The standard rule is to over-bet the pot. What you did sounded right. The other person made a very chance call and you profited. Good Job.

There are a lot of situation that pop up in similar circumstances. If you are looking at a good hand with a draw heavy board, take away other people's pot odds.

If you can beat those draw hands, give them their odds.

Example:
You have

Flop & Turn

Let give them their odds to chase the flush, or hopefully they have a made flush. You're full house will beat them.
