It's like, take Friends for example, if you were to describe each character in that show in one paragraph, half the paragraph would be about who're they dating and something they did before, which is stupid. They're all pretty much just generic characters. But in a good RPG it's more like "Cloud has crazy hair, always uses a sword bigger than a truck, has never met a challenge he couldn't overcome, and is shy around people but will always protect them then later eat his dinner in silence"

Some shows do this stuff well though. Aliens was great in movie, Modern Family, Community, Wire, some others did this well too
