It seems like everyone has this reflexive, somewhat groupthinkish attitude toward minraising--that it's something you should never do. It is often a donk move, but I definitely think there are places where it's good.

Renton--can you explain your above statement? IMO, they define your opponent's hand very often, at least at the lower levels, where people instamuck after weakly cbetting an unlikely flop. They certainly don't give away your hand in these cases.
It doesn't define hands well because villain will typically call a minraise with an extremely wide range. They completely give away your own hand because they basically say "i have a hand that I know is the best, so I am going to make you pay the minimum amount in an effort not to chase you away"

The only time I regularly minraise is on the river. It doesn't cause as much damage there, because there aren't any cards left to come (and hence no reason to protect your hand).
