    Default Your Computer?

At moment im running on a pretty miserable P4 3.0 Ghz 1GB Memory.

I have just had a new computer qoute from a friend who builds them. Wondering what you guys think, do i need anything else?

    CPU AMD Athlon AM2 64 X2 FX-62
    Motherboard Asus M2N32 Deluxe
    Memory OCZ 2Gb DDR2
    Graphics 2x Nvidia GeForce 7600GT 2xDVI PCI-E SLI
    (To allow twin Monitors)
Hard drive 300Gb SATA II 7200Rpm 16Mb cache
    CD/DVD Pioneer DVR-111D CD/DVD burner
    Floppy drive 1.4Mb
    Audio 8 Channel Surround
USB 8x Rear plus 2x Front
    Network Twin 10/100/1000 Gigabit LAN
    Firewire Yes
Power supply Thermaltake 750 watt W0116RB
Case Thermaltake ARMOR VA8003SWA WINDOW ALL ALUMINIUM WITH 5 fans
Software Nero Burning Rom, All driver CDs, Win DVD

Will be buying monitors seperately. Thinking about:

    2 x Dell 20" Flat LCD's - 1600x1200 Res, which fits roughly 6 party screens comfortably (9 at a push)

    Any thoughts?

    Whats everyone else running?

I've built a few. It looks like a nice spec. but the age old question is what do you want to do on it?

    A couple more questions....

    1. How much is this coming in at? I'm just interested really.

    2. Floppy drive 1.4Mb???!!? Really? Why?

What's wrong with 3GHz and 1GB Ram? This relates to the what are you doing question...

    Prize: £1300 ... Thoughts?

Ill be using the computer for poker mainly. But i like to have a good computer incase i feel the need to play any games.

I'm running a computer with two screens, one big and one small one, one keyboard and one mouse, it has also got a webcam and a mic, it is pretty slow so I probably should get a new one. Internet tends to disconnect me every 10 minutes, so I probably need a new internet too.

    Default Re: Your Computer?

The specs you quoted are nearly exactly what I currently have (well, for the major components anyway, discounting things that don't matter much like power supply, case, disc drives, network card, accesories, etc).

I have 4 gigs of OCZ RAM instead of 2 (I do some intensive programming that uses it), and three 300 gig drives instead of one (so I can store lots of TV and movies), and my processor is only a 64 X2 4800+. But I also have an Asus motherboard, and 2x GeForce 7900GT (which is close enough to the 7600).

A setup similar to the specs you listed (and the specs I have) is as far as I can tell the best way to get bang for you buck if you looking into getting a high-ish end system (i.e. a a good deal if you want a power-desktop in the 1.5k to 2k range). Also, I haven't had any driver or hardware problems thus far.

As far as monitors, I bought ones with a wide-screen ratio, but that's primarily because I like the way they look (and because when I was putting together my machine, there was an amazing deal on a particular widescreen montior brand). Also I figured I may as well have monitors to match the gigabytes of wide-screen tv & movies stored on my computer.

If you go Intel instead of AMD you can get rid of most of those fans and the machine will run a hell of a lot more quietly.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I have a 5 year old machine with a newer vid card. I can 6 table with PT and PAHud running, and I can also play games like Half Life 2: Episode 1 with very smooth graphics. That new machine would be overkill for someone that doesn't use it solely for gaming.

I can agree with this statement and still recommend going overkill like I did. I rarely play video games, but when I do I can always turn them up to the maximum settings for everything and still get a ridiculously high framerate.

Also, it's convient to be able to fully start up photoshop in like 1.5 seconds.

I guess I personally fully take advantage of the processor and RAM for development too, but the video cards are definitely overkill.

I was going for Quad-SLi at first

I just like a good system, whether i use it for gaming or not. I do like to play around on WOW/(and used to play UO), but i like playing Hitman and other small games also.

The monitors are wide screen also, 1.6/1.2, good res i would like bigger but means folking out more for larger screen.

Former overclocker enthusiast. My system is a hodgepodge of older and newer parts, I don't have the specs together and dont really feel like checking everything. Some thoughts on the processor & memory:

That's AMD's current "flagship" processor, checks in at about $720. To contrast, take a step down to a Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (2.4 GHz) AM2 Retail and you're talking more like $250. The benchmark tests I've seen certainly show a performance improvement with the FX-62 over the 4600+, but at that cost difference I'd personally think twice about the price vs performance.

Nice. DDR2 prices have been going up lately, but I wouldn't skimp here. Saw a recommendation for Corsair Twin2X2048-6400C4

I need to upgrade.. my system is running like crap, its pretty dated and stuff. I guess I could slap in 512 more ram or something, but I just really dont feel like it. The thing is, there are so many other things that take priority. My system is good enough to make me money, just gets a lil frustrating at times.

For me, this is far too high a spec. for what you want it for my AMD machine (built myself) cost just a few hundred 3/4 years ago. I got a good graphics card seperately and it's still fine for today's games.

Take the advice of others on this thread and take a step down in spec. (less processor specifically as RAM is fine.) as this spec. is capable of running some BIG apps. and you just don't need it to. Hell, I reckon you could play poker on practically any old crap providing your adsl/broadband connection is reliable.

You want to buy a sexy computer, which is fair enough, but you definitely don't NEED one half as good as this if you don't run high-spec programs.

If you can afford it and it'll make you happy, then great, but if you are trying to be +EV then either reduce the spec or give your current PC a brushup - it should be way more than you need for poker, and if you do some housekeeping on unecessary progs, spyware, defragging etc then you might find it gets a new lease of life.
