Loud kids don't tilt me as much as they tilt other people.

Also, some people like the toilet paper rolling out a certain way (on top vs under). I don't care whether it is one way or the other.

    lol yeah, good times.

I'm riding the bus home from work and get a call that my father in law will be picking me up at the bus station instead of my wife, she accidentally cut herself and is at the ER. I'm thinking "OK, that sucks. She'll be getting stitches and we'll be there all night."

I get there and find out that she'd been in the back yard and (this part is hard to explain, I'm not quite sure I can fully picture it myself) accidentally stepped backwards into the broken off rim of one of those red clay plant pots. Her foot got stuck and when she tried to pull it out, the edge (not jagged, but apparently sharp) dug right in to the back of her ankle and cut deep. Luckily her dad was here at the time so she had someone to yell for. Otherwise it was just her and our 8 year old son.

Our backyard looked like a crime scene with all the blood everywhere.

They ran an MRI and found that it was fully severed and required surgery. She has since had the surgery, let it heal for about 2 months, and now is in physical therapy.

We're up into the neighborhood of $50k in ER, surgery, follow up appointments, and PT. To put that into perspective, I make about $30k/year before taxes and have no health insurance for anyone but my son (thanks to the state on that one). They have a charity system that you can apply for. The line for a family of three getting it covered 100% is right about $30k. Apparently we are JUST poor enough. If we had been over that line, they'd have still covered %75, but even having $12k+ in unexpected medical bills would have absolutely killed us.

My other stroke of luck was having a job that allowed me to work from home for a while so that I could be around to help. A job without that option would have have made things even harder.

Also, every time she complains about it hurting, I remind her about all the chores I've had to do since she became a gimp. I think she really appreciates that perspective on things.

One of my longest back-of-my-mind-fears is severing my achilles tendon.
