NPR right now is doing a story about some doctors in India who will amputate beggars' perfectly-working arms and legs for a fee, y'know ... so they can generate more sympathy and make more money.

Not only is it true, it's a fairly long-standing tradition. Beggars in many countries are in the habit of e.g. breaking their children's arms or legs to garner sympathy. There's also apparently a beggar mafia, where a turf overlord kind of owns a street corner and takes a nip off the top of the beggars' take. And heshe encourage the breaking or amputation of arms to drive up revenue. | |
