Its not an auto-fold. I don't really believe there are such things as auto-folds that don't require any thought, unless you have absolute shit. But you need a good read or "strong gut feeling" clearly. And it depends on how accurate you are at making them.
If you're a beginner, it may have just been a bad call that got lucky and won. But if you normally fold hands like this easily, but this time had a strong feeling that he was trying a desperation bluff because you showed weakness on the turn, then you made a very good read. Often a check on the turn and then a BIG bet on the river is a bluff, like it was in this case, so there were signs that your hand could be good, the rest depends more on a feel for the game you were in and for the player's style of play.
Anyone that thinks that calls like this always fall into the first category are fooling themselves. Recently I'm noticing that I'm calling more on the river with A high and low pocket pair (with 3 or 4 overs on the board) than I ever have before, because I'm getting more of these strong feelings. Almost every time for a few weeks I've been correct about them being very weak, but a few of the times my kicker is outkicked (AJ against AQ with neither of us having pairs) or something like that, but the majority of times I've been correct (a couple times resulting in the bluffers then ranting about what a fish I am, calling with such a weak hand).
The better you get at reading players, the better you become playing with marginal hands, and therefore the more tough calls like this one you can make. Certainly don't try and take calls like this out of your game, just make sure you have good reasons for making the calls, and keep an eye on how often you're making the right decision.
If this was one of your first big tough calls, pooh pooh what everyone else said and pat yourself on the back. You're starting to think outside the box a bit, relying more on playing against what you think they have instead of just playing your cards. Just don't go trying to do it every hand, or even once a game / day. You just have to take the opportunities to get these "strong gut feelings" as they come.
