Did I play this wrong?

Hi players, I just signed up to this forum even though Ive been lookin over it for a long time. But I decided to sign up cuz now I have a couple questions of my own that I would like to ask. My first question is kinda raw because im not giving much information on it, and I know there are alot of different answers for alot of different situations. So im goin to ask what would be the wisest thing to do with no read against my opponent. That will make i a little easier to give a decent answer on what or what not to do. Anway my question is if you just sit down and get involved with a player post flop whom (rememeber) you have no read on and have top pair post flop, and you bet, and he cold calls and on the turn or river is a scare card (overcard, or possible straight, or possible flush)in early pos, would it be best to check or bet one more time for more information, the thing about checking is he might value bet or bluff making me fold potentially the best hand. And same exact situation other then your in late posistion, and the turn is a scare card. Would it be best to bet or check. Im not worried about the river in late position because if a scare card hits, I can easily check when he checks to me. Please help me out on that question AND also what if anything I did wrong in this...

It looks like an OES(F)D, maybe with a pair (or possibly two pair) and I think you played it okay, except for the river bet, which I assume was blocking bet. It's a tricky one - but he's shown strength so far and the 4 is a real scare card, so I would probably reluctantly check fold.

check raise line on the flop is an alternative but if opp has a monster draw hes pushing anyway.
