What would you do here?

I wasn't involved in this hand, but after witnessing it at my home game, I have to ask what you would have done if you were the one holding pocket As.

PF:
Preflop: UTG has Ac Ad
UTG raises 4, MP calls, CO folds, Button (me) folds, SB folds, BB folds.

Some info: MP is the large stack at our table, with roughly 85 dollars in front of him. UTG is next, holding 80. UTG is a tight-aggressive player, although he does have some loose calls in him at times. MP is loose-passive PF, and then loose-aggressive postflop.

Flop: 5c 4h 2h

UTG raises 4, MP calls.

Turn: 2d

UTG raises 7, MP re-raises to 20. UTG calls.

River: Qh

UTG checks, MP goes all-in for roughly 57 dollars.

...?

I should probably add that both are capable of bluffing, though UTG usually does only standard bluffs (ie., raising AK on a ragged flop that didn't hit), etc., while MP is a lil' bit more creative.

Also, when UTG said "This is a hard decision", MP replied with "What, do you have the straight?"

That's about it.

Lemme guess. UTG called, got beat by one of many hands that could beat him.(any set, any 2, a straight, a flush) and is presently on the rail talking about how aces are "the worst hand in poker"

This is not an easy fold -- farbeit from me to suggest that.

But take note: it's NOT an easy call either. You have to be sure opp is bluffing. It's one thing if opp sits there calling the whole time and draws out. But these are big bets. Are you sure?

The blinds for this game are .25-.50, btw, so the PF raise was 8xBB.

As it turns out, UTG thought about it for what seemed like forever, nearly folding his hand a couple times, and staring down MP the entire time. Finally, he called.

Before they both showed their cards, MP said, "You have a high pair, you have me beat", and showed down J-9 of spades. UTG dragged the pot.

Good call, but what the heck was MP thinking !??

6 handed a lot of calls fly.

If he makes silly calls like these preflop, it's easier for him to rep the scare card deuce.

He played it well. Unfortunatly, his opponent had one of those hands that "people just don't fold."

Oh i see, so knowing he really didn't have anything he tried representing the 2's - doesn't seem like an overall good strategy, going in on something that he shouldn't (due to PF raise EP), and then basically bluff all the way ?

He's got 160 BB to win in this hand (80 bucks).

If he flops 2 pair or better, he's looking at a huge win (there are no scare cards, not even a straight with J9 would be that scary unless the board was KQT)

If he can, he may try to bluff a scare card.

So his preflop call is tolerable.

His misplay was that the board wasn't sufficently scarey and no hands that would call a preflop raise should hit that board very hard except QQ or AK.

Where he went wrong was trying to bluff *that* particular scare card (that is, unless 8BB is a "normal" raise and people call such a big preflop raise with crappy hands). It looks like a lower pocket pair greater than 5 trying to protect on the turn. If I were the Aces, I'd push here. There's just nothing scary on that board and if anything, I'm trying to protect against the flush.

LAGs are always the hardest to pick and I'd guess that most often there a TAG would fold, especially since a raise on the turn is often used by 4 flushers as a semi bluff. I am sure that the LAG would have had a very similar betting pattern with the whole host of hands that could have beaten that top two pair.

However, this was live and there are all those extra chances to get a read on an opponent. Without any extra reads it's a coin toss as to a call or a fold.
