaker Pimps album is quite good for one of those "flow into another song" cds. Over before you know it, in a good way.

The Metallica S&M album is phenomenal as well. Listen to it, with headphones, and you don't listen to the guitars or vocals but let your mind relax and concentrate on the orchestra. Some of it is really quite amazing and on the 15th listen you'll still be picking out little nuances you never noticed on listens 1-14.

most beautiful song ever written would have to go to Pink Floyd with either Wish you were here, or what is probably my personal favourite The great gig in the sky. no lyrics in that one really, but still great.

If we're talking Pink Floyd, that's a really difficult choice, but I might have to go with Comfortably Numb, but a lot of the reason I choose that is for the lyrics. Talking on a purely instrumental level, I'd choose something different, but I can't decide.

    Yay!

I've always wondered what "Walk in the Park" is about. Has anyone ever asked them? Do you find it sad or happy? It sounds sad-ish at first, but it kind of ends with happy or hopeful sounds.

Another song I really love is "Everlong", but it has to be acoustic. I've never really liked the Foo Fighters, but I think that song is just really beautiful. It has to be an acoustic version though.

The entire album El Cielo is based around Sleep Paralysis, which if you've never heard of is a condition where you become paralyzed in the midst of sleep or when you're just about to wake up, and you feel evil presences lingering around you or see really odd imagery...Walk in the Park is off El Cielo, but here's all I found off their main fansite's album analysis:

This track, "Walk in the Park" was written by Dino, it was written in an effort to capture one of his personal dreams, which fits with the concept of the album.
Save your stories 'cuz they're all the same..

Dashboards older stuff in alot more down than their other stuff. Doesnt take away from the fact that hes still a great singer. I like alot of the deathcab/postal service stuff (same singer). Has lots of strange yet cool lyrics.

Dashboard is pretty emo, pretty , and pretty bad.

But I think you are heavily mis-judging everything else on dsmrolla's list just based on this.

Death Cab is an indie band and a very good one.

Postal Service is one of my favorite bands of all time, and there's not a thing emo about it.

Didn't realize high and whiny constituted for a great singer.

The greatest Tool Song of all time. Jerk-Off from album Opiate.

"Used to be a bunch of assholes that lived in this part of the building here.
But we systematically removed them like you would any kind of termite or
    roach."

Someone told me once that there's a right and wrong.
Punishment was cure for those who dare to cross the line.
But it must not be true for jerk-offs just like you.
And maybe it takes longer to catch a total asshole.
    But I'm tired of waiting.
Someone told me once that there's a right and wrong.
Punishment was cure for those who dare cross the line.
But it must not be true for jerk-offs just like you.
And maybe it's just bullshit. I should play god and shoot you myself.
    Tired of waiting.
    Consequences dictate course of action.
And it doesn't matter what's right.
It's only wrong if you get caught.
If consequences dictate my course of action I should,
I should play god and just shoot you myself.
    Tired of waiting.
    Die.
    Shoot it.
    Kick it.
    Fuck it.
Shoot you in your fuckin' head

Heres the song, and here's the lyric that does it..

Pearl Jam - Black (I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star.. in somebody elses sky.. why, why why..)

Metallica - No Leaf Clover (And it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel.. is just a freight train coming your way)

A Perfect Circle - Magdalena (no real lyric here, but the imagery he uses to describe giving a stripper a dollar is fucking awesome)
<Staxalax> Honestly, #flopturnriver is the one thing that has improved my game the most.

I think that its way too difficult to pick out a best song of all time since as you grow older your taste in music really tends to change, like when I was in junior high-the begining of high school i really liked blink 182 and some other shit like that or also eminem, and now I listen to that sort of music very seldomly and have found better things such as maynord, though even when i was in highschool alot of my older friends had a real affinity for tool, and I haven't begun to really appreciate them until this year. funny how I could almost gurantee dsmoralla is in his teenage years and probably still in highschool

Music is also such an emotional thing that when your in one mood a song will be amazing and later when your felling better/worst the song might not be so good.

One of my friends in high school went through a short-lived but intense nietzsche/NIN phase. He bought every single NIN album (to add to his collection of every single Oasis album that he aquired during some other weird phase the year prior) and spent almost all of his time reading Nietzsche and listening to his NIN collection. That was interesting.

I really have trouble understanding people who 'have a band.' Same thing for people who treat one rapper like a diety.. so much good music out there, its so sad when people miss out because they have to be fanboys..

    Tool - Third Eye Lyrics
"See, I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really
do, and if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us,
do me a favor. Go home tonight and take all your albums, all
your tapes, and all your CDs and burn 'em. Cause you know what?
The musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced
your lives throughout the years? Rrrrreal fuckin' high on
    drugs."

"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely
energy condensed into a slow vibration, that we are all one
consciousness, experiencing itself subjectively, there's no such
thing as death, life is only a dream, in which is an imagination
of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

"It's not a war on drugs, it's a war on personal freedom, is
what it is, okay? Keep that in mind at all times. Thank
    you."

    Dreaming of that face again.
It's bright and blue and shimmering.
    Grinning wide
And comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes.

    On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
    Rising up
And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.

In... Out... In... Out... In... Out...

A child's rhyme stuck in my head.
It said that life is but a dream.
I've spent so many years in question
to find I've known this all along.

    "So good to see you.
    I've missed you so much.
    So glad it's over.
    I've missed you so much
Came out to watch you play.
    Why are you running?"

Shroud-ing all the ground around me
Is this holy crow above me.
Black as holes within a memory
And blue as our new second sun.
I stick my hand into his shadow
To pull the pieces from the sand.
    Which I attempt to reassemble
To see just who I might have been.
I do not recognize the vessel,
But the eyes seem so familiar.
    Like phosphorescent desert buttons
    Singing one familiar song...

    "So good to see you.
    I've missed you so much.
    So glad it's over.
    I've missed you so much.
Came out to watch you play.
    Why are you running away?"

    Prying open my third eye.
So good to see you once again.
I thought that you were hiding.
And you thought that I had run away.
    Chasing the tail of dogma.
I opened my eye and there we were.

So good to see you once again
I thought that you were hiding from me.
And you thought that I had run away.
Chasing a trail of smoke and reason.

    Prying open my third eye.

    I wasn't moved, but I'll listen again??

His voice is so good in third eye. I love Maynard's voice. Someone described it as "ghastly and angelic at the same time", I'd have to agree.

mrhappy, remember that turning the volume up to threshold of pain is an important part.

That song is like a great movie. It has a first act, a build up, a climax, a crescendo, a denouement, and another climax. amazing
