I give up some equity by letting him draw to 9+ a portion of the time, but in exchange I keep the pot small and avoid making huge mistakes on the river.
If I bet the turn then I'm representing like an Ax hand that bluff raised the flop or a set or the occasional AT and it's going to be really easy for worse hands to fold at that point besides draws. I give up getting value out of the draws for one street for getting value out of them on the river sometimes and getting value out of other hands I beat on the river sometimes, and I think this part balances itself out. Where I feel I really gain by checking the turn is the times that he already has me beat and I get a lot of money in behind. Checking the turn avoids that while keeping my other considerations for value roughly the same.
Okay I hope that makes sense.
