Ok just a question....ive been playing poker for like 5 years and sauce has been the only one i have really discussed poker at length with for a couple years now. me and him are both from the felt everything never fold get yourself out of tough spots with sick plays school of poker, so anyone whos been playing for a couple years tell me how being a nit has become the new breed of good poker players. i think image might have a big part of it cuz people tend to wanna call me with anything so i get to felt my hand more. anyway im drinking and ranting about nits respond if necesary. sauce please make this rant make more sence for me if your not still drunk from white russians and HU with your mom all day. He lost btw. fucking n00b

There are so many terrible players down here that it makes more sense to 12-table at 18/14.
It's all about your hourly rate.

Obviously when you get to higher stakes, image means a lot more because people are paying attention.
I am sure all the Laggs are pwning the nits at 5/10 and up.

Euph, it's not so much playing more hands pre then taking advantage of the fact you get no action post.

Yea you can play really tight and make money at high limits, just you have to make sick laydowns Im not capable of making and sick bluffs which I am, but make too much. So dont play tight.

doesn't cocco_bill kill at 400-1k nl with 20/10 stats?
and has anybody else seen this dude "make_it_rain" on UB and FT with 20/10...he seems to win solidly at mid stakes.
also i agree with JL and ISF but being able to lag it up is good too.

It comes down to what do you think is more valuable
A) Playing more hands and getting paid off more
B) Playing fewer hands and abusing the hell out of your position postflop

the nits u see winning are winning because they pull some moves every now and then that are enough to keep people guessing....or they've just been hitting enough sets recently

yes

yea daut's value lines in general are decent and not super predictable but overall hes very exploitable, mostly because his range is so small.

preflop stays have nothing to do with things

I think its not a fair comparison, TBH. 20/10 in NL can mean a lot of things. He's playing 20% of his hands but it doesnt say which 20%. It doesnt imply top 20% either. Just 20%. In LHE you can put a guy on a range directly form his vpip/pfr because if he has a 20% vpip he's going to play exactly the top 20% of his hands (tighter in EP, probably closer to 16%, looser OTB, pushing 28% at times)

You know what would kick ass? A hud that updates itself based on where the person is in relation to the button. We all know people are tighter in EP than OTB - and those numbers are available in PT... someone get on it!

Someone's working on this. It shows 3-betting and positional stats. Haven't seen an update in awhile though.

As long as you don't play extremely tight such as <9/9 or extremely loose >45/45 for example, you can win - it's pretty much all about postflop play and adjusting to your opponants. you can take a guy who is 12/9 and another guy who is 32/28 - it's going to be the person with the better postflop skills who makes the money regardless of the preflop stats.

Since when was making big folds the most important aspect of a person's poker game? I think it's in like 5th place behind value betting, bluffing, making good reads, and dead bears.

A lot of the hands I post are ones where I called because I knew that was the right play but my gut was telling me otherwise. Then I post it to see if my understanding of what is the right play could be incorrect.

Good post mcat, I agree with this for sure.

But I think at the end of the day, making big (correct) folds, value betting at the right times and bluffing at the right times all comes down to making good reads. If you can't make good correct reads, then you can't do any of these other things properly.

And obviously, making good reads is strongly dependent on dead bears.

If you play well post-flop and manipulate your opponents the right way with tightish stats, you don't need to play a lot of hands. It also cuts down on your rake exposure.

this post is snazzy, but i think it overestimates/underestimates many things for comic effect.

Lets look at it the other way. What is the worst thing you can possibly do ev-wise in poker? Make a bad call.

Making fairly big laydowns vs readable players is sooooooooooooo important to a good winrate. Some people's ranges are so strong that its a massive mistake to make "crying" calls with overpairs/two pair/trips/etc. This is especially true in full ring, the game ive been playing, but it applies to shorthanded as well.

A while back i was playing 2/4 six max, flopped middle set on a flush board, and got stacked by a flopped flush all in on the turn. I chalked it to a 'cooler' and moved on. I showed it to nutsinho up to the turn action with the reads that i had on the guy (i think he was relatively loose/passive) and was like "what would you do?" He's like "well, he has a flush..."

And thats basically it. He had a flush 90+% of the time, and I still called a stack off. It was a clear fold, and I called because "i had a set."

Making a big laydown that's good is way better than making a good value bet, or making a good bluff. Its a simple matter of 70+bb saved is worth way more than a few bb gained on a bluff or a thin bet.

Good post Renton, I think you have a great point.

I think what mcat is saying is if you want to take your game to a higher level you have to stop focusing on making good laydowns and focus more on other aspects.

I'm not saying that making big folds is totally worthless, just that hands where you have a monster but a loose passive player or a nit obviously has a bigger monster really don't happen very often. It happens WAY more often that people fail to make an easy value bet, or miss out on a good spot to bluff. I'm also saying that if the only hands you think about after the fact are ones like the one you mentioned, you'll never get past a certain level. But sometimes it seems like all people ask around here is "should I fold this 2 pair." They're not asking the right questions about their game IMO.

Also, even the biggest nit is bluffing sometimes. I remember a hand at 200NL where I raised with AQhh and a nit called in the BB. The flop gave me the nut flush draw, I bet and he checkminraised. Based on previous history I was like 90% sure he'd flopped a set so I called looking for another heart. The turn was an ace and I raised his bet all-in (probably tilt), he insta-called with 55 drawing dead on one out.
