    Default U.S. Open Thread

its a little late, but w/e. who do you guys like after day 1? i definitely think the guy justin hicks will be atop the leader board until day 4, when he will shoot 77.

and spenda, is tiger still a lock at torrey?

Tiger's going to struggle the whole tourney i think (and by that i mean get like 5th LOL). I just can't see someone winning with that long of a break and a bad knee.

bah! All the Canadians are falling apart today.

    Go Tiger I guess...

    Tiger isn't a lock,

He's a lock if he drives the ball well, but that didnt seem to be the case in Round 1 (6/14 fairways)

Craze Phil isnt even carrying a Driver on the longest course in US Open history (I think, discounting when they played it in CO once).

I believe it is the longest course for any Major.

And that was a sick eagle to get Tiger back to even for the day.

Good Lord Phil if you take driver out of the bag you better hit every fairway.

He hit 6 yesterday w/o driver, and he's already missed 3 today. Dude, take a note from Tiger, he blasts it down there so far even if he is in the rough he can scoot the ball up/around the green and use his short game. Your busy leaving yourself 200yds into every par 4 and on top of that you're in the rough.

Im so glad I'm not a Phil fan.
  10. #10
I have a good feeling about Sergio's chances. He was like 6 over thru 7 holes yesterday and now he's +4 thru 2 rounds. This course is made for his ball-striking ability and he's definitely due in the majors.

Look for a charge from the Spaniard

wow what a finish for tiger. just amazing. he used up his luck box with that chip in for birdie on 17 i think. and then that eagle putt on 18 was incredible. he is clearly in a lot of pain. it will be interesting to see how he performs tomorrow.

soft spot from me, too. dude has overcome some serious adversity to stay at/near the top of the world.

side note: tiger has proved me wrong twice...once badly...that he cant win an open. i always thought him too wild from the tee to win one from the rough. but, obv, that doesnt hold past his "blast it, ginch it, finesse it, drain it" record. the only thing i have now is that he hasnt come from behind in one. but, thats crap to hang a hat on, too, now that he has the lead. of course, he could choke/cough up the lead...but he never has done that, either. clearly, he dominates like no other ever has...and thats not likely to stop. i sound like i am banging on tiger, but i actually like him as much as i like nicklaus and jordan. he is truly an amazing athlete that needs injuries and obscurities to motivate himself because the tour simply cant provide adequate competition. TIGER is the "once in a lifetime" athlete we will see. like Ali, Nicklaus to a certain degree, and Jordan, Tiger will only fall when he either gets complacent or old. and, i dont see complacency happening if it hasnt happened by now.

ps...my boy bobby gaus never had a shot. dominates the STL local pro circuit and cant get within 10 of the cut. hmmm, maybe "these guys are good."

    Tiger injured.

    Putt to force a playoff.

    Gotta see the magic tomorrow.

hard not to cheer for Rocco, but Tiger has the mojo. seriously, does this guy EVER miss a clutch moment? none that i've seen.

    - Rocco admitted Tiger would make the putt on 18.
    - Rocco kept saying, "i did all i could do...."
    - Rocco said, "i am in a playoff with the world's number one. we'll see what i can do tomorrow."

Rocco already is showing signs of self-doubt + Tiger factor in full affect on opponent = slim chance for Rocco.

Rocco may pull one out. it wouldnt bother me a bit. but, Tiger already has him intimidated by "The Aura."

Chopper, excuse me but wtf is Rocco Mediate supposed to say about playing Tiger Woods tomorrow? "I'm going to beat his ass he's not that good?" No way he says that. He's speaking truths when he says what he's saying.....if anything because of who he is, his background (didn't even play Division I golf), and other things he'll go in there with a "why not, I made it this far" attitude and maybe pull this off...

Either way, I saw the last five holes on TV and that was some awesome, awesome stuff. I will definitely be watching the playoff tomorrow.

well hopefully tiger wont dig himself in a hole like has at the beginning of every other round this week. imo, its NOT to pull for tiger. after seeing him in grueling pain after every single tee shot and seeing him still force a playoff in a major is unbelievable. thats m.j. shit right there.

plus, how fucking hot is his wife????

    well, hrm, 3 we chop

I don't wanna go 3.5 though, seems too high.

So Tiger wins by 2 or less (or loses) you win. Tiger wins by 4 or more I win. Tiger wins by 3 we chop.

G, i know he is "supposed" to say that stuff. its the classy thing to do. but, it ushers in a self-defeatest attitude that, even if behind, you wont hear Tiger say. the best of the best dont EVER admit they may lose. they simply dont say anything. they dont use words like "lucky to be here" or "i knew he'd make it...he's the best in the world." they just say, "we'll see what tomorrow brings" and leave it at that.

all i am saying is that Rocco allowed negatives to enter his mind. whether he was just being polite or has succumbed to defeat, we'll never know. but, the mind is a terribly powerful thing. and self-fulfilling prophecy is very common in sports.

i know Rocco has a one shot lead right now, but i think...barring miracle...this one was over before it began. and, mostly because anyone going up against tiger psychs themself out the night before.

btw, where's your nunchuck av? i miss that dude. it belongs in the "pics that make me lol" thread.

my guess is he'll be out for the open, and be back for the pga championship. i mean he has a career to think about. that would be the greatest tragedy in sports history if tiger had some horrible knee injury that he never recovered from.

Nobody likes Phil, I've heard a lot of bad things about him from being around tour players past/present from time to time.

For being quite well-off let's just say he's never the first to reach for his wallet. Also, he's supposedly fathered more children than you might see waiting near the green on Sunday.

Greg Norman seems like he can be a bit of a dink too. I was at the Pro Am skins match he was playing in yesterday. He took his shot off the black tee. Apparently only the pros are supposed to shoot from there. Everyone else has to shoot from a weaker tee box. But the next guy up tee'd up on the black and fired a shot. Norman immediately snapped and tore a strip off the course marshal, then picked his ball up and went straight to the next hole refusing to finish that one.

DONT GET ME STARTED ON THIS DSFJDSAFJKLSDAFKLJA

The dude will not answer any questions on his knee, he makes these sly/sarcastic comments and interviews instead of just telling everyone what actually is wrong. I don't get it, it's not like your opponents gain some advantage in golf knowing where you're injured like they might in another sport.

I have no idea why he's dodging the questions, but frankly it's starting to really aggravate me.

its not an injury he cant recover from, will. it was cartilage work. kind of a scope/cleanout, from what i know (very little). but, if it were career threatening, the media would be all over it.

as for the chatter from tiger, he's bellicheking it like a hockey team in the playoffs.

but, we all know a couple weeks of 50 balls a day on the range, 50 4-footers a day on the green, and he'll kill the british by 5 shots.

i just wonder if he has any contractual obligations to show before the next biggie...spenda? heard/know anything about contracted appearances? didnt the buick used to play after the open? i know it changed a few years back (didnt hale irwin win b2b open/buick in '93?), but arent they still close?

edit...buick in two weeks...just looked. being that tiger drives about 1000 of their cars and the buick name is/used to be on the bag, i assume he has some sort of legal work to do to get out of that one? (but, i presume buick would rather have him over the next 10 years instead of hardballing him for this year?)
