my daughter is quarter black (Mum is mixed race) and half white (my goodself).

I would say my Daughter is mixed race I guess.

People always say "oh, where's her Mum from?"

    Me: "errrrrrrr, Shepherds Bush, London".

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes

it's a proud day for ftr commune when i opened this thread and there hasn't been a single use of the n-word.

on a more serious note: YouTube - Seinfeld. Is he black?

I've gathered that a couple of acceptable terms according to seinfeld are Irish and coffee with a little bit of cream, but saying mixed makes people uncomfortable.

on an actually serious note, all of these seem fine, and i don't think any of them have been deemed as non-pc. there are probably people who are offended by some and prefer others while others feel just the opposite, just like with black/african american

lol who the poop still uses mulatto? Pretty sure that's not very PC anymore, though I don't live in the states. Saw a Curb Your Enthusiasm ep, when larry picks a 'mulatto' doll for someone, so I guessed he was being non PC.

    I'd say mixed race.

Mixed race is still a bit taboo. I prefer their first name or surname, when appropriate.

And kiwimark, I don't know what you're doing, but I know this chick who would get pretty territorial if she heard you say that.

half-black seems to be the first thing that comes to mind for me. Is that offensive?

The country is predominately composed of white people, so the natural nomenclature to describe someone who is half white is to call them half-black, half-korean, whatever.

In the past month Ive had 3 people ask me what my ethnicity is, then when I responded, "Im black and white" They said, "Oh, you're a mulatto?"

Now if that was the preferred nomenclature, I'm pretty sure I would have used it myself. So either they are really dense and unable to infer so much from my answer; or even worse they think that its the proper term, and that I did not know, so they are trying to educate my unfortunate "mulatto" self.

So no, mulatto is not pc, and is most certainly an outdated term.

case in point, quote from wiki entry on mulatto:
Although still in use, in the last half century the term mulatto has fallen out of favor among some people and may be considered offensive by some in the United States. Today the preferred terms are generally biracial, multiracial, mixed-race and multiethnic. Note, for example, that President Barack Obama is never referred to as mulatto, although he had a white American mother and a black Kenyan father.
a little anecdote, about 4 or 5 years ago now, when I was a super fish I ran deep in a 10+1 on stars and was in IRC. Rippy offered to coach me to first, and I accepted.. back then he was pretty well respected on these forums. Anyways, we ended up doing the coaching over the phone, and in the small talk this same conversation happened where he concluded, "oh, so youre mulatto."

Anyways, back to the jokes. There were a few that I didnt see posted that I had expected, but most of all I was surprised to not see "house nigger", esp seeing as spoon has posted in this thread. Also "high-yellow" makes me laugh.

ex-missus so no pics sadly, though I did have some boobage pics somewhere of her.....

Boost - I've never even heard the term Mulatto before. Must be an American thing. What is it meant to mean?

I describe my daughter as mixed race as that is what she is. I'd only be offended if someone called her the n word or was obviosuly racist. Living in London, its such a mixed city it just isn't an issue - everyother child is mixed in someway.

When we go abroad to say France or Spain we get some funny looks as all my family are white, then we have a 9 yo (who goes alot darker in the sun) mixed race girl with us - with a London accent which really freaks them out.

ya, I def see your point, but I also am not sure this is a bad thing. Tbh I typically initially throw out a smart ass answer when they ask "what are you?".. something along the lines of "a college student, how about you?" But when I do answer I tend to answer in a sentence, not one word, for example, "Im black and white" or "my mom is white and my dads black."

But back to it not being such a bad thing.. I think it serves to mock the notion of race being important. On that same basis, I think calling obama "black" is horrible as it is essentially legitimizing the one drop rule.

But race IS kind of important. At the very least it's an aspect of your appearance and being that defines who you are apart from others.
  48. #48
After having been mentioned, I'll determine that 'multiethnic' has the lowest probability of offending anyone

Boost, you're doing it wrong. Don't tell them you're half black or whatever. Tell them you're fucking Chinese or Spanish or Eskimo or some shit. You could probably fool some people with Black Russian. Maybe go with Roman; sounds legit, and nobody really even knows if it's still a thing anymore

Ya, I def do this too. When I was in like 5th grade, one of my friends was going to hebrew school after real school, so being bored and faithless, I tagged along. We told the isreali woman who was teaching the class that I was an ethiopian jew.

I wish I was better with accents, but sadly I am not. But ya, I think my favorite is samoan, just because this is how (for whatever reason) hunter s tompson described dr. gonzo.

your argument seems to be in support of vague wording to describe my race, as most people at best have some vague guess as to what my race is. It probably differs greatly from person to person and from "mix" to "mix" but I know that I dont exactly strongly identify with either my british/polish heritage or my black heritage. Its not to say that I disregard either or both, but I cant really say I have a strong feeling of belonging to either. So where Tryone Washington probably strongly identifies with being a black man, or Tommy McPatty strongly identifies with his irish ancestry, I dont really have any ties like this. Being bi-racial, I did not grow up with a parent who I could racially identify with, nor did I really have much to look to in terms of pop/historical figures. In terms of race, I was sort of on my own. So I feel that racially I probably have more in common with a person born to an irish parent and a korean parent then I do with either a black person or a white person.
  53. #53
    lol wtf, mulatto?

that sounds something a well-meaning but clueless old person would say, sorta like "coloured"

I remember a mate telling me about how his grandma had offended the shit out of someone at a hardware store asking for "nigger brown" paint.. She didn't mean anything bad by it, it's just that it was a standard term for a shade of brown in the 50s and 60s when she was young

I never got an answer from you as to whether you were ok with "half-black".

I saw you suggested it, but didnt think you asked what I thought.

and Id have to say no, unless there was a very specific situation.. like I was with my mom(who is white) and it was clear she was my mom, and my ethnicity came up. Also I feel like this still is acknowledging the one drop rule.

eidt: also I think my previous reply that you quoted answers your question indirectly. I self-identify more with being multi-racial than I do with being black or white.

edit2: all that being said, I probably wouldnt take issue with someone using "half black". It has more of an underlying social implication compared to the more or less overt offensiveness that "mulatto" carries.

The title should be changed to "What is the proper term for a person who is black and white in April of 2010". In 30 years it'll be something different and whatever is "acceptable" now will be "unacceptable" then.

lol, a zebra is more like an underscored donkey

and mulatto sounds like a bad version of italian coffee

    bi-racial has a gay undertone

and mixed sounds like a can of nuts. Mixed with what? Pistachio? Almonds? Cashews?

I wonder when we as a people will start seeing past color and shit. And then, nomenclatures wouldn't be needed, in the same way porn would not be needed if you got at least 1 (but preferably any number more than 1 and less than 5) superhot and willing girlfriends.

Ahhh, who am I kidding, utopias don't exist, and the Swedish blue-eyed blondes who are more and more difficult to find in their natural habitats (which would be the Clubs) lately still pwn the shit out of pretty much any other kind of girl.

Now on to answer the question. In Spanish, "half black half white" people are reffered to as Moreno.
Moreno - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From the first line of that article:
Moreno is Spanish, Portuguese for a tanned or brown-skinned person.
So there. The politically correct answer appears to be either "Tanned Person" or "Brown Skinned Person". I'd go with Brown Skinned Person, which appears to be totally harmless and inoffensive, and gets the job done. AFAIK, "Brown Skinned Person" was never used as a slur. Obviously, "Tanned Person" implies that the color goes away when you hide from the sun, which as we know does not happen in all cases.

    On to the op
