Help me stop sucking at 200NL

I've been cleaning up at 100NL 6-max at about 8 BB/100 over 50K hands, but every time I try to move up to 200NL I just get my ass kicked. When I first started it, I was doing pretty well, but then I lost 6 buyins in a day, moved down and beat the crap out of 100NL for awhile, and today I moved back up to 200NL and promptly dropped 5 more buyins. I'm going to do what gabe does and post all the big pots I played today and hopefully people can give me some general advice about what I'm doing wrong, if anything. I'm sort of at a loss about where to go from here, I don't want to keep grinding 100NL forever.

Hand 1: Villain is 40/18. On a previous hand I saw him 3-bet all-in on the turn with top pair, garbage kicker when there were 3 diamonds on board, and got stacked by a flush.

Mcat: 200nl 6max is a very soft game. There is no doubt you will be able to crush it. You're probably just experiencing some downward variance. Give it time and things will turn around.

Yes, I like to make it between 3.5 and 4 times the original raise. When I make it less than that I find that people call with anything they raised with and that's not a good thing since I re-raise more often than most people do.

Hand 1: While getting great odds, the board is super coordinated and you beat nothing. Fold the turn.

Hand 2: While we all do it, it's best to not second barrell vs a calling station. Standard vs most players though.

Hand 3: Standard until the river, I think you have to fold here without a good read.

Hand 4: I'd bet smallish on the river as a value bet.

Hand 5: Standard.

Hand 6: I'd lead the flop, but as played nice hand.

Hand 7: Standard.

Hand 8: Standard.

Hand 9: Cool river.

Hand 10: Fold to the preflop reraise, QJ is not the hand to call a reraise with, this is why.

And *poof* go 4 more buy-ins. I lost a ton of small pots to the Saturday night short stacks, the only big pot was this ridiculous hand that let me know I should just call it a night before I lost the rest of my bankroll. Just kidding, I think.

It's going to be months before I have the confidence to step back into 200NL. It's going to suck to play at a level where I have a bankroll of 200 buyins or more but I guess that's what I have to do if I'm such a huge losing player at the next level.

Will this make you feel better? Only 4 people on the table since one guy was on sitout and we get these hands. That's a $600 turnaround (instead of winning $400, I lost $200). It became more when I lost another $350 later - one full buyin when I tilt pushed a flush draw that didn't hit against a maniac. I'm a break even player at 200NL (was up $500 before tonight). I have a great night, give it back the next, great night, give it back the next. I do well at 100NL too but I don't really notice a huge skill difference. That's the main reason I stay with 200NL. The main difference I have found is stacking off with TPTK. At 100NL it seems +EV - at 200NL it doesn't. Another difference is more players will pay attention to table image so if you play tight and get cold cards, it will be hard to get action when you do get a couple hands. One more thing is you have to really concentrate on each hand to eliminate errors. It's like playoff time - you have to have your A game every night. I have played fairly well recently, but I have run into some really bad luck. The hand below doesn't bother me that much except it really killed my momentum.

It sure seems to me like the skill difference is similar but my results sure don't bear that out. That's why I keep taking shots at it, I see a table full of players making really terrible plays, sit down and lose my money anyway.

And of course I played 100NL for 3 hours today and finished up $750. I really don't understand what's going on here, most people on this board say there's no difference in player quality between 100NL and 200NL, maybe I just have some sort of mental block.

I just dropped back down to $100 NL, looking back on hand histories i'll say about 30% of money lost was off mistakes, 30% on bad beats, and 40% on the fact that 200nl is absolutely NOTHING like 100nl. Over half of the players are wanna-be TAGs that cant lay down a hand. C-bets at 200nl get ZERO respect. Yes I said it, c-bets get more respect at 100nl then 200nl. The players at Party 6-max 200nl will float on almost any flop and bet/raise any non-scary turn. I understand that some of these strategies are successful and necessary at higher stakes but its a tad ridiculous at 200nl. Its near impossible to confidently get your stack in with anything less than 1st or 2nd nuts because putting these guys on a hand is impossible. I admit defeat, I don't have the skill to beat these psychos. My honest opinion is that most of them are a bunch of pretty good players who are trying to move past set farming and learn to read hands but they suck at it so they make completely random and retarded plays which make zero sense. The side effect of this, you can't read them worth shit because they don't even know what they are doing. Well, i've been told Full Ring on Party still has actual fish so i've been working on making the switch. Mcatdog I completely understand your frustration tho, i moved down to 100nl and immediately crushed it, its so different its scary.

Well my input now makes 3 players who destroy 100nl and either get owned or break even at 200nl. My girlfriend was looking up some stuff on 2+2 and other places last nite and said we aren't the only ones. I refuse to believe that we are all simulatenously getting major variance hits at 200nl whenever we move up. 1 person = likely, 3+ people = no. My opinion - 200nl 6-max has become oversaturated with TAGs and maniacs. They take up the large majority of my PT database. The good fish are few and far between and almost all of them are shortstack ninjas. So the options are A. Step our games up like 4-5 levels so we can crush a table full of TAGs or B. Find greener pastures. I'm taking option B. Just my .02.

sooooo..........what are you saying is....the players wont stack with less than TPTK, they pay attention to table image, and you have to put forth extra effort because if u make the slighest mistake the players will make you pay.........but the skill level is the same.........um........um.....huh?????.......if someone asked me what happens when u move up skill levels...i would probably send them the summary of 200nl you just wrote.

