general approaches for reading players in 6max

i am curious to hear about the varied techniques you all use in trying to get reads on people in 6MAX, in a general sense. do you start by trying to categorize players into one of the archetypes (LAG, TAG, TP, Rock, etc.) after a few orbits of play? or, do you go off of individual hands that are played out (i.e. this is how he plays this, next time i am going to do that against him because of this knowledge)? maybe you first assume that all unknown players at the table are TAGs, and work to prove otherwise through playing with them... whatever it is, i want to hear it.

i have my own approach, but i don't want to share that until after a few people have weighed in. i am just interested to hear about commonality throughout varied individual approaches. i think reads are so important in 6MAX that this warrants a little discussion.
