Getting your money in on the turn

I've haven't seen this discussed previously so forgive me if I have. I've only been playing on and off now for about three years.

One thing I've noticed if you want to build a decent pot get your money in on the turn. I have a few reassons for betting 1/2 the pot to almost the pot on the turn. Here they are:
1) Opponent may fold and you win.
2) Many people chase their outs.
3) Checking and betting on the river usually leads to the opponent folding once they realize they haven't hit their "gutshot". Therefore missed opportunity for more money.
4) If they hit their out at least you've made them pay the number of times they haven't.

I do this if I feel I've got pretty much the best of it, trips or better on a non scary board. I used to slow play my set hands and try to trap on the river. I.E. sitting their with a flopped full house checking down the turn for a river bet, only to make the river bet and have the person fold.

Any thoughts?

if you typically slowplay sets, of the non-boat variety, you are begging for trouble. maybe on a dry board flop, but not the turn, too, imo.

i'm not sure i understand your question, though? are you WANTING to get your money in on the turn? and wanting advice on how?

or are you commmenting on what you've noticed? that checking the flop, and leading 1/2 to psb on the turn has seemed to work for you?

Hi Chopper sorry about that. The post is a little vague. I guess I was just commenting on how it's much more profitable not to slow play. Yet when starting out I find a lot of newer players myself included try to get fancy or trappy.

I guess the comment is like you said don't slowplay you're asking for trouble.

glad you realize it. there ARE times to slowplay at lower stakes (assuming you are below 400 NL).

flopping quads
flopping top boats
maybe a nut flush
sets on dry boards (until the draw comes)

to name a few, but as a whole, just bet out!

you would slow play when you have a strong feeling betting would fold the table, and you have hit something strong enough the board can start to look scary, and you are still going to be best.

otherwise, if you slow play with less, you are asking for overflushes, overboats, oversets, and especially for your TPTK to let a ragged 2 pair suck you out when you shared the TP and his kicker hit on the river.

believe me (and i am certainly not the only one), if you give away free cards, you will get bitten.

better to win small pots than lose ANY pot. i constantly need to remind myself of that when i cant seem to get action on hands...and feel myself wanting to slowplay. call it FPS (fancy-play-syndrome), or whatever, but it will kill good hands everytime.

I rarely find not betting to be profitable. If I've got absolute nuts, especially if its staring the others in the face, then waiting till the river to bet doesnt help. Either I make a value bet and get a small pickup, or its folded. Calling to the river then doing a nice raise can work if you have position.

If I'm oop though, I generally do one of two things:

1. Standard bet (1/2-3/4 pot). Since this is identical to my normal betting patterns, and as I tend to c-bet a lot anyway, they may think I'm bluffing and call it. At low levels, lots of people think you're bluffing.

2. Min bet or 2xmin bet. Those silly little bets that either mean they hope noone hit but dont want to commit much to find out, or they hit a monster. Lots of people read these as a really weak bluff. You could get callers building your pot, or you could strike it lucky and get a reraise from someone trying to blow your 'bluff' out of the water.

Even if I feel betting will fold the table, I tend to bet it out. If they'll fold on the turn, they'll fold on the river, so lets move onto the next hand and get it over with.

Thanks Chopper great response as always. I'm playing $25 nl. So you're right just bet it out and let them pay you off. It has taken me some time to learn that. I just cashed out $400 and am just rebuilding my bankroll.
