Are you guys seeing any improvement? We rebooted today (again) and I got rid of some unnecessary indexes in the database and added a new one...

It acts the same way for me. Sometimes posts come up right away but other times...

We're still looking at things and weighing our options. In the end we want the forums to be fast all the time, not just some of the time.

is it a lack of bandwidth?

How much as FTR grown in recent months?
  19. #19
No, our bandwidth is cool, we may need to get a second server and split off the database...

yeah, every time I think it's better, I hit submit and it takes forever to post, then forever to get back. Then usually it's OK again for a bit, then repeat. It's making it harder to post instead of working, so +EV for my company

    Ack...it's really baaad right now...
  24. #24
Yea, its streaky for me too, I was actually about to post a thread about this. Anyways though, maybe its time to upgrade the servers, maybe we could get a donation drive or something set up to cover the costs. An idea I had was to somehow set up a tournament or something with a portion of the prizepool going towards the new server fund. Im sure just putting up a thread asking for donations would get a good amount of money, but I dont think a tourney would hurt.
  25. #25
Jeez it's slow, I'm rebooting right now...
  26. #26
    nice and zippy tonight, ahh

I've asked our hosting center what kinds of options we have regarding upgrades to memory, processors, RAID configs, or getting a second server to just host the database.

His response was I think your site is running fine and then he closed my ticket. Asshole! I re-opened the ticket and am waiting to see what we can do...

better this AM too. Clearly I'm here too much.

    Again...

Ok, fellas, I finally got some good answers from our hosting center, the manager watched our server for a couple of hours, and he clearly stated that everything we've got going on at FTR is way too huge for our little one processor server. In his words, "your trying to run the indy 500 in a yugo".

LOL - yup, I guess that would be a problem.

So, I'm moving forward on getting dedicated service on a second server to run our database (which powers the forums and other stuff). For you techies out there, this will be the database server:

    2 x 160GB SATA 10K RPM Hard Drives in RAID 1 Array.
1 160GB SATA 10K RPM Hard Drive for backup
    4GB DDR RAM
2 x INTEL XEON 3.0GHZ Processors running Hyperthreading
    1gbs internetwork crossover

So, now we'll be running on two servers, the first handling the http requests and the second more powerful box will handle the database.

It'll happen within 1 week, so hopefully we see massive improvements and everyone is happy! (man I hope so, this is going to triple our monthly costs...)

I'll keep everyone updated on our upcoming upgrade right here!
