This looks a lot more of a blind steal/defense rather than a laydown situation... unless you have him read to AK or better

I think his play is really fishy, it's not something you'd do with trip 8's. I'd put him on ace/x could be a king but it's hard to tell. he could've been reraising the flop because he thought you made a continuation bet then when you showed weakness he bet because he'd think you would fold.

Opp having an 8 never crossed my mind. Though he's good for Ax.
AK beats you and so does AJ... either of which are raisable (not so much AJ but from the button...). If he has some other AX it's just an example of why being out of position sucks :(
