Why the flop smooth call? I'm trying to understand the thinking here...

Well I wasnt scared of much, didnt think anyone was on a straight draw so I figured I'd let the PF raiser build himself a nice little pot that would be hard to let go.

Another line to play around with here is to bet into him on the flop, provoke a raise then play back at him hard. That will also make it difficult for him to get away from his hand. That little gem is from Super System.

Yup, re-read that a couple of weeks back and I think its one of the better pieces of advice in there. If the flop missed him you're not getting much out of him anyway if the flop hit him and he was the PFR, he's going to slam the pot back at you. I've actually had people push outright with bullets or cowboys on flops like this with a raise into them... I like, damn good advice.

That's true, and I love that line from SS but I don't always play the hands the same.

I didn't really feel a whole lot of strength coming from the guy for whatever reason so I thought that if he missed his hand then maybe he would continue and try to bluff the turn like I stupidly do sometimes. I was wrong, but hell it worked out. When I get that many people calling my PF raise, then I'm a lot quicker to jump ship on the flop if I get much action even with TPTK so I waited until the turn to make a raise.

Anyways, what you guys said would probably have worked just as well against this moron.

Against some players you can smooth call the flop if you think they're on overcards and will continue to bluff at you. Some guys hate to let go of AK and will bet it unimproved until you raise them. I used to play sets this way habitually, but I think the Super/System recommendation is a good one if you don't know for sure they are that kind of player, or suspect they may have hit on the flop.

By the way, Smackin' - good to hear that things might be turning around for you. You'll come out of the downswing in no time, and you'll undoubtedly be a stronger player for it.

Thanks dale, you're a smart sumbitch sometimes. I really do appreciate the replies lately - I think I'm done as well. I have tightened up postflop. I also quit raising 89 diamonds in EP :cry:

Forgot to mention - another reason to sometimes smooth call this flop is to take advantage of a TAgg player in a short-handed game. Especially heads up play. Let's say they raise with what you figure is definitely an ace hand - AK, AQ, or AJ. Flop is A2x giving them top pair and you bottom set. Now if you come out betting, they're definitely raising once, and then you can fire in a re-raise. But a good TAgg player will smell that re-raise for the trouble it is and let the hand go. However, a smooth call gets you in almost no trouble. You're giving them a free card, but if they make two pair it doesn't bug you, and if they trip up the aces you just made a boat. They're undoubtedly going to put you on a weaker ace or a draw and keep betting on the turn, at which point you can put in a raise (not a huge one - you want them to keep playing). Then bet whatever they'll call on the river, or maybe slam down a huge bet and hope they think it's a last minute bluff on a failed draw.

This approach works brilliantly under the right conditions. Imagine a heads-up hand where they have aces, decent kicker, and you're smooth-calling on a possible flush draw board, but actually have a set and not the draw. You can smooth call to the river, then fire in a huge bet on the river if the flush card doesn't land (which it won't 2/3 of the time), and they're very likely to read it for a bluff and call, maybe even raise you. Against smart, aggro players, this can be good for a lot of chips.

Nice post Dale. I fastplay sets about 100% of the time, but I might try this play if this situation comes up.

It's easier to learn to play less hands than it is to learn to play more hands...

I think a call there is the perfect move. You can almost gaurentee another raise from one of the players on the tur, which you can then slam down a pot sized raise or push. No matter what the turn is it will not scare you, and if it isnt raised you can raise. That is the beauty of last postion.

btw - If someone has 3-3 your probably losing it all anyways so it dosnt mater what you do.

ya thats a leak.

both ideas work good .. if he has unimproved AK on the flop, an aggressive bet would have scared him off. in this situation smooth calling turned out to be a better move.
