UTG ranges

    Default UTG ranges

Playing 100NL on stars, so a 9 handed table. My UTG raising range is very very specific, and quite tight. My overall game is looser than most of the regs at my stakes, though not by much.

My question: Is it worth it to throw in the odd hand from outside of my range just to shake things up and balance things out? Or, is it not worth it to make this play say 1 out of 30 orbits?

Ex. raise 9Ts from UTG instead of instafold once in a blue moon. If I happen to show down the hand it works out well image wise for me, and shouldn't cost too much if it goes south. It won't really have an effect on my stats though.

Specific is bad. If you run like 12/4 preflop and raise in EP I'll call wide in position with the hopes of blowing you out of the pot on an appropriate board

Example. Pretty sure you've seen this opponent before

I often raise from w/ EP small pocket pairs or SC/SG. At aggro reraisey tables I might not raise SCs coz I won't call a reraise while I might do so with PPs.

I run above 20/12 most of the time, but am tight from EP. My range is specific in that it does not include SC's, offsuit broadways or weak aces, so a lot of hands just aren't in my EP raising range.

I may just be overthinking this though as my EP range does include most (if not all) PP's, which should make it look wide enough to not have to include all of the other hands.

I am just throwing it out there because I saw a tight reg showdown a 9Ts that he had raised UTG and I didn't think he was capable of that, and it made me rethink my play against him, probably to my detriment. I have since readjusted, chalking it up to a one time/very rare occurrence.

    20/12 isn't bad
And if you want to open up, I suggest you raise a SC rather than offsuit broadways in EP

i often add hands like 45 s to my range (by often i mean on the few occasions when i have developed a solid image and am bossing.) You can bet out wth one highcard on the flop and are clearly hidden if you hit the flop hard.
I find it easy to get a way from these type of hands if they hit part of the flop. JT and AT can be trouble, top pair and dead as a fish.

Your ranges should decrease as your seat gets closer to the BB.

True, but I don't think this is what he was asking. He wants to know if changing up UTG raising ranges to SC and weaker holdings is a profitable move. It depends on the table; if the table is loose then don't do it. I also think that most players at 100NL don't understand UTG vs CO raising ranges so in the end I don't think it's worth it.

This is a pretty good point. There is a limit where most players take into considerations the ranges from the UTG vs. range from the EP/MP.... 100nl is not one of them.

I remember a thread created based similarily on this OP and I tried it once and succeeded: UTG w/78s call. folds to CO who raises. folds to me who 3 bets, CO calls. I cbet and win. lol... i haven't exactly a large sample.

I think 200NL+ will take into consideration ranges + position a great deal more frequently than those @ 100nl.
