Operation ''Become an MTT king in 2 months''

Hi, I am 21 years of age and from the UK.

Ok, so i have Until the end of March to exclusively play poker (before i head off to USA and Australia on a 3 month trip).

Obviously, i could do with winning some money to help me with my trip.

I have 2 months to hopefully make enough money to cover my trip (around 8000 dollars). The interesting thing about this is that i intend to do it via playing MTT's exclusively.

I have been playing a misture of cash games and MTT's on the internet and live for around 1 and a half years now, and have turned a modest profit. I intend to play tournies on the following sites: William hill, ladbrokes, poker stars and pacific poker (for their amazing 10k guarenteed tournies).

The stakes i will be starting playing for are probably from 20 dollar FO's and 5 dollar rebuys up to 100 dollar FO's and 20 dollar rebuys. And i also intend to play alot of tournies each day.

My Starting Bank roll will be around 4000 dollars across the 4 sites i mentioned earlier. I hope i can turn this BR into 12000 dollars. I hope this is possible via only MTT's, even though i have heard it said it is very hard to win consistant money at MTT's with most people looking to make money playing cash games.

I find playing playing tournies far more interesting than playing cash games, and the feeling of winning a MTT is so amazing.

Anyway, i will update this thread every day i play for anyone who is interested in my 'operation'.

Ok, So my starting bankroll is actually going to be $3664. Hopefully i can cash in a few tournaments and win some money!! I cant work out whether it is best to play around 50 tournaments a day or to play around 10 a day and concentrate on each tournament i play in more. Think i will probably go for a half way house and play in around 4 tournies at a time!

I couldnt decide whether to limp, fold, go all in or just raise here. opted to raise to 1200 - which i think was a mistake because i lost fold equity and commited myself. A raise to 900 was not enough cos the limper was bound to call. I should of pushed.

This was the very next hand. I didnt want to call off a quarter of my stack and so it was simply reraise all in or fold. I folded cos he was not a maniac and it was an EP raise. Sure - i am ahead a fair amount of the time but i am also dominated alot of the time i think.

This was two hands later. This was a marginal push, but i felt i was ahead (i knew that the SB was either very strong or not too strong). As it happened he had KQ and it was a race i was lucky to win. I decdied to go all in because 1) i knew UTg didnt have to have much to move all in. 2) i knew that the SB knew that UTG didnt have to have much to move all in. Thus, i concluded his call smelt of something like a9, a10, aj, KQ, KJ, 99, 88, 77. I thought it was worth the risk to try and win a huge pot.

This is just an insight into how i think during an MTT - how do you view these hands? do u think i made mistakes?

Well on the 8-8 hand its not the limper you have to worry about, but the 3 big stacks still left to play.With those stacks I would opt to push or fold for a win. Or call and hopefully you hit a set against a big stack (but with blinds 150-300 I wouldnt recomend it.

A decent day, although my luck seemed to desert me on final tables and I didn’t win any races, or even when I had the other person dominated. Anyway, cant complain, it was a decent day.

hehe, yea u are right, but the main annoyence to me was that i ran into alot of good situations early and got to alot of final tables. then it all seemed to fall apart on the final tables! although i did manage to win two of them!

dilema over - qualified at the 2nd attempt for a total of 50 dollars

I didnt have a great day today, but it could of been worse. Several final tables but failed to get heads up in any of them which is disapointing. I qualified for the sunday million in a sattelite. I was in for 50 dollars but busted with AKs vs JJ in a 20k pot after around 90 minutes. Never mind.

Hmm, i achieved my operation in three days of pure MTT's! Now i guess my next goal is to try to get my bank roll to 30k, as this will pay for rent and my travels for next year. Hopefully i can do this.

I had an exciting last tournament of the day today - the 25 dollar 1300+ freezeout on PS which i managed to win for $5200, which is my biggest score to date. Heads up, me and my rival took $4200 each and played for the last $1000. i won our heads up match and am veryu happy now!!

I agree with you. That means i am rolled for 100 dollar FO's now. I might keep playing the 20-50 dollar freezeouts at the moment with odd shots at larger tournaments. Bet365 and PS seem to have to good larger buy in tournies each day

Update:

Have to go out soon for swimming training and so cant start any tournaments now. going to play as many as i can tonight though. just played some cash games and won $1100. things certainly went my way as i didnt play that well i dont think. two big hands:


1) I had $600 at NL 1000. Villian had 5 times buy in stack. My image is crazy loose on this site, which means i play alot of hands very fast and find that top pair no kiker is often good for all my chips!

