Thanks for all of your help so far, it helps me understand why I had the instincts I had, although I wasn't really giving it much thought at the time.
So the river call to me was easy, I agree that the call is pretty inevitable there with 3:1, and the button checking behind on the turn is a pretty good indication I am in safe territory.
However:
PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $1.00 BB (5 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)
BB ($117.90)
UTG ($99.50)
Hero ($117.95)
Button ($87.50)
SB ($137.50)
Preflop: Hero is MP with K , A .
UTG calls $1, Hero raises to $4, Button calls $4, 2 folds, UTG calls $3.
Flop: ($13.50) 5 , 4 , A (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $8, Button calls $8, UTG calls $8.
Turn: ($37.50) 3 (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero checks, Button checks.
River: ($37.50) K (3 players)
UTG bets $20, Hero calls $20, Button raises to $75.5, UTG folds
At this point I'm thinking of the hands that beat me, of which there are many. A set, flush, even the lone deuce. The fact that the river is a king rarely helps me on the range of hands that raise like that.
