OPERATION: Beat 200NL

The goal is simply to make money playing 200NL (6max) by the end of the year. If I can increase by bankroll (now at $8995.23) to around 12-15k while making withdrawals I'll be happy and consider my goal achieved. My long-term goal for poker is to be able to make 30k-40k a year playing part-time.

I want to make this thread to track my progress, post some interesting hands and anything else I'd like to add (tournament results for example).

I've played 200NL for two weeks now and overall I'm happy with the results so far.

My first two weeks would have ended up a lot better if it wasn't for the DISASTER session I ended the week with yesterday. All that in about 40 minutes, I was getting KILLED. I had to end the session short as I felt I was losing my cool at the end.

I played a little FR last week just cause I have not played that in months and just felt like playing it a bit. Played two sessions, session one went great, the play was terrible and people were just paying me off. Session two, as you can see above was just a nightmare. So I want to forget about yesterday and start week three fresh. I'll try to update this thread everyday I play and see how long I keep up with this. I might keep up with this for the rest of the year or let the thread die in couple weeks. Who knows?

I played Monday and today but I'm scared to look at my PT or my balances because Monday seemed as bad as Sunday. Today seems a little better, probably up a buy-in.

I'm guessing I played 3000-4000 hands and I'm down 5-6 buy-ins on the week.

Playing at Party and Everest can be very rewarding when things are going good and very frustrating when they are going bad.

For someone that runs 16/11/3.5 I don't even think I'm that nitty. Maybe because I'm still fairly new to playing 8 tables and it feels like I'm always in the action and always doing something.

One interesting thing I noticed while looking through my PT stats from last weeks was this:

Yesterday and today did not go well. I'm still scared to look at my PT. I'll survey the damage at the end of the week.

I had to look at Tuesday (my only good day this week) to make me feel better. It was better than I thought.

The amount of fish today I found was incredible. I'll find some mind boggling hands later and post them. It wasn't only the fish that made this day good. I'd say I played pretty well, made some nice bluffs, some good calls and some great folds, like this one:

I think you should take some shots at 400NL. I started 200NL blog with a goal of moving to 400 and I just took a shot at 400 and 600 for fun, hit a heater and increased my roll pretty welll that I am rolled for 400nl now (you already are!). You have a decent winrate, you can probably increase your winnings by 75% or better moving to 400nl. There are more tough good regs, so table selection is more important but I think you can handle it. Your BR definitely can.

Hand 2 if you really have a read, that's a dope hand. I don't have the balls for stuff like this though, I never make moves like that with air.

Hand 3 seems pointless unless you show... but I think this is just spew

Pre-flop I saw him mini-raise some marginal hand before so I figured it was just his lame attempt to steal my blinds so that's why I re-raised him pre-flop. Now after the flop I just knew he was gonna check/mini-raise me with that board trying to represent the K. I instapushed. Just going with my gut that hand.

I usually pick my spots here pretty well. UTG has been aggressive and had raised UTG quite a bit. Also, I my image at that table was very nitty, I keep my numbers on the table with my HUD to see how the others might be viewing me so I thought it was a good time for a move.
Didn't work, they both came along. So I just gave up on the flop but no one made a move on the pot so I just took a stab at it on the turn. I showed too.

I guess there are still people throwing around money like nothing at this level too. I should have made it $50 but it doesn't really matter, if he's calling $40 with rags he'd call $50.
I played 3 400NL tables and it went fine other than that hand and two hands where I made stupid calls. But I was only down $116.14 at these tables despite my poor judgement. As for the rest of my day, (my 200NL tables) I'd say I played very poorly for some reason. I was playing too passive. I was doing too much calling when I should have been folding or raising or leading in the first place.

Today did not go well either but I played better. Got in pre-flop with AA vs. KK to get rivered by a K and had a nasty set-over-set deep stacked at one table. But at least I wasn't playing like a fish today (for the most part.)

Looks like last week, I'm off to a terrible start.

I see some tables I run with numbers like that and others I'm 24/24.
Today so far has been terrible, I really caught fuck all and when I tried to make plays I met nothing but resistance.
I'm heading back on in 20 minutes for another session, hopefully things go better.

