Default Feelings on various online poker rooms

OK. I have tried the following sites: Paradise Poker, Ultimate Bet, Party Poker and Empire Poker. Here are my thoughts on all of them. Keep in mind that I consider myself to still be a novice (only been playing online for about 1 1/2 months to this point). Also, I would categorize myself as a fairly tight/aggressive player:

PARADISE POKER - This is where I started off. Extremely nice interface. Not a bad thing to say about the interface at all. The "Lobby" was very easy to follow with regard to the ring games as well as finding tournaments. I found the majority of players there to be similar in style to myself (tight/aggressive). I deposited $50 (additionally, I received their 25% initial deposit bonus of $12.50). After about 1 week playing mainly .50/1.00 limit tables I worked my bankroll up to $182. Over the next week, I proceeded to lose every cent of it. Bad cards, bad beats, constantly losing to hands on the river. Still, I haven't got much bad to say about Paradise Poker. I have not since re-deposited there, but, I think that I would in the future.

ULTIMATE BET - After my inital online poker experience at Paradise Poker I decided to give Ultimate Bet a try after reading some of the reviews of the site. I made an initial deposit of $50 and promptly lost it all within about 2 days playing the same tables I was playing at Paradise. I made another deposit of $75 thinking that I would mix up my strategy (I believe that I was playing TOO tight) and change over to the NL tables. I began playing the .10/.25 blind tables. I have since moved to the .25/.50 blind NL tables. To date I have won back the initial $50 that I lost on Ultimate Bet and am currently up on Ultimate Bet about $80. This also helped me recover the intial $50 that I lost at Paradise. I have been playing at UB for about a month now. I have no problem with the interface other than that 1) I don't like that they don't flip over the cards when 2 people are in a showdown all-in, 2) they slide the chips over to the winning player to quickly once the cards get flipped over after any hand. This doesn't allow the players to really see the other hands before seeing who has won that hand, and 3) Lastly, the "Lobby" interface is a bit confusing at first until you become acclimated to it (at which time it is not bad at all). The "Lobby" is not as user-friendly as Paradise Poker but overall, not bad at all. I am playing pretty much exclusively at UB as of right now.

PARTY POKER - Got my hands on a bonus code and decided to give this site a shot after hearing all of the people on this site rave about it. I deposited $50 in order to collect a deposit bonus of $25 (after 125 raked hands). I do not like the interface at Party Poker at all. Every few seconds while in the "Lobby" my screen would bog down. The information scroll at the top of the lobby stops and all information on the screen freezes for 2-5 seconds at a time. The same held true at the tables although not nearly as frequently. I opened up Paradise and UB software to see if it was my connection but both of them ran flawlessly. Not sure why this was happening but I would classify the Party Poker software as "kludgy" at best. As for the play, I found that the players on Party Poker were waaaaaaaay more loose and aggressive than I felt comfortable playing with. I attribute this to me being a beginner as I am still learning to be comfortable at the NL tables. I proceeded to lose my $50 deposit and when I realized that Party Poker would not let me withdraw anything less than $50 and that I had to play out the rest of my deposit/bonus I was a little less than enthused. I proceeded to lose the bonus of $25 as well. I busted $75 total (deposit + bonus) in a little over 2 days there. Now, to be fair, I think that as my playing style matures and I become more confident I may not mind playing there as much. I should have known that the play was significantly more aggressive as soon as I saw the average pot sizes as compared to Paradise and UB. One thing I do believe is that there are alot of bad players on Party Poker who are just asking for their money to be taken by playing so loose (almost maniacal). So, once I hone my skills I may venture back and see if I can take some of their money that they are abviously dying to give away For now, I'll stay out of everyone's way who plays there from this forum. But, make some room for me once I get a little better, OK?

EMPIRE POKER - I knew that Empire is affiliated with Party Poker so I kind of expected the same thing as Party Poker. Can anyone tell me the true affiliation between Party and Empire as I don't truly understand it. Also, is there any advantage to playing on one site as opposed to the other? As for the interface, see my comments on Party Poker above. However, as opposed to Party Poker I had no freezes in my software while in the "Lobby" or at the tables. I thought that was strange with the 2 sites being affiliated. Any comments on this would be appreciated. Anyway, I deposited another $50 to get the $25 bonus (same setup as Party Poker, 125 raked hands). I loosened up a bit but still could not make any ground. After I had played the minimum number of 125 raked hands to release my $25 bonus I had lost about $7 of my intial $50 deposit. so I was left with a bankroll of $68 ($50 deposit - $7 in loses +$25 bonus). I decided to cash out and get the hell outta Dodge! Again, I may go back there once I hone my playing style a bit more but for now I will stay away from that site as well.

Overall, I feel most comfortable at Ultimate Bet. Not just because I am up overall there but just because there are more players that play my style at this point in time.