Guy on button raised to 40 dollars on Button, i was BB with QJ. I called and so did a limper. Flop came AQJ, i bet out 40 into a 120 pot looking for the pre flop raisor to raise me witrh an ace and then i could go all in. He raised to 140 and i pushed. he called with K10 for the nuts. Turn was 7 of clubs giving me a flush draw and then river was a jack giving me the house and a $1200 pot. Lucky me!


2) NL2000, 3 handed, i have $1400 and Button has $2000. I am on the BB.

Button makes it 60 to play, SB calls, I raise to $240 with Ace 7 suited. Button calls and SB folds. Flop comes K75, I check looking for a check raise where he might lay down KQ or 88-QQ. He checks behind. NExt card is a 7, bingo! I make it $140 - trying to faint weakness with something like AQ or JJ. He makes it $380 to play and i push for my last $600 over the top. He thinks for a while and then folds. Think he probably had something like 99. Anyway, that hand made me another $600.

Conclusion:

I was lucky. My super LAgg fairly high stakes cash play has caused me huge swings in the past as u might be able to guess. I am a far better MTT player. However, the only reason i can play well post flop in MTT's now is because of the last 6 months that i have spent playing a lagg game at cash games in which i constantly have to make marginal post flop decisions.

Might try to qualify for the nightly 100 grand on p-stars tonight. Unfortunatly cant play the $300 $60,000 guarenteed tourny on ladbrokes tonight cos i am not in. bit gutted about this as am feeling good about my game at the moment. Also miss the two 10k GTD tournies on pacific poker and the £12k GTD £50 Fo on willaim hill. Still should be some good tournies going on when i am get back though.

Okay dude... you are VASTLY underrolled for the $1000 and $2000 games. I have no idea if your skill level is sufficient but seriously, stop playing at these stakes or you will lose all your holiday money. I am deadly serious - it's not worth the ENORMOUS risks you're taking.

If you want to play cash inbetween MTTs, then you're rolled for $400NL (though again, do you have the skills? No reason to assume not, though if you're playing a laggy, high variance game even 31 buyins may not be enough and perhaps you should consider $200).

I really don't mean to be patronising - I can't even win at $100 so I'm not one to talk - but playing those stakes with that roll is a recipe for swift and inevitable disaster.

u r right. But at first i was just having fun with $600 dollars that i was prepared to lose. This got turned into $1200 and so i then just took a pop at NL2000 with this money. Had i lost my first $600 i would of just stopped playing cash. I play cash on what i am prepared to lose rather than to make serious money. It wasnt like i waS going to play NL2000 and lose 12k on a downswing!

U R right tho dude, it was a mistake to play. I think from now on i just wont play cash games as i could of eaasily lost $600 that i worked hard for in my MTT's.

Yes, your logic is flawed.

The $600 is YOUR MONEY just like all the rest, and should be treated as such. It's not such a big crime, no, but ultimately you'll start to lose, and not only is your roll shrinking (and your holiday will be $600 less fun) but there's always the chance it'll tilt you into chasing your losses - and tbh your attitude makes me suspicious that this could happen.

If you want to play cash games, play at a level that you're rolled for. It'll still be fun and challenging but at far less of a risk.

I know I seem like a fogey but this stuff is important. If you play out of your roll you WILL go bust. Stick to what you're good at, yes - if you only have like an hour, play an SNG instead of cash - it'll use your skills and risk far less of your roll.

Ok i understand what u mean. that is a good idea too. if i only have a small amount of time from now on then i will just play a few SNG's. thanks for your help, i understand and agree with what u r saying and dont think i am going to play any cash anymore, even just to risk a small amount of my BR. BAd day:

Nothing went my way today, lost the majority of my races, had AK, KK, QQ run into aces and kings alot and basically got hammered by bad beats in huge pots. got to 1 FT and made mistakes at it which was frustrating!!! O well, hopefully tomorrow will bring me better luck. i intend to play a load of tournies tomorrow. I guess today was the bad luck to offset the decent fortune i got yesterday in my big tourny win.

