hi, could someone explain what a continuation bet is and what its good for?...sorry if this is a dumb question!
When you bet at a flop following your pre-flop raise, whether or not you have hit the flop. It's pretty standard, but best to only continuation bet against one or two opponents. The size of your bet should be the same as if you had hit the flop, none of this 1/4 pot nonsense.
For example:
PokerRoom No-Limit Hold'em, $0.50 BB (7 handed) FTR converter on zerodivide.cx
Mr Fish ($42.50)
BB ($73.65)
UTG ($49.90)
MP1 ($24.35)
MP2 ($24.25)
Jimmy Mac ($97.95)
Button ($19.55)
Preflop: Jimmy Mac is CO with 7:spade: , 4:diamond:
3 folds, xxJimmyMacxx raises to $2, 1 fold, Mr Fish calls $1.75, 1 fold.
Flop: ($4.50) 5:diamond:, K:heart:, 2:club: (2 players)
Mr Fish checks, xxJimmyMacxx bets $3.5, Mr Fish folds.
Final Pot: $8

thanks! thats kind of what I thought it was. I've tried this but quite often people seem to call the post flop bet. Does this usually mean they've hit something on the flop, or do they just assume you've put in a continuation bet and hit nothing?...so should you check the turn assuming they've hit something or keep betting?...
Always be carefull who you do this against. Don't c-bet calling stations.
I always check the turn if my c-bet doesn't work unless I have a good read that the other guy is pretty good and capable of putting me on AK and calling my bluff.
As said above you have to be carefull who you contuination bet against. Doing it against the wrong player is expensive.
already been said before, but:
continuation bet - a bet against 1 or 2 opponents after the flop, whether you caught the flop or not. typically a 1/2 pot sized bet (give or take) to run off drawing hands, rep a good hand, or hopefully win it right there.
you can also fire a continuation bet on the turn.
nothing no one here hasn't said. just remember, this move can get expensive, and it's important to attack the right opponents with it. definitely don't overdo it. and have absolute faith in your reads, or you'll get yourself in a lot of trouble.