I think that overall, after my first 1 1/2 months playing I am almost even (in actuality I am down about $3 overall). I consider this not to be too bad considering that I am just starting out. Hopefully, as I get better I will build my bankroll. Anyway, Let me know what you guys think of the my synopses on these sites and add your comments. Also, I would like to hear peoples thoughts on other online rooms that you have played in.

    Thanks!

    P.S. - Love this site!

    Thanks!

    P.S. - Love this site!

jmrogers, thank you very much for your review.

The freezes and interface glitches that you are experiencing are not the norm at PartyPoker. There was a network problem (D.O.S. attack) there last week and they appear to still be making updates and modifications. Hopefully, all will be back to normal very soon.

I've only been playing at PartyPoker since I started playing online poker 3 months ago, so I couldn't offer any feedback about the other sites.

    As for PartyPoker...
You're right. It has a reputation of having a lot of maniacs and all-in freaks. But they are indeed very loose as well. You just need to continue playing tight, be patient and keep folding until you have great cards. But what's great about PartyPoker is the sheer amount of NL $25 (.25/.50 blinds) tables. I don't believe any other site has that much to choose from.

I have set up an account at UltimateBet, but I have not played there yet. I took one look at the number of comparable tables and found only 3 to choose from, so I left.

Sorry for putting this post in the wrong Section. As soon as I posted it I knew I should have not put it there. Thanks for moving it.

As for Party poker's issues that I experienced, perhaps you are right. That is the time frame that i played on there so maybe that was it.

As for the tables that you were looking for at Ultimate Bet, they will automatically remove empty tables from the "Lobby" screen after a short period of time of them being empty. As more players arrive and the existing tables fill up they add more and more tables for that particular level. My guess is that you came there when the play at the NL .10/.25 blind tables (I believe that these are the $25 buy-in limit tables) was low. During peek times it is not uncommon to see 15-20 of those tables active.

I would guess that Party Poker is able to offer more of those tables because of the sheer magnitude of players that they have on their site as opposed to the other online poker rooms.

Thanks for your response! Any input on the Party/Empire affiliation?

    Hi jmrogers,

I'm not too sure what the deal is between Empire and PartyPoker. I think it may be the same card room with two different skins or front ends...
hopefully someone will post the clarification here soon.

If it's the same, I'd love to open an Empire account, cash in on the bonus, and play against the same players.

I too started at Paradise and then moved to UB. However, I settled at PartyPoker. I agree that the interface/software of PartyPoker has much to be desired, and I like it much less than UB. But in the end, it's all about making money, and there is no bigger lake with more fish than PartyPoker. Your tight style will pay off at PartyPoker, but you'll have to wait for the cards to come.

Xianti, who posted on this thread, just started playing poker. And I mean just started like learning that 3 of a kind beats 2 pair. He didn't play during high school or college or anything like that, he started playing a few months ago (he learned everything from FTR!). I think he mentioned he cashed out $500 over the last week at PartyPoker...right Xianti?

Anyway, good luck to you and thanks for the reviews!

    Indeed.

I am wholly a product of FlopTurnRiver.com! I learned everything here. I only started playing poker just 3 months ago... ANY poker, let alone online.

I lost a few hundred in the first two weeks of playing (as I had MUCH to learn, and I hadn't yet fully studied and absorbed all the information here), but I cashed out a total of $500 in the past week-and-a-half and am happy to say that I am now in the black $160 (profit) for online play since I started.

Don't make my mistake of diving into real money games before fully absorbing and comprehending everything on this site and these forums. But then again, there's nothing like playing the real money tables to educate you.

With FTR, you too, can be a success story!

As for Empire, I believe Fnord mentioned that it is a "skin" of PartyPoker.

What this means is that they actually share the IDENTICAL interface, but are different sites. I think Fnord said that they do share some tables, though. I'm not sure.

    Wow. Interesting feedback.

I've played at PokerStars, PartyPoker and Ultimatebet.

I've found I like Pokerstars the best so far, with PartyPoker coming a close 2nd and UB a distant 3rd. I don't care for the layout of UB, and everything happens so quickly. An All In between 2 players flops by in like 2 seconds. No time to really even see what happens. I don't like the chat feature and hate the fact that when you type it doesn't even stand out in a different color. The bonuses at UB also seemed pretty hard to obtain. I don't care for the layout of the poker rooms at UB either, a little cluttered and confusing if you ask me.

I love the layout at Pokerstars. Not as much action there as at PartyPoker, but everything runs smoot, the chat menu works well and they take quick action against chat abusers. Bonuses there seem pretty obtainable and the action is good for the most part. Not nearly as many bad players there as at PartyPoker, but good action nonetheless. I enjoy the custom pics you can add at PokerStars as well, adds a little something to the game. Easy to take notes as well.

