what i think we'll find is that negative applications are/will be counter-balanced by positive applications. this is what history has shown us, but curiously when speculating about the future many forget to factor it in
for example, speculations about invisibility encourage people to think that the technology will lead to unstoppable powers of those who wield invisibility cloaks, but this is assuming that we learn nothing about invisibility detection/defense alongside. i believe we'll find that the negatives do not trump the positives just like how advanced killing technologies do not trump forensics and advanced defensive technologies.
we are, however, in for the most amazing time of human history and by far. near-immortality, teleportation, fantasy-virtual actualization, matter manipulation, etc are all things we'll see in our lifetimes. soon enough i expect that our social lives will be almost purely with virtual and/or with robots indistinguishable from real people/society.
