First highstakes MMT

i reciently went to my first small tourney, a 3 table MMT, it was a sattilite tourney, top 4 got seats to the Canadian Poker Tour on March 25th when it comes to town. 5th got 144 bucks in cash... i got 5th.. and also got addicted to tournement poker in the process.

the next week i went back, got 4th and a buyin to the CPT, its a 300 buck buyin with $100 add-on's (dont know if there are rebuys or not), they give you 8000 in chips, and at the 100 minute mark there is an hour break and the add-ons, which i am planning on commiting to 4 giving me an extra 20,000 in chips.

now, after i got the buyin i googled poker strategy's, and luckly enough came to FTR, greatest poker site ever... ever....

there are about 107 people in this tournement. i belive the prize pool is $20,000;

1st: 11,000
2nd: 5,000
3rd: 2,000
4th/5th: 1,000

i am still reading over all the posts i can, trying to gain as much knowlage as possible, but if you guys can give me some advice in this thread so i can use it as a referance, that would be kickass.

I dont think you can buy more than 1 addon...

unless you're rich, don't invest much money. Can you sell the seat?

yes, i can still sell the ticket, but honostly, i do not want to... its not like i'm a complete n00b to poker, but i am some what novice. my exact reason for comming to FTR, to learn. and besides, why give up my chance at 11k, free chance.

if i can only get one add-on, so be it. i'll ask when i go to the sattilite this weekend.

Have fun if you want, your 400 bucks. But it's not free. The general tone of your posts makes me think you're a pretty big dog to win. I think you'd get a lot more value taking the 400 and trying to get a roll started if you want to learn how to play poker. If you're never going to play again, knock your self out. Good luck!

well after thinking it over, the 400 bucks i was going to spend on add-ons, and since it is my first larger tournement, that could easily be used to make a bankroll to start to learn poker better.

and now im starting to think that threre is a max of 1 add-on (i know its a noob question, but is there usualy a max?), i am only commiting myself to max 1 add-on if you are aloud more then one.

i really, would like to play this tourement, i know the chances of me winning, are fairly slim. but you have to start somewere, right? and i guess winning a seat to this tourney is a good way for me to start. atleast it will give me a right of look at what i need to work on.

im totaly not expecting to win, im expecting to not even come close to the final table. but you can't tell me that you never started somewere either...

ill play the tourney, and i'll play another, its not like it's going to devistate me to loose. it's a lesson learned. i'll learn from my mistakes, atleast try. and with the help of FTR, i'll be able to minimize them.... hopefully

i have been, 3-4 freeroll tourneys on pokerstars /per day, i usualy finish in the top 300, i feel like i am getting better every time i play. ive had some hard beats on it... like AA vs. KK last night, he was ahead of me, someone went all in with what soon turned out to be 83 os, i called all-in with the rockets, i was on small stack, and the villian called both with wat turned out to be KK...

now i did not feel bad loosing to his tips that he got on the turn... i was small stack, i had to make my move. and i lost. but i did think about some thing...

if you are being raised all-in pre-flop with AA (middle position) and small stack, would it really be a crime to throw them away, if you have a possible call comming after you would call all-in, it could easily be a high pair that can end up beating yours with trips, both players in the pot next to you have over-stacks, making it threatening to possibly get knocked out by connectors or a lower pair.... just a though of stratagy to stay in a tourement a little longer

Sell the seat for 250.

Put the money on stars and start playing SNG's and MTT's.

k let me rephrase the whole thing...

im playing this tournement, i asked for advice ON the tournement, NOT on weither i should play it or not... i am NOT selling my ticket, and if this is all im going to get, then a mod might as well close down this thread...

Sounds like you start pretty deep stacked. Read up on deepstack poker.

Also, as mentioned before, you're only allowed one addon. Also the payout structure sucks (5% wtf).

Dude, good on you for having the resolve to play in the tourney. I think before you play there though, get some practice playing real money online MTTs, you won't learn very much from the freeroll tourneys because a) people dont take it seriously enough and b) the quality of the opposition is generally poor; playing against tough competition makes you tough.

Also, almost all experienced players will never advocate folding aces preflop (except in very very exceptional bubble circumstances). If you get it all in with aa preflop then you have done a good job and if someone sucks out on you so be it.

tonight im putting 50 bucks on stars and am going to start playing small MMT's and SNG's to practise...

well i put money down on stars last night, lost about 1/3 of what i put down, just plaid small S'N'Gs all night... it has really showen me that i make TONNES of stupid call's and riases... i've allredy started to note them

go to a bookstore and buy Harrington on Hold'em 1 and 2. Read both and understand them. You will be better for it since they focus on tournies.

It would be a horrible horrible crime. If you are short stacked you need chips and this is about as good a chance as youre going to get to make some.

well... the big day was today, went, registered, ate some steak and egg's... man, casinos make the best breakfast... steak&eggs and a beer.... 7 BUCKS! thats what i call breakfast.. breakfast... neway, onto the tournement.

i started out fairley good, meeting my first break goal in only 2 orbits (my goal was 10,000 by the first break and i got there with 10,900 with the add-on making it 15,900 in chips, second in chips at my table.

i plaid the first hour relitivly tight to get a feel for the table.. and it was the most intense poker tourney i have ever been to... and i loved it...

after first break i gained a few more chips (about 5000 more), and lost 7000 the blinds, and a few starting hands i regret playing now, and have noted for the future. i hit a big pot when i moved to the second table.. witch by the time i was there, it was down to the last 72 (8 tables), 120 some started... maybe a little more... but yea.. the big pot... poket 8's in 3rd position, riase the pot 3BB, get 2 callers, flop comes Q84 rainbow, bet 1/2 the pot to see were i am, get a re-raise all-in, i think about it, and he didnt re-raise pre-flop, witch browt down the liklyhood of QQ in my opinion, as we were about even when this happened. i call. he flops trip 4's, i got trip 8's, they held up.

after 2 more tables vanishing, i was down to the final 5 tables, and a few people left, 2nd position, small stack goes in for 13,000 in chips, i looks down to KQs, and i really thought it through, and i regret it to death now, and will never play KQ that frivilous again, i get another caller a few seats down.

flop came down just garbage, and i check, he bets 1/2 my stack, and for the life of my, i do not know why i even thought about calling, BUT I RE-RAISED ALL-IN... OMG, WTF AM I FUCKING DOING, he almost isntantly calls, with QQ, and no K came, the all-in short stack got A9os, yea, the queens held up, and i just feel stupid for tilting on one hand... it shows me i have to learn alot... witch i plan on doing.

but i think for my first highstakes tourney, 39th/~120 or 130 isnt, that, bad.

i know im going to practise and go at'er again as soon as something that big comes to town again.

At this point there is NO REASON for him to be bluffing as his bet creates a side pot if you want to create one. The reason this should never be a bluff is that he is betting half your stack, and he wins NOTHING if you fold, because of the all-in player.

i know, and i totaly realized that this morning when after i woke up, with a clear head, along with some other few mistakes i made. i noted them really, really well on how i plaid the hand, and why i did what i did.

i picked up Harrington on Hold'em 1 and 2, along with "Phil Hellmuth's Texas Hold'em"

this tournement really opened my eyes more to poker, and showed me that if i get more serious with it, and hone my skills, i wont be 1/2 bad at the game... it also gave me more insentive to win next time theres a tourney like this in town.

Good try... Kinda sucks that you seem to have played pretty good for a long period of time and got owned by a complete newb mistake :D

But thats okay you did much better then a lot of people that probley have more experience then you, so you are sure to get even better.
