I have no soapbox to chat on, and this issue has been pissing me off for a long time. I need to vent.
Baseball did not outlaw Steroids until recently. It was not cheating to use Steroids in the late 90's. Bonds was never caught using sustances against baseball rules.
There are at least 1000 dumbass baseball reporters that completely miss this fucking point.

Havent steroids been illegal since at least the 80's though by Federal Government standards? So wouldnt that make them illegal to use in baseball also. I dont have facts on that though, its just when I was powerlifting I seem to remember guys being arrested for selling them.
I hate this shit, I don't want to turn on SportsCenter and watch an hour of Bonds. I want to see college basketball. I really could care less. I like baseball but this is ridiculous.

If you read the book excerpts, Bonds sounds very much like a cheater and a total sleazeball to boot.
Legally, if nothing else - he obviously perjured himself in a federal case when he told the grand jury, among other things, that he didn't know, and that "it was like, whatever, dude." Hubris, anyone??
Personally, I hope he goes down over it.
Well steroids shrank his dick so I guess he got what he desrves give him the hall of fame he will need it when girls laugh at him :)

I Don't care what anyone has done in the past but it is extremley obvious they need to do mandatory tests for every player, multi-times a year.
They also need to fund research for ways to find drugs in tests that are usually hidden from drug tests.
So, back to my point then. Since MLB doesn't have specific rules on the books about caring a gun during a game, everyone should be allowed to carry? Don't get me wrong, that MIGHT be interesting...but it doesn't make a lot of sense.Quote:

Has the issue been driven by congressional hoopla and by sports reporting from people who just love to be on the 'hard hitting' and 'thought provoking' stories in sports so they can feel like they're getting mileage from their 2nd and 3rd rate college degrees? Yes.
Has it been perpetuated by baseball wonks who can't stand seeing their precious records assualted by the infidels? Of course.
I want my reps to the US House to do a lot of other things besides meddle in professional baseball. I want to see actual sports on Sportscenter, and don't bug me w/ Outside the Lines.
I don't give a shit about the sanctity of baseball records. Add or don't add asterisks all you want, I don't care.
Steroids have been technically illegal in baseball since at least 2003.
I don't know whether the junk he was using was against the law of the land. It's at least borderline. At any rate, even if something isn't technically illegal, that doesn't mean it's not wrong.
So, what happened with Bonds? He got involved in some shady stuff and got mixed up in a juicy story. People showed interest in the story, and some good reporters did a good job digging up the facts for the public. Good for them.
When a public figure knowingly gets involved in shady business, moreso when he's cheating, he shouldn't cry foul when he's exposed. Bonds has no recourse. The stories make him look like a dirtbag, and there's nothing he can do about it. He deserves all the shame that's being heaped on him, plus whatever censure comes from MLB or elsewhere.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Major League Baseball will investigate alleged steroid use by Barry Bonds and other players, and plans to hire former U.S. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell to lead the effort.
A baseball official told The Associated Press on Wednesday that final plans were to be announced Thursday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because commissioner Bud Selig has not yet made his intentions public.
Selig's decision to launch the probe, first reported Wednesday by ESPN, comes in the wake of Game of Shadows, a book by two San Francisco Chronicle reporters detailing alleged extensive steroid use by Bonds and other baseball stars. The commissioner has said for several weeks that he was evaluating how to respond to the book.
Some in Congress have called for an independent investigation. Mitchell, a Maine Democrat and a director of the Boston Red Sox, has been a director of the Florida Marlins and served on an economic study committee that Selig appointed in 1999.
Mitchell's possible involvement was first mentioned Wednesday in The New York Times. The name of a lawyer who will run the mechanics of the probe also was to be announced.
No matter what the findings of an investigation, it would be difficult for baseball to penalize anyone for steroids used prior to Sept. 30, 2002, when a joint drug agreement between management and the players' association took effect. Baseball began drug testing in 2003 and started testing with penalties the following year.
"I will only comment on things about Barry's on-field performance or contractual status," said his agent, Jeff Borris.
It is unclear whether current or former players would cooperate with an investigation or could be forced to do so by baseball. Gene Orza, the chief operating officer of the Major League Baseball Players Association, declined comment.
Under pressure from Congress, baseball toughened penalties last year and again this season, when an initial positive test will result in a 50-game suspension. Twelve players, including Rafael Palmeiro, were suspended for 10 days each following positive tests last year.
Game of Shadows details alleged used of performance-enhancing drugs by Bonds for at least five seasons beginning after the 1998 season.
Former commissioner Fay Vincent called this month for an investigation and suggested it be headed by Mitchell or John Dowd, who led baseball's 1989 probe into gambling by career hits leader Pete Rose, who agreed to a lifetime ban.
