    Default Xbox 360....

Anyone have this unit? Can you play DVD's on it as is? Or do you have to buy the attachment for $199 to play DVD's. We're looking at getting it for our son as a Christmas present. He has an Xbox already and I know on it you had to buy the remote in order to play DVD's. We've never done that.

But we're looking at getting him this unit http://shop1.outpost.com/product/506...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

If you really loved your son you'd buy him a Nintendo Wii.

Yeah that unit can play DVDs. The $199 thing is for a HD DVD player. I love mine and if he likes Halo he'll love it too.

I've been told xbox 360 is "backward compatible with the halos" but in reality it really isn't. I've heard of horrible software bugs and no true backward compatibility. You might want to research this before your purchase as my references are hearsay.

I have the $399 360 and both Halos and I've never had a single problem with them. My housemates are always in my room playing them on XBox live.

Also, Rabid, 360 plays normal DVDs fine. The $199 attachment is an HD-DVD player and you only need it if you want to watch HD-DVDs. And looking at the unit you're looking at, those are some pretty average games included with it. If your son is really into games, you might be better off getting the system and pick out a couple excellent games intead.

360 is the way to go IMO.

that Wii console i dont like. on the adverts it looks like ive to stand up when playing some games, call me old fashioned at 23 but im not jumping around the room for any game.

Disclaimer: i will jump around when i pwn a friend tho.

Im not a gamer like he is, what about this one. Only comes with 2 games, but they may be better games.

He's also wanting xbox live so he can play online. He already sits in front of the computer 5 hours straight, 12 or better on weekends playing Warcraft online.

This would be better. These are all the ones we were choosing from. Either that or just getting the xbox360 bundle without the games for $399.99 which I guess would be the same as just buying it around here. Except I wouldnt be charged taxes or shipping if I buy from these guys. Man Im cheap, lol.

Yea all those games pretty much suck. I would look into getting him a couple of these games: Gears of War, Any of the Tom Clancy games, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Call of Duty 3, most of the sports games are pretty good. I'd check out www.gamespot.com for game ratings

In that case I'd buy him a football, kick him outside and then lock the doors.

LOL, thought about that. But he works hard on running track for the high school. So its not like he doesnt get any excersize. He puts in from 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours a day working out for track. Depending on what they work on, so he needs a little sit down time. I do admit he sits too much on the weekends though. But we cant complain, his grades are good and he's not out running the streets getting in trouble with alcohol or drugs or smoking or anything like that. Plus we always know where he is at.

Here's the list of games he already has for his xbox now. I think we will just go with the unit and not the games. If he wants to add to his collection then he can just buy what he wants, like you mentioned earlier. He did say something about Halo3 was supposed to be coming out soon.

    Halo 1 & 2
    Ghost Recon2
    Tournament Paintball
    College Hoops 2k6
    NFL Street
    All Star Baseball 03
    NBA Live 2004
    Star Wars Clone Wars
    NFS Underground 1 & 2
    Crash Randicoot Wrath of Cortex
    Rally Sport Challenge
Tetris (I think wife bought this one for her)

With no tax and just getting the gaming unit bundle without any games, we would save enough to add a 12 month xbox live to the shopping list also.

i ordered an xbox 360 off party poker. Its funny cause i guarantee i won't even play it.

I could be wrong but I think a silver year xboxlive voucher comes with the system, not positive though.

Yeah you do get silver for a year and a one month gold trial but with silver, you can't play any 360 games online, you can only go to the marketplace and download some of the arcade games there. Gold is cheap anyway, only $50 for a whole year.

Most of the games you dont have to stand of for and do lots of movement on the wii. Its definatley a blast though when you add alcohol and lots a friends to the mix though. The wii would be a good choice if you want to save some money since its only $250 and comes with a game, but the xbox 360 is good too. I plan to get one once halo 3 comes out and maybe a price drop.

Actually now I remember it was a kid who worked for best buy that told me the backwards compatible software was horrible. All of your testimonials that it works makes me happy because I <3 halo.

I wondered what the difference in the silver and gold membership was. I figured it was the number of months. Didnt know it had to do with the online games actually played.

    Thanks

If you buy it at buy.com and use Google Checkout you can get it for slightly under $400 including shipping.
    PSU Class of 2011 weeeeeeee!

Ok, placed the order. Went with the premium package with 2 games. When you compared the prices with just the xbox which was $399.99 and xbox live at $59.99 for a total of $472 after shipping charges.

The xbox premium package with the 2 games was $439 and xbox live was $41.88, free shipping. The total was only $10 more than getting the console without the 2 games. So I went this route, I figured the 2 games should be worth $5 each at least.

    Thanks for the help.

P.S. Sorry bigred, the ol charge card only had enough on it for one purchase.

    Me too. Cost me $10....

I love my xbox360, COD 3 is pretty kickass and other games your son will probably like are Lego Star Wars II and Ghost Recon Advanced Weaponary. Haven't played GoW but its only a matter of time until I buy that one.

My first system was an Atari. I played Asteroids and Pong. Galaga was my favorite arcade game. Maybe I should give these new games a try. I do play his NBA game, but he kicks my butt at that.

The best purchase I have ever made was a MODDED xbox. (Not 360, I dont know if theyre moddable yet.) I have loaded literally every 8bit NES, Practically every SNES, Most N64s (Though the ports kinda suck and they dont run real well) and have something like 50 xbox games saved on the hard drive and several DVD movies.

I dont know about modding the xbox 360, but if it can be done in a similar way (and you dont mind losing xbox live which I dont care about) look into it.
<Staxalax> Honestly, #flopturnriver is the one thing that has improved my game the most.

Ha I did this too. I did 5 total for various people, and guess what, after about 2 years, mine is the one that malfunctions first. Im not sure if its the DO solder point went bad or what but I havent cared enough to look into recently. Was awesome though. I love all the classics.
