Hard to tell without reads. Against an unkown I would fold this too. There's not a whole lot a hands you beat on the river other than a complete bluff, 99-TT would probably check behind.

I don't necessarily lead turn.

I just call river (as played) since I doubt villain puts me on qq

I also like 1/2 pot blocking bet on river... fold to raise obv.

i bet turn more than not just so i dont get in the situation you ended up in. i call as played though.

Basically so you don't get in this position. if you're gonna check call, why not just lead, anyone with half a brain will take this off you if you check turn and river, you've semi telegraphed your hand.

If he calls the turn than you can check/ put in a blocker bet on the river and fold to a reraise.

Obviously easier if you had some reads on the guy.

If I lead the turn all that happens is that sets raise and hands that I beat, like 99, fold. When I check, sets miss a bet and hands which I bet will take a stab.

Then I folded the river because I think marginal hands check behind in this spot.

Yeah, you're right.

I think if you compare the mistake of causing him to not put any more $ in with the worst hand vs. the mistake of folding the best hand on the river, then you can see what's more +ev.

It doesn't all come down to whether betting causes all worse hands to fold or not, but if villains wouldn't bluff twice, then it's more +ev to c/c since u know where u stand after he bets again.

I think I'd call the river as played, looks like a set or nothing.

avoiding tough situations is +ev in itself.. if you know checking here can cause you to make a big mistake later, than betting (even if it is -ev, which i doubt it is) overall is better.