I think that todaY I tried to play too many tournaments at a time. therefore i am going to follow a schedule for a few days to see how ti goes. This involves playing 26 tournaments in a day (unless i am out where i will obviously be able to play alot less tournies). This shud mean that i am not playing 14 tournies at a time and am instead playing around 6 or 7 (on average) - which i can deal with and make notes on other players.

Having another difficult day so far today. Getting outdrawn alot and losing a large percentage of my races. I can deal with this, but am worried cos i have no just gone out of two tournaments where i needlessly put my money in behind. i think this was partly due to the frustrations of the last two days, in which i am generally playing very good poker. Here is one of my horrendus mistakes:

MP villian has 3000 chips, i have 1500 on cut off. Blinds are 50/100

I have 99, MP raises to 400, i push, others fold and he calls with QQ. I dont improve and am knocked out.

A good day today after a terrible start with alot of bad luck

Then it turned round and i started winning my races. I made a huge mistake at a final table where i was chip leader and ended up busting 8th. this was due to tiredness, but i am still annoyed about it. never mind. a good day overall:

I have had an ok start to my aim to build a bank roll at MTT's, lthough i know i can do better.

Today has been bad so far. MAde 3 final tables and got busted 9th each time due to a combination of bad luck, no chips and bad play.

First one i was equal second in chips in a 22 dollar 180 man sng on ps. I had kings on sb, raised into my equal second place villian, he went all in flopped an ace and beat me.

Then the next FT i make i limp utg ewith aces and go all in on flop to find the chip leader has hit 21 pair form the bb. i took a risk and it back fired.

the last FT i had Aj and 6 times bb utg. i pushand run into kings.

All of these had top prizes of over 1k. And 2.4k in the case of the aces hand. Am in a few touyrnies now, but unless i cash big in one of them i coulod end up over $1k down for the day :(

I managed to turn round a potentially awful day by winning the 15 dollar 360 freezeout on poker stars. I had a huge chip lead with 4 left and then proceeded to suck out on 3 guys in 3 consecutive hands to win the thing. I am now second in the leaderboard of poker stars for this week. I am pretty sure i could overhaul first place and win the thing, but i cant play for a few days now due to other commitments. Oh well

Summary of the day:

Total winnings = $2059
Total entry fee's = $1863
Profit = $196
Current bankroll = $14434

I am pleased with how things have gone so far. In my first 6 days i think i have managed to probably in the region of 200-300 tournaments. I am now contemplating whtehr to just play around 6 high stakes tournies a day, or whether to keep plugging away at the 20-50 dollar MTT's that are occupying my time at the moment.

I may have missed something, forgive me, but aren't you now where you want to be BR wise? I'm not sure I'd risk it right now when you have the sure shot. That said, you are playing very well.

My advice is to play another 300 donkaments at 20-50 and then reevaluate.

It doesn't necessarily have to end bad though. At the end of december I went to watch the highest tables on prima and this character named "guguguy" was sitting at 50/100. Apparently he went on a similar heater as these guys, as he was playing 50NL just a few days prior. (railbirds were saying this and he confirmed) I saw him lose his stack and sit in again with his entire roll (~9k) He subsequently went on a heater and ran it up to like 150k. Then dropped it all on PLO or something.

Standard so far, but now in januari he was back (I think with money he had on FT) and played a small amount of hands on a super heater (30ptBB/100) and he is up like 300k now according to that highstakes tracking website.

Ok an update, i have been playing high stakes cash games over the last week or so. I won around $3000 when all was said and done (the story of how i ended up ayt this point is very interesting and very swingy but i wont go into it cos it is not important to my tournament play), and i have withdrawn this money and spent it all on things! I intend to start at the tournaments again now, going to be fun. My BR is still going to be calssed as $14434, as the cash game profits are not for my bank roll but simply for me to spend! lol

hopefully i can win a couple of tournies in the next couple of weeks and get my BR up some more :evil: . am feeling confident.

Ok, so i withdrew my profits from my tournaments and then played some cash games for a few weeks with good results. Am back to the MTT's now with my target being to try and win as much as possible!

Starting bank roll = $3052

Hopefully today will bring me a few cashes to welcome me back to the tournament world!
