Default ie8 - main page error

when landing on Online Texas Hold em | Best Poker Sites Reviews | Poker Strategy Forum with ie8 on xp machine , the menu buttons along the top to go (to the forum) don't work and cause ie8 to hang and get a program not responding error. works fine with firefox on the same computer.

If i go direct to the forum , the forum works fine.

Keith, we had our programmer take a look, but he said he wasn't sure what would be causing the lag and error. We're going to have our designer take a look. Does it happen every time?
  8. #8
yeah , its every time in ie8, causes ie8 to stop responding so that has to be shutdown via the task manager. It makes no difference to me as i can swap between browsers, and not a fanboi of any.

non computer literate users , especially form poorer parts of the world are more likely to be using xp with i.e8 and i presume that they would be more likely to to do signups for freerolls and generate revenue for FTR. If they can't even get to the signup pages , how are they going to generate you income?.

Keith, is it all of the tabs that aren't working? Or just the poker forum one? I was under the impression that it was just the poker forum one from what you wrote.

We've tried it in IE8 quite a few times and can't seem to replicate the error you are getting. Does it say what it's waiting on at the bottom at all? That might help point us in the right direction.

It doesn't say anything, it flat out hangs the browser with the not responding message. It only happens with IE8 and 7 in XP.

Well, we were able to find someone to replicate the error for us and test out stuff, but we can't figure out what is going wrong to cause the hang up. Still working on it.

#9981 (IE8 on XP Crashes with jQuery 1.6.2) – jQuery Core - Bug Tracker

Even though they're referring to a different version of jQuery, that ticket was never solved, it was just closed because the user reporting it went away so it's possible whatever is causing this kept getting passed into new versions.

Also, your home page is the only page that uses the most recent version of jQuery where all your forum pages use version 1.4.2 (way older).

*Side note: While checking out your jQuery version I noticed you guys aren't condensing your CSS and JS files. You should check to see if vBulletin has a plugin that will do that for you, most CMS software has something like this. It will improve your site's performance. Plus, you're probably pretty close to running into an issue with IE where it only allows you to have a certain amount of stylesheets per page (I forget what the exact number is). Condensing the stylesheets will also avoid that issue when you come to it.

I was actually just looking into jQuery last night and have brought it up. Thanks for pointing out the condensing CSS and JS files. I'll definitely bring these points up, too.

A change to the jQuery was made. I think they misunderstood the point though and made the change to the homepage, not the forum. I've asked them to do that too, but is the error still there? The lolz left his xp behind so he can't test it out for me.

tested it a bit more after i replied to lolz PM.
if I clear the cache and head back to the home page and head immediately to the forums tab i get the drop down menu and can click on a forum and go to it, a second or two of hesitation and the browser doesnt give the drop down menu list and then get the hour glass pointer and forum not responding message in the browser title
  19. #19
hmm...did you get the waiting on stars mobile message at the bottom again?
  20. #20
not getting anything today, all the images sem to be loading but no drop down menu and a bit of a wait 2-3 seconds and then the hour glass pointer

Someone else was able to try it with IE8 on XP, but they had no problems at all. :\
  22. #22
just been back and tested it again and still the same. Did they go to www.flopturnriver.com or did they go direct to the forum. heading straight to the forum works fine, its going via the .com page that th eproblem occurs and seems strange that me gala and lollz can all replicate the problem.

He went from the homepage, Online Texas Hold em | Best Poker Sites Reviews | Poker Strategy Forum. Not sure what's going on. We're kind of at a loss trying to figure it out, especially since someone was able to do it successfully.
  24. #24
I'm really sorry, but I have no idea what could be going on and no one seems to be able to figure it out. :\
