You aren't just hoping to steal the blinds, you're representing a range of hands which will allow you to take down the pot on the flop much easier. I do this consistently in late position with just about any two cards hoping to either take the pot preflop, or on the flop, and it usually works. Besides, what is wrong with stealing a small pot? I'd rather win $1.50 than nothing.
