i lost 5 buyins in like 2 hours yesterday. i had an absolutely atrocious session and was completely thrown for a loop. i was making some very bad plays and not catching cards where i needed to catch them.
yuck. so i'm just doing some $11's on PP now. they seem to be easier then the $5+.50s on PS.
hang in there, dude. just keep playing solid poker and you'll pull through. i don't have a graph, but my worst was similar to yours. it was like 17-18 buyins over probably about 25k hands. it started at 5-10nl, and i ended up dropping back down to 2-4nl just to regain some confidence (which helped a lot, and probably saved me some cash, too). at any rate it was over $10k by the time it ended, ugh. it did come right after a big upswing so i didn't go busto, but it's still tough when you're in the middle of it. fyi, i've had at least 3 of these large swings since i started playing online and tracking stats 2+ yrs. ago, maybe more. i fully expect there will be some more, but at least now i practice some better bankroll management techniques so they don't scare me as much.
I've had quite a few 5-6 buyin downswings before but not too many 10+ buyin downswings. One of my good buddies who plays 10/20 on Party has had a lot of sick downswings in a far shorter span of hands. Honestly you should take a break from poker, maybe a week or two to clear your head.
ive played abuot 100k hands of shorthanded poker and never had anything close to a 20 buyin drop. ive had 10 buyin drops happen 3 or 4 times, though.
johnny I dropped about 13 buyins at 2/4 NL last week. I havn't played a whole lot since, but I've gotten about 2 of them back. Fuzzy math, it's all in my blog though.
Just played for 2 hours, dropped another 4 buy-ins with some awful play. I'm taking a few days off now. I'm going to post these hands to remind myself later to always play good or just don't play at all.
First hand. Villain is a solid Tag, I put him on a middle pair and I tried to represent a 5 or something better. Should've folded flop/turn.

Fourth hand: Why are you pushing this flop? This is a terrible flop for you. Just fold to the raise.
hand 1: wtf? pot was yours with a river bet... but what the hell is going on here? villain doesn't really look like a solid tag calling that turn raise.
Those are some tough hands - especially when you are down on your luck coupled with mini-tilt. You expect you'll get a break but it does not come. Plus, any time you feel you get a slight edge, you're itching to win back a buyin.
You'll come back - you are too good not to. You had a nice steady progression before the peak. Take your time and play steady again.
when I first started playing, before i found FTR, I said fuck it when I had 127 dollars left in my bank roll and jumped to the 5/10 limit tables built it up to 1300 in 2 weeks and lost 1100 in six days you feel like god when you win it and like shit when you loose it
In December I had about 4k worth of bankroll and played some 200NL and got my ass kicked. I dropped down to 100NL and got my ass kicked, I dropped down to 50NL and got my ass kicked. I was trying to play lag and wasn't really counting on poker for any bills since I was working...I played like shit and didnt post here much. In January my bankroll was down to $660. Talk about wanting to win a lot of money back quickly...
I took a break, went back to the solid TAG style, and set my mind on rebuilding. I hit a $500 hollywood poker bonus and played 25NL and then hit $1k and moved up to 50NL and maybe hit another bonus. Then I switched to a badass rakeback deal at carnaval poker and played 100NL and kicked ass + got a load of rakeback back. Hit $6K in May and switched to party 200NL and ran good, moved to party 400NL and ran good and hit $12k yesterday. Tried two tabling 600NL and moved my ass right the hell back down to 400nl. I wish I had a graph for all this.
Downswing?

Can't you change your name on party every 6 months? I never have but I think it was lampchop that told me that.
Currently in the middle of a 10 buy-in downswing in under 4k hands. I feel like shooting myself.

Variance is brutal. For example, I've been doing really well in the 1/2 game lately. But yesterday for instance, I played a bit over 4,000 hands, and I had a 7 buyin downswing that followed a 5 buyin upswing. Coincidentially, I finished the day down about 2 buyins. Minor (yes minor) stuff like that just happens. That happened at 1/2 though so that's not accounted for in the graph.
The graph shows my journeys at NL400 and NL600 (the NL600 was for an insignificant amount of hands, but it accounted for about -2K during a period which is pretty easy to spot :)) Also, this doesn't count the NL400 and NL600 I played back in my days as a newb on pacific.

I lost 6 buyins this morning, got 5 of them back now tho. 6max on party is like a big dipper its crazy out there. Biggest down swing ive had is 17 in about 15k hands.