PartyPoker has tons of action. If anything, there is almost too many people playing. The layout at the table is kind of lame, but I enjoy the games there. I originally started out at PP, then went on to PokerStars, with a quick visit to UB. I'm taking a break from PokerStars (up about $500) and seeing how I do at PP. I deposited $50 yesterday, went up $50 in about 30 minutes (hit sets 3 times and pocket AA). Then lost with KK and a 6-10 straight versus a 7-J straight. Still finished up about $28 though.

    Hey all -

Thanks for the great feedback! Interesting to see how some enjoy certain rooms while others do not like those same rooms at all. Oh well, I guess that's what makes the world go around, right? It would be a pretty boring place if we all liked the same thing wouldn't it!?

As for Party Poker and Empire Poker, for those of you who haven't yet tried Empire, it is EXACTLY the same interface as Party Poker. The only difference is the background color and the characters at the tables themselves. Otherwise, they are identical. They do both offer there own separate deposit bonuses. Although one thing I didn notice was that when I opened my account at Empire (after having already opened my account on Party Poker) it would not let me sign up with the same screen name that I signed up with on Party Poker so I had to choose a different account name. I thought that was interesting, so it could very well be that they share the same accounts between both rooms. Although all of my contact information and so forth was identical to my account that I set up on Party Poker except for my screen name and they still gave me the bonus. Interesting to say the least.

I do see enormous potential for profit at Party Poker if I can get confident enough to play there with the large amount of what i consider to be bad players and maniacs. I just have to work myself up to feeling confident enough in my style that I can "go fishing"!!

I have definitely found a comfort zone at Ultimate Bet. Not exactly sure why but that's how I'm feeling right now. AceKing - I totally agree about the "quickness" with which hands are played out on UB. In fact, I mention that above in my review that that is one of the few things that i dislike about UB. it is aggravating that they do it so quickly. That coupled with not turning over both players cards immediately in a showdown where you are all-in until all board cards are dealt are my two biggest pet peeves about UB.

If I remember correctly, wasn't PokerStars the site that Chris Moneymaker won his online tournament on to win that seat at the 2003 WSOP which he ended up winning?

Nice work in that short period of time! Congratulations!

I played for about 30 minutes yesterday between things I had to do. Didn't feel like getting involved in a NL game right there and then because I knew I wouldn't want to leave the table when I had to. I ended up winning $2. Yippee. Oh well, better than nothing.

So, over all, since I started playing a month and a half ago I am now -$1.

Al.... most.... over..... the..... hump....... Must....... make...... profit...........

Agree. I had a hard time taking notes on players there due tothe quickness of the game. Also, the players namesall cameup in small white letters, making it harder to distinguish players IMO. At pokerstars, with the custom pictures available, it was much easier to take notes and get better reads on players. Even Partpoker seems easier to read people than UB. I don't know, I only gave UB a chance for 2 days, but I hated it for the most part.

If I remember correctly, wasn't PokerStars the site that Chris Moneymaker won his online tournament on to win that seat at the 2003 WSOP which he ended up winning?
Yep. He is from Pokerstars. Awesome site really, I like it a lot.

PartyPoker on the other hand has an insane amount of players, lots of action. You just need to play tighter at PP, and get away from tables when you double your stack. Start over at $25 and find a new table.

    Hey guys,

Good info. I've been curious about PokerStars and Empire. Maybe I'll try out Empire first, gotta love the initial deposits bonuses!! Nothing like starting the month in positive territory.

It's interesting that Empire wouldn't allow you to have the same screen name... I wonder why that would be. If Empire uses the same software, does anyone know if the hand history function is identical to PartyPoker? It would be great to continue using the PartyPoker Hand Replayer for Empire hands, I know there are a lot of members here that rely on that!

ttanaka - I would venture and educated guess and say that the hand replayer would work with Empire Poker hand histories. I am serious when I say that it is practically identical to Party Poker in just about every aspect except for a few cosmetic things like color scheme and table characters.

You are correct about starting the month off in the black with a nice deposit bonus! That was definitely nice to get.

One thing that pissed me off though. I cashed out $67.90 from Empire after getting the bonus (as I described in a post above). When my withdraw was actually approved and finalized and sent back into my Neteller account I got an e-mail from Empire stating that the withdrawal was complete. However, they stated that they can only do withdrawals in "whole dollars". Therefore, my withdrawal was only made in the amount of $67. AND, they did NOT put the $0.90 back into my Empire Poker real money account. So, I basically got shafted out of almost an entire dollar.

I know I'm knit-picking over a very small amount of money, but it is the principal of the thing that pissed me off. Sorry just needed to vent on that. I'm big on "principal" and that just did not sit right with me.
