i like the turn check, not to induce a bluff but to save money against a slowplaying set.

That's an easy call.

I think he could've picked up a cheeky two pair on the turn and tried for an awful slowplay of some sort. Still have to call the river, you could well have him beat and the pots nice and big to call it.
