    Default Todays foiled terror plot.

I thought I would get the jump on this story.

midterm Elections are coming up soon and we suddenly have a potential terrorist threat.

zomg I think the republicans are just stirring soething up so they can get more votes.

    Amirite?

[sarcasm]if they wanted that they just should've let their planted "terrorists" fabricate another 9/11 like attack instead of pretending to stop one[/sarcasm]

Well, since anti-immigration xenophobia and gay-bashing didn't poll well, they had to try something--cut them some slack

they had been watching these guys for months.
they catch 'em at the eleventh hour.
why not catch 'em months ago?

our government is showing off to scare us.

and the airlines are in on it. no liquids on the plane? so i can pay ten bucks for a coke? no carry on? does that get better gas mileage?

Yes, Britain organised a mass of raids and disrupted flights to win Bush another term.
Well, no one told us about term-limits.

Incidentally, as I was reading some blog coverage of this today, I came across this sarcastic assessment from TPM Cafe
These are homegrown Brits apparently trying to blow up planes over the Atlantic. Good thing we’ve got 150,000 or so troops in Iraq to take the fight to them.
which pretty much sums my feelings up on the topic.

The war in iraq has alot more to do with just the world terrorist organization...

    You think?

Edited to add: The point of that quote is that the "taking the fight to them" argument for being in Iraq--at one point a favorite Bush administration talking point--is/was totally retarded.

I'm not the type of person to believe in conspiracy theories. This has nothing to do with the election and the Republicans are still going to lose anyway. However, it really bothers me that every time we foil a terrorist plot, the Homeland Security department turns it into a big public spectacle. Obviously, they did a great job of stopping this attack, but why can't they just keep their mouths shut about it? When they explain how they caught these terrorists, other terrorists can use that information to learn how not to get caught in the future. Intelligence is kept secret for a reason.

i don't think there is a lot to keep secret here. They were gonna sneak explosives onto a plane in liquid form and blow them up. People have written books on this type of stuff, its nothing new. They caught them by tapping their phones (ZOMG) and infiltrating their shit so they knew what was going on. I don't think the exact methods they used will be leaked but there's no sense in trying to hide the obvious, otherwise you end up with people trying to argue the pentagon was hit by a missle.

It's actually a really good argument when the war is more then just about terrorists.

    You mean oil, right?

Was the previous poster suggesting invading the UK? Blimey.

Oh, and didn't WE foil these plots, rather than your homeland security dudes?

I just want to say it was a great job by the British forces. The scary thing is, most of these guys were recently recruited British born Muslims? Anyone else thing this Jihad thing sounds more and more like a cult?

It's a terrible argument since they were precisely talking about terrorists and "fighting them over there."

Was the previous poster suggesting invading the UK? Blimey.
Yes, now that British-born muslims are plotting to blow us up, we're going to have to invade your country. Sorry, about that, but you see, we have to fight them "over there" wherever that is...

Like the Saddam thing, huh... Unfortunately, I'm sorry, I can't discuss the subject of airport security with someone called samsonite - conflict of interests you see.

Not really talking about oil at all.

No see, for them, it is a very good argument, because the american people wouldn't allow the war without a reason.

Unfortunately, the cretins they elected would (I include the British public in that obv).

Without wanting to detract from this thread, what precisely is the reason thousands of Americans are dying in Iraq, assuming oil is take as read/conveniently ignored (delete as politiciall inclined)?

List of reasons, in roughly chronological order:

    1) Saddam has WMD!
    2) We're taking the fight to them over there!
    3) Freedom is on the march!
    4) The insurgency will fail soon, we just need to stick it out.
    5) Iraq is too important to let fall into chaos.

Are we still at number 5, or is there another rationale now?
  24. #24
    6) Israel is at war. We need to stay in Iraq to keep an eye on Iran.

IMO, most people are just beginning to see the depth of the problem we are facing. Terrorists aren't just going to go away because you leave them alone, and europe and the U.N. can talk with these countries until they're blue in the face (see: iraq, iran), they will not listen, and they will continue with their hateful ways, until there is a breaking point.

It's not anti-immigration. It's anti-illegal immigration. With so many legitimate reaons for controlling immigration, I hardly think it's xenophobic either.

Oh, no--Tom Tancredo isn't xenophobic at all.

Fwiw, I'm pro-immigration reform but the GOP's atttempt to use it as the latest in their neverending string of wedge issues was as transparent as it was ineffective. Notice how when the issue didn't poll well, the republican media assualt about immigration reform died a quick death.

Doggz, no bashing involved but I do think the Iraq war is mainly about oil, and you're going to need to convince me it's a minor or negligible reason if you're going to change my mind.
