It's my 4000th post and I just moved up to straight flush! You can ask me any question and I will answer (a bit like "The Well" posts on 2+2). May take me some time to reply though (time zone differences - I'm going to sleep!).

The only thing I wanted to say was a big THANK YOU to Tyson, Eric and Xianti for setting up and running a great forum and site. I've learned SO much over the last couple of years and wouldn't have won the ~$4k I have at poker without this site (they're not getting their hands on it though :wink:)

You seem like a baller with the stories you've told about people paying for your super high-end dinners and entrusting you to carry tens of thousands of dollars in cash on an airplane for them, and getting into poker games with people who have more money than God.

I work for a private equity fund. Basically what we do is we buy businesses, hold them for a few years whilst trying to make them run better, and hopefully sell them for a profit. I'm still relatively junior, but there are some people in this industry who have made some serious money.

When I play cash games I play 4 tables, occasionally I have played a second table (particularly if I have a second monitor connected - I usually play on a laptop that has a 15" screen).

No, I still have so much to learn about hold'em and its different varieties (single table SNGs, MTTs, NL cash, limit cash, HU tourney, HU cash etc) that there's more than enough for me to learn without worrying about another game. That said, I would like to learn to play Omaha H/L at some stage, some friends of mine play that and they say those games are softer than hold'em with less variance.

Since I have avatars and sigs off, I've never noticed I didn't have one. A little while back I tried to use the snake picture I use on Stars but it was too big so I gave up.

Re MTTs, I'm trying to play a few more of them (mostly $4.40/180s) because if I ever want to scratch the itch of playing in a big MTT I'm going to need to learn to play them. That said, I've got an issue with a) the amount of time these MTTs take and b) my mid-game sucks as I'm not used to playing on full tables, significant blinds but 25-30x BB stacks. Something to work on I guess!

Omaha h/l is a fun game, totally different then Holdem, I dont think it has less variance, you should give it a try

I started playing play money on Stars in 2002/03 following the recommendation of a friend. I then stopped playing for some reason and came back to the game in February 2005 when I played $0.01/0.02 NL cash. I discovered SNGs in August 05 and have played them ever since.

It was pretty bad. I just kept on reviewing my HHs and posting hands, was very self-critical of my play and ruthlessly looked for leaks. If I knew that I made the right play each time it helped me deal with the inevitable bad beats. Not chasing losses by either playing more and more tourneys whilst angry or (even worse) moving up helped too!

Yes, the long flat patch (actually due to the scale of the Sharkscope chart it's actually a 30 buyin downswing from peak to trough) was at the $6.50 turbos, then the spike was when I moved to the $16 and $27 games. Main reason - variance! Secondary reason - sub-optimal play. I thought I was playing fine at the time but reviewing the HHs I could see many leaks. Fixing those and gritting my teeth to ride out the downswing was probably the main things I did.

I pretty much beat them straight away before hitting my big downswing. That's the funny thing about variance in poker, you can never really know when you're beating a certain level until you've played so many games that, if you actually did beat it, you've moved up!

At $50 buyin and above, Stars is the only place to be due to traffic. Everywhere else, SNGs fill up just sooo sllooowwwwllly. Plus, I still have reload b0nuses waiting for me at Stars...

Occasionally. I have two home games that I go to. One is quite irregular with a group of my university friends but only happens once every couple of months. The other is a regular weekly game (funny you ask, players are mostly Israelis!) that I only get to play in if there is room. Also, there are various "corporate" poker events that I play in (these are boring because most players play like they are playing BJ or something).

I only played once at the casino ($5/$10 limit) and because I suck at limit I donated my whole buyin pretty quickly.

I SUCK at it. The only times I played limit I dropped my entire buyin within a few minutes (once online and once at the casino). The reason I have limit books are a) HEPFAP is the book that all beginners buy but never understand what it says and b) I bought Small Stakes Hold'em for like $4 from eBay.

What kinds of leaks did you find?

