Read on Villain is experienced, but this looks like a steal because most players raise to around 3500 or so with blinds this big.

I was pretty sure I was racing with low pp or ahead of the faces, maybe even dominating. I need chips to play the final table but it is better to fold to wait for better spot? Results later...

I use the 10bb rule for short stacks. In this case, you had less than 15000 in chips, as does villain. In this type of tournament, it would make you a short stack. When I have less than the 10x bb in a tournament, I'm looking for two cards to gamble all in pre-flop with.

Here I'm definitly calling. He has less chips than you and is even more desperate = wider range of hands. I am just fin with a low pp against my AQ because you are not dominated by any means.

But, my other question is, do I risk taking this race or should i be the one shoving rather than calling so these 61/39 races don't happen? I know I am ahead but still....

20 were paid in the 3k tourney, I am about 7th with 10k (blinds 500/1000)...chip leader has about 20k. We were hovering around 15 ppl left, pay goes up when FT of 10. I open push 44 from MP for 10k...guy calls with Aces and I get the four on the flop. He was mad and complaining because I had enough chips to get to the FT and the push was just stupid. I told him I had 10xbb, didn't want to see a flop, and needed chips if I wanted to be in a position to win. He called me a lucky bs, although I stated I know it's frustrating and I got lucky blah blah blah. In this tourney, when the FT starts only one or two ppl have more than 10xbb. Raises are usually min raises and those are good enough to take it down. Should I still be open shoving? I am really beginning to hate the site because it always seems like the short stacks pick up the greatest hands like 3 times in a row and get a normal stack again, and that's why the bubble takes forever. It's like you almost have to suckout to win.

making a small raise with 10bbs and a pocket pair is retarded because you cant fold to a raise, so go with whatever is going to give you max fold equity. you can do it with aces to encourage action, but any intelligent person(the people you describe don't sound very intelligent) will pick up on it. if everyone else is min raising and you're shoving you're playing better than them. don't argue with them either, let them think you're a fish and they're better than you.

i call with AQ btw. some people who talk about ICM might say it's bad though, idk.

Have you ever heard of how rasing ranges are wider than ranges vs. the raiser? If you were to have been folded to in this situation, you would not want a call because callers are probably 50% or better against you. Same with this guy, he doesn't want a call (unless big pp). The thing is, you HAVE to gamble it up for a coinflip eventually. AQ is the hand to do it with.

I'm going to ignore the bolded section, because that's just bullshit that professionals love to hear from the fish.

Regarding the low stack sizes for the final table - yes, open with shoves. Everybody knows that aggressive poker is winning poker, but you can't be aggressive and successful playing small ball poker at these stack sizes. So play aggressive big bet poker.

I wouldn't start to raise to 2-3xbb untill you had 20xbb or so.
