Otherwise you played it fine. The turn was very good for him, giving him 13 outs on the river. He bet on the implied odds figuring you were attached to your hand with that bet. A check on the river would have spoiled his fun.
The river bet is a blocking bet. If he checks, he'll probably be forced to check-call some bet from an op who has him beat. When he got raised on the river, now he should be considering folding it but it comes down to a read. Pot's so big, he's obligated to call against any op who's not known to showdown superstrong.
