I'm actually a little offended by the use of the word nigger (in a serious context; if it's part of a joke, it's cool).

But if its just some buddies and your joking around it shouldn't be a big deal if the word happens to slip.

The point has already been made that it is offensive when used in a serious context. You knew we weren't talking about joking; don't hide behind that.

I had a gf in high school that cheated on me with another dude an eventually started dating after I broke up with her and now me and him are actually pretty good friends so...

Living in Michigan made you into an idiot that apparently doesn't know much of other cultures. Move to a big city dude. Make friends with people of all races. Eat some Indian food (actually, that is totally unrelated, I just enjoy Indian food). You'll understand that there's a bunch of shit that offends every which race and you'll EVEN get to talk to a person of that race to understand why (imagine that, talking to OTHER races?).

And don't tell me you're friends with folk of other races. Michigan has all white and black people. The diversity sucks there.

nigger derives from negro which is the spanish/portuguese word meaning black. so nigger does just literally mean black.

man read my post till the end, that's basically what i'm saying. a word means whatever the intent of its use is. in this case the word is tied to racial hatred. the idea of using skin colour as a way of categorizing people in itself creates a false impression that you can use skin colour to put people into meaningful categories, but unfortunately today still calling somebody "black" or "white" is considered ok.

edit: ok reading my post again it does seem contradictory at one point which causes confusion. pardon me, it's been fixed.