Really good post. It's really crushing to play at a table (or, a stake) where everyone keeps floating and reraising you, etc. My game also works better at tables where my raises and cbets get actual respect.

Maybe it would be good to figure out a strategy (conceptually) to beat these floater-tables? I'm gonna be thinking about this some more. Thanks for the food for thought :D

Well I have quite similar winrates for 100NL and 200NL.

I find the Party 200NL 6-max game to be quite loose with a lot of bad LAGS, try to re-raise(about 3x the pot) pre flop with a clearly wider range than against the typical player.

When you have a hand against a habitual floater you should check/call or check/raise the turn more often and continuation bet the flop less often with hands that miss.
If they auto bet any flop you check to them then replace your continuation betting with more check raising.

I did contradict myself by saying the skillset is the same and then pointing out some differences. However, I feel the differences can be counteracted with some minor adjustments. Coco_Bill alluded to that - the differences aren't extreme. With the differences I poined out, most of the work has to do with me/you evolving. I'm sticking with 200NL because of this. Like most people I want to make more money playing poker and at the same time I want to get better. I'm willing to have some ups and downs short term for a chance to improve my game even if it means I lose some money. Sometimes I have to be smacked in the face several times before I come to a realization in poker and in life. But once get to that point I start to see that and other things clearer and really excel. It may take a while due to my high tolerance for pain (poker pain that is) but it will happen.

I don't know if 100vs200vs400 has a similar issue as 25vs50vs100 did. Almost everyone thought 100 was easier than 50 (full ring at least). In fact, I grinded out 25 until I had enough for 100 and then skipped 50. I won't do that here because I think I have tons of leaks that can be worked out at 200. In reality I think I could play very tight (semi-passive) and play more tables and have a 2+BB/100 winrate at 200NL but that won't improve my game.

I don't know what bankrolls you guys have, but if you want to crush 100NL until you are overly bankrolled for 200NL, that might help. I have 40+ buyins. I really get upset when I drop 2+ buyins, but it doesn't scare me very much. Party has 100-200 in bonus money a month and then if you have a way to reclaim a percentage of your rake, that should cover some downswings until the upswings greatly outweight them.

I have 80 buyins for 200NL and I know that lambchop has hundreds of buyins for it. Bankroll management isn't relevant if you're not a winner though!

I won $2000 my first week at 200NL so I'm not really down that much overall. My overall results up to this point are -1K over 11K hands. I've gotten over my frustration at losing 2K on Saturday and I do think I'm capable of becoming a winning player at 200NL. I understand what you're saying about playing in tougher games to improve your skills as a player, however, at this point I'm going to stick with 100NL for two reasons.

1. You don't need to play higher stakes to improve your game, you just need to find a tougher table at lower stakes, and practice your skills there. I do this from time to time. There are some 100NL tables that are full of TAGs like lambchop described, and if I'm not sure I'm a winner at that type of table. I'd rather risk less money to get the same amount of practice.

2. 6-tabling 100NL with my current winrate adds up to about 100 bucks an hour. If you would have told me a year ago that I could get paid 100 an hour to play a computer game, I think I would have cried. Bottom line, I'm happy with my winrate and I'm going to stay there until I think I'm ready to move up.

i would encourage you to continue taking shots at $200nl cash games with some regularity:

1. don't feel like all six tables have to be $200nl ones, maybe just start mixing half and half or even just one or two $200nl tables. you don't just flip a switch and all of a sudden you're a $200nl player, it's a process that takes time. you will go up and down between levels a few times before you hit the stride you need to commit to $200nl.

2. your bankroll is huge, many players would look at $16k as a viable $3/6 bankroll. so keep up those good BR management skills and you won't ruin.

3. focus on confidence: when those $200 river bluffs no longer seem scary, that is a better indicator of your ability to play correctly and completely at the higher level than any shortterm small sample could ever tell you. additionally, playing more often at the higher level will give you more confidence in the $100nl game you play. in turn, that will help keep your bankroll afloat and provide a solid foundation from which to make the total plunge to the $200nl level.

Yeah, you found a place where you can make good money! Ofcourse you want to see if you make even more, but seriously.. with this kind of income, it's fine as it is too, right?

My goal is something like this too. Ideally I want to be able to beat 600NL. But if it's lower, that's fine too. If I can consistently beat a stake like 100NL, then I'll work on adding enough tables to get a good $$/hour and I'm happy.

lambchop -- have you changed your tune at NL200? Is it beatable?

Here is a theory (since I don't even play $50NL much):

Table selection is more important at $200NL than $100NL.

alternate (not exclusive) theory:

Poker site variation is more important at $200NL than $100NL

bonus theory:

the folks that say that 200NL is no harder than 100NL are better players. This is kind of a harsh statment, but consider it. We know that we are all half decent players with a clue - but clearly we are not all equal in skill, at some level of game, the difference in skill level /styles between FTRs is going to show.

I've only played 100NL since I posted this. Actually I've been real busy and didn't play at all in the past week, until tonight. Even though I made about a buy-in, I could tell that my game was way off and I'm not going to take another shot at 200NL until I'm back in the swing of things.