I'd need to go back and look at the HHs, but playing marginal hands from OOP, bluffing against calling stations, not adapting my shoving range for the (loose!) calling range of $6.50 players and not being aggressive enough with strong hands probably sums it up.

It's not easy. Regular HH review and posting hands/tourneys is the best way to determine whether leaks have crept into your game. Always sitting down with the intention of playing your A game is the other.

Personally I think I have been (and still am) too conservative. I waited for 50 buyins to move to the $16s and $27s and despite having >60 buyins for the $60s I'm still hesitant to move up permanently. The 9 OOTM streak that I hit as soon as I moved up probably has something to do with it! I believe that being over conservative has held back my skills development as a SNG player.

Dude, seriously - MTTs need to come into your skillset. With your discipline and ICM knowledge you would pwn the $10 level without a doubt.

If the reason you play poker is for a challenge (you've said points in the past if I remember correctly) then why are you a Bankroll nit?

50-60 buyins isnt that big of a nit for the higher buyin sngs. I like to have 100 buyins for a certain level when i play them...

Yeah I know I have to learn to play MTTs. I guess the issue is time - it's not always easy to find 3+ hours in a row to play a big MTT. Plus I suck at the mid game but I guess practice will improve that.

Pride I guess. I started out with a $20 loan from a friend, have never had to reload (apart from to take advantage of reload b0nuses) and have never cashed out any of my profits. Whilst I could reload relatively easily if I had to, it would kill me to have to do it. I do know it is probably holding me back so I do need to get over it.

Yeah, the time issue is the problem for me too. But then I'm 80% a cash game player so I don't feel I'm missing a trick with regard to my skills - I play MTTs for fun when I have a spare evening (or when I enter a $55 MTT cos I think there'll be a big overlay, which there isn't, and then I bust out after 20 minutes, like last night). One day I'll win one - and make $300 or something lame - but I can't imagine it'll ever be my bread and butter.

Do you really not feel you could at least 2 table without losing a significant amount of your edge? I have to say I was genuinely surprised when you said you'd only made $xk profit - I'd easily expected it to be in five figures.

This might sound weird, but for me a lot of the satisfaction of playing SNGs is aiming for the perfect game where I make absolutely correct push/call/fold decisions. I can't do this if I'm playing more than one table. I do know this has probably cost me money but whatever...

Plus I tend to have a lot of distractions when I'm playing and I play on a laptop with a 15" screen which doesn't lend itself to multitabling.

During summer, average high temperature in Sydney is like mid to high 20s (Celsius), you might get a few (less than 10-15) days which are like 35 or above. Minimum temperature in winter is probably like 5 Celsius increasing to about 15 during the day.

Not sure about the AUD/EUR exchange rate these days but at a fancy pub in the city it's probably like US$6, at a more regular pub it's probably US$3-4.

cool, i heard the cost of living is higher in syndey than in other highly populated areas,true?? Whats the breakdown of nationalities in sydney, someone mentioned Perth is mostly full of english people, that sound right? BTW not racist but it was mentioned to me by an english woman.

I don't have any commitment issues! My gf and I have been together for 11 years, effectively we're married (live with somebody for 2 years in Australia and you're as good as married) but just can't be bothered with all the fuss and expense of a wedding. We're not religious and our parents don't care if we get married or not, so why spend $50K+++ on getting married then?

First and foremost, FTR. There's no way I would have learned what I have without this site, it's been terrific. Second, a friend of mine who comes from a famous Australian poker playing family who staked me initially and showed me how to play. He's no good at SNGs but he's won a lot of money in live and online MTTs, and to have had him demonstrate the basic stuff like board reading, aggression, playing position, etc. was invaluable.

Good question. There's only so far I can go in SNGs and once I move up to the $60s permanently I think I'll just stay at that level since I doubt there is an edge any higher. I'd like to continue to learn to play cash and MTTs, so that's probably where I'll spend a bit more time in the future but at least at the level I'm playing, it's just so tempting to take the $27 donkeys' money...
