But I would like this question answered from past waiters/waitresses.

1)Would you agree that waiters accross the board do a simlar amount of work (i.e IHOP versus Steak House)?

2)If yes, then why does the price of the food determine the wages of said waiter/waitress? That just seems downright silly to me....that just because a waiter delivers T-Bones instead of Pancakes they are entitled to upwards of $10-20 more per table

But if question no.1 is false, I geuss this holds no validity.

No, they do not do the same amount of work. At a high end place servers have to be spotless, thier work clothes get dry cleaned. They also need to have a higher general education. They need to know how to talk to people, they cant just be any ol' jerk off the street. A server at a high end restauraunt does all the things that you dont ever notice that make your dining expeirence enjoyable.

A manager at a dennys is not going to be hounding his servers because they dont have proper manicures. No ones getting fired if they come into work and thier hair is a mess. These people arent going to get fired for holding a glass by the rim instead down by the base.

There are a lot of things that go into being a really good server that you never notice, but these things that you never notice are the things that make eating out truly enjoyable IMO.

Yeah, that and they also need to be very knowledgeable about food. A lot of times at a really nice restaurant, customers will ask their waiter to recommend an entree or ask what glass of wine goes well with their food. At IHOP your waiter could barely speak English and it wouldn't really matter.

mactdog yah, if you a customer asks you if talapia is a mild fish, you need to know that. If they ask you the difference between the filet and the sirloin, you better fucking know.

at IHOP I wouldnt be suprised if my server didnt know the different between rare and well... (seriously)

When I lived on campus as an undergrad we would order Gumby's Pizza all the time (I'm sure some people know what I'm talking about). Well the store location was like practically on the campus. Not only that but since every other person ordered it they would wait until they had like 5-6 orders at least before would send a driver over. Then in addition to that they would only go certain spots that were convenient to several dorms then call people to come out and pick up their Pokey Sticks or whatever. I always tipped those fuckers $1. No more, no less. 1) They dealt with drunk college students all the time so they all had attitudes regardless if you were actually rude to them or not. 2) They drove 300 yards to deliver it. 3) They made you wait a little longer until they had multiple orders. 4) They didn't actually deliver to you door. 5) Even if everyone only gave $1, with so many orders on one delivery they were still making good money.

Its not my fault they work a shitty job that is dependant on tips. Tipping is -EV
At first I thought you were kidding, but this is sad dude. No offense.

Some places are starting to include tip. Like wtf at pizza pizza theyre charging a $3 delivery charge, ontop of a $20 minimum order, and the driver still wants a tip and i always give him one cuz im a tipper. But really, wtf is that $3 charge for if im already going to pay the deilvererererer?

One of the first times I'll dissagree with you biondino. If they have no tip to work for, how fast do you think they are going to go. The tip is insurance of service. It is what makes the industry worth working in. Most service type jobs would never be able to pay $15+ an hour. If every waiter and waitress were making a good wage your meal would be $50 plus $8 beers and it would cost $100 or more for a meal at any run of the mill restaurant to pay the labour. If they had no tipping who would work there for minimum or $1 or $2 over the minimum. Tipping is what keeps them in the industry, it's not just the money, it's how most get thanked for the great service. That's why you never tip a std. amount, it must be based on the service. For example, I never tip a bartender at the bar the same for opening a beer I had to go and get the same as what I tip a waitress that get's it for me. And I never, ever not tip. I always leave something so they know that when the service is bad they get some small change and a note to tell them exactly why. I let them know that I'm not cheap , they suck. Most of the time when people don't tip the bad servers blame the cheap customer not their fuckin' attitude they should check at the door.
I wouldn't call the restaurants assholes for paying $2.13. It's just the nature of the beast here--don't know how it started, but that's how it is. Anyway, don't you live in England, Biondino?

And Trainer, IMO you have a kind of strange view of how and why tipping works. No waiter I know is secretly hoping the guy at their third table will see how fast they're working and tip them better for it. B/c they know that people generally tip a certain amount--some people are ultra-generous and some people are ten-percenters. With the exception of in the case of exceptionally bad service, most people tip a certain amount, and no amount of shucking and jiving will get them to tip more. If you really wanted good service in a place you'd never been before, you'd tip before the meal.
Yup, I do live in England but my gf's American so I spend a bit of time over there. Also, it's an argument about principles and practice, I don't need to be involved to have an opinion

I can see what both of you mean - I was more positing an alternative than claiming the current system is unworkable. And as long as the establishment, the waiter/barman and the customer all get value out of the transaction, then I guess it doesn't matter the method by which it happens.

I don't quite agree though that people will never tip well for good service. They will - there aren't a lot of 50% tippers out there, but I'll always be a buck or two more generous if I feel well looked after.

One thing I hate is being out with friends and they know the 10% rule (in the UK that is) but don't even notice if they're rounding down, like say £60 for a £56 meal, something like that. I always end up shoving more cash into the pot to push it above 10%.

I went to IHOP today and my waitress was an un-attractive older woman. She did such a great job that I wish I were able to videotape the performance, so I could give it to my future waitresses so they could watch before they serve me. I tipped 100%.

    2. Sorry for the hijack.

"Oooh I might be beat here. Aww fiddlesticks, guess I'll have to just call down."

"Oooh I might be beat here. Hmm, so its either fold and lose half a month's rent, or call and probably lose a whole month's rent."
you've GOT to give me a link where I can hear/watch this. Especially the second one.

delivery driver, min 3$ usually 5
    haircut- don't know I have a flowbie

breakfast waitress, if their good always gets more.

I like to Tip people if they provide good service 20%-25%
    mediocre service 15%
    bad/poor service 10%
    horrible service .25 cents

I agree with everythign you say. But letting orders stack is common practice for a small buys pizza place. If you do it one pizza at a time and have only one driver (any more is normally not practical for a small place because it will cut to much into profits) things iwll quickly get backed up. Sure the first order might have to wait a big longer, but it makes the wait for the people that call later much less. If 5 orders come in the 5th person ends up waiting probably half the time they would have if the driver did each one at the same time. I do agree though, that is some lazy shit making people walk to get thier food. I might not tip those guys at all... idk..

a delivery charge is NOT a tip. Drivers do NOT receive delivery charges. 3$ is steep for a delivery charge, but that is to offset the cost of employing a driver, you pay for the food, you pay the delivery charge for the service of it being delivered, and then you pay the driver a tip. I honestly think you just havent noticed before, because I dont know of ap lace that doesnt have a delivery charge, its pretty standard.

you know who deserves to be tipped? The fucking Mailman - those guys work hard - Today the guy delivered my mail with 2 of my ebay shirts (versace, of course lol) right to my door....and maybe they would be happier also - Think, even a quarter from every customer would add up pretty big on a daily basis

Yah I absolutely hate fuckers that go out to eat with you and then short on the tip, because its enough that youre being a asshole and not giving hte guy a tip, but to keep from being an asshole myself, I need to make up for your lack of a tip.

I went to the Redsox Yankees game in Boston yesterday. We parked in some lot near the stadium, my brother paid the guy, and I parked the car. When it was time to leave I got this impression I was supposed to tip the guy?? My bro, mother, and wife said no, but I got this feeling from the guy I should have?? It was an Open lot, I self parked and took the keys. I have a P.O.S. minivan. To tip or not to Tip?
