I have a few points of my own. Some guys will probably be pissed at me for breaking rank, but I have never been one to have to argue a side. I just call it like I see it.
First, my post is mostly/entirely directed at somewhat civilized first world countries. If you live in an area of the world under sharia law for example, where adultery can get you stoned, showing your face could mean you are subject to a brutal attack, or an area of the world where being on the wrong bus at the wrong time could put you at risk of being gang-raped and beaten, let's just declare this argument over and done with and say that it is better to be a guy.
- Spoon brings up some good points re: rape accusations. I'm not going to get too deeply into that as it's only a small subset of why I think it is generally better to be male than female, but when looking at rape as a whole it is obviously better to be male than female. Nearly all rape involves a male or several male perpetrators. Interesting anecdote, I have a very good friend who is an attorney. We have talked about this exact subject before, and she painted a very different picture of a female who had been legitimately raped. The way she explained it is that the female is essentially put on trial herself, with her past sexual history brought into question (i.e. she is made to look like a whore), any inconsistencies ruthlessly questioned, if she was drinking/drunk then credibility in many situations is nonexistant, etc.
It is just hard to convict someone beyond a reasonable doubt, as it should be. The burden of proof is much lower in civil cases, but ironically, whether or not police investigate, a prosecutor prosecutes, or a jury convicts weighs heavily even in those cases. That's not that I say that I disagree with Spoon, he is definitely right on a lot of his points, and given that false accusations can ruin mens' lives, they should be treated as such. I am trying to look at more of a macro level here.
- PMS and childbirth. No need to go into the emotional and physical hilarity here.
- Women take on the risk of pregnancy and are more likely to contract STDs during sex.
- Men are usually bigger, and nearly always faster and stronger. This has certain uses in athletics, general life (carrying stuff, moving, yard work etc.), and for reasons of self protection. Women travel in pairs or packs for a reason.
- Men who sleep with a lot of women tend not to be looked down on and are often praised. The reverse is definitely not true. Actually the 'number' topic comes up on occasion (never from me.) I have noticed that with my female friends and past girlfriends, the number is almost always lower than it is with my male friends, and by a significant amount. Things that make you go hmmm...
- Food wise men have it easier. This largely comes from my fitness side, I just have noticed that all things considered, men can usually get away with being more liberal with their food intake and activity that goes beyond scaling for bodyweight. Probably some combination of the general societal attitude discouraging women from training hard/with heavy weights, emotional eating that comes with fluctuating hormones, the high priority of looks for women, and the fairly narrow range that is healthy, attractive, and socially acceptable from both ends of the spectrum (and yes that body does exist, so stop using the notion that it doesn't to excuse being fat.)
- One thing I have often heard is that it's better to be female because they often get hit on and they can get laid whenever they want. In practice I am not so sure that this is a good thing. Past a certain point it is annoying, and all things considered there just isn't a tremendous amount of desireable men out there (from a woman's POV, this is another topic entirely.) Actually I can't imagine what it is like for a somewhat attractive female, when seemingly every bum, creeper, and dirty old man views you as a sexual object and hits on you relentlessly.
That gets into the 'how we age' thing as well. Somebody else can spell that one out if needed-- I suspect that it won't be.
This isn't even getting into work environments, or any number of other situations. There is still a ton to add to the above. Maybe donkbee or chelle can chime in.
There are some caveats of course. Rather than type them out, I would rather just defer to Spoon and Renton's posts. Hopefully they add more as well.
Two things I will definitely conceed, short guys can have it pretty rough, and lazy guys have it pretty rough (lazy attractive woman in comparison can get by comparatively easy.) In that sense maybe it is a lower floor, higher ceiling type of thing
And there really isn't any motivation here. It's not meant as a feminist post or anything like that. Like I mentioned before, I'm just calling it like I see it, and that is certainly influenced by my personal experiences and what not. Apologies for anywhere I stepped over the line, or as the case may be, gave an accurate reality check.
