After your smooth call and check on the turn he could have anything at all, from a crap ace to a middle pocket pair to a busted straight. Here's what could be going through his mind on the river. Hmm... decent pot, I bet he doesn't have the 9 or anything, really, so I'll make a big bet and rep the 9. You then come over the top for 10 more. He thinks/reacts in a flash of emotion and little thought: "Bitch, you don't have the nine, neither do I but this is my pot goddamnit, this'll show you to raise me with your weakass hand...." Allin. He might have had A9, but I think he would at least bet something on the turn when he mad a nicely camoflaged 2 pair and could get a call from a higher ace. I think the mistake you made is not at least betting something on the turn. Calling and checking looks very weak, and suddenly coming alive at the river might induce a big bluff. Any read on this guy? What was your table image? Interesting hand. I don't think I'd ever lay this down.
Also, w/r/t his telling you "A9" after the hand, that doesn't mean a lot without showing his cards.
