Default my first instinct was to call but I felt a check raise..

my first instinct was to call but I felt a check raise would show more strength. My read was that he busted his draw but when he came over the top of the check raise I lost my nerve

    himself fucker.
the two moves dont make sense. You check-raise a hand you think has zero value. The only reason to do that is to try and induce a bluff that you then call.

Just a lot of confusion on the river.

I almost understand this so bear with me..

how does a check raise induce a bluff?

A check-raise only induces a bluff from total maniacs.

Your check-raise on the river really doesn't make sense. If you're right and he missed a draw, then he just folds his hand. If you're wrong then he calls or raises and you lose more.

If you think he had a busted draw why not check/call and induce a bluff? Check raising in this situation is nothing but bad news.
Light years ahead of the competition.

Then why are you check-raising? A busted draw can't just call a check-raise. Neither can a worse hand. This is a completely missguided move unless it was in hopes of inducing a maniac to come over the top.