Today was an up and down day. Session one was one of the most frustrating I 've even had, I would find some 70/14 guy just throwing money around and he's catching hands on me and sucking out. These guys were driving me nuts. And every time I missed a hand it seemed like the villain would know, then I flop quads in a multi-way pot and get nothing. Just one of those sessions.
Then next session I seem to get everything to hold up and get my big hands paid off. It went great, I made back my losses back on the day and some. Only day this week that ended up well. But I still have A LOT to go just to get back to even on the week.

Loose up your preflop play :D:D Especially in late position. Seems like that is where you are too tight. I got around 35% Att. to steal blinds. VP$IP 21%, PFR 17%. I think you lose a lote of value being so tight in position.

I want to see that up to 25% at least. My blind stealing seems to be going well, I just should be doing more of it. I'm happy with my blind defense too.

I feel sometimes at these tables I just don't attempt enough cause I have some guy on my left running 65/10 and I just don't feel I can get him to fold and it's tough to put those guys on hands.

Another thing, I'm going to try to cold call raises less with suited connectors. I seem to do that quite a bit.

Finally, I'm going to continue playing this next month at Party and iPoker and see how it goes after another 35k-40k hands because right now I'm showing a very nice winrate at Party and a very bad one at iPoker. I don't know why that's the case because I can find a lot of bad players at iPoker.
So maybe I'll take my game to Party full-time if this trend continues.

I dont never hasitate to make my preflopsteals. I think it's great that they call with theyre crappy hands OOP cause it's easy turning it to EV+ against 'em. I make my standard CB and if they then have hard to fold any pair it's even more great. Maybe I make a two-barrel sometimes and maybe I just check it down. If they get theyre bad hands to showdown and win the pot they will definately pay me off later when I actually got a hand. And then I will make a big bet at every street making them to pay maybe 60bb's for a showdown instead of 15bb's like last time. They are so stupid that they think that I got a even worse hand those times. :)

Little update:

Played two sessions yesterday. Down 1 buy-in.
Played two sessions today. Up 6 buy-ins.
So I'm up about $300 on the week right now.

I'm keeping up with my goal of increasing my blind stealing attempts, still keeping it over 30%. And think I'm calling raises less too which is the other thing I wanted to do, gotta check that on my PT.

I have also worked hard to increase my Att.to steal blinds percentage and it worked really well against regulars on Party and on Crypto (sometimes). However, keeping the same steal percentage on Ongame got me into lots of troubles. I checked my PT stats and on most sites other than Ongame my percentage is between 27-35% but on Ongame its below 25%.

Just to say also that on Party I play 22/19 and Ongame I'm 19/12. I think this is just adjustment to the more loose games.

Its because of the time I'm playing. I am in the GMT+12 timezone when its morning in Europe which means well rested people who obviously play Poker instead of working. When I play the 100nl 6-max games on party the table avg VPIP is almost always below 30%. Nits!!

Finished up some bonuses today, cleared the $100 Party reload and finished my Noble Poker $250 deposit bonus. Also, I reached Party Poker's "Ace" level VIP. I have about 6 weeks to see if I can reach "Deuce" level.

I'll start off with the bad because there is more of that. This is two big losing weeks now, I'm down 12 buy-ins over 20k hands in the past two weeks. I'm losing a bit at Party Poker but I'm getting MURDERED at iPoker. I have to get outta this, the biggest problem I can control is I think I'm playing poorly against the iPoker fish. I just have to make better decisions.
The good? Well, this week I as you can see I bumped up the frequency of my blind stealing, I got it to 30% and I'm happy with that. I think I'm getting more aggressive too, I got my VP$IP and PFR% closer together. I'm also happy with my postflop aggression.
Also, hopefully I'm just seeing some bad variance. I got that PokerEV program and unless I'm reading this wrong it looks like I'm unlucky when I 'm all-in:

So I moved to Prima (Microgaming) to take advantage of a nice 2k bonus for Canadians. I like the site and software. I just wish they had resizable tables because their tables are huge. The big adjustment I had to make was to adapt to the speed. It's the fastest software I've played on and I can't 8 table there, every table seems to be 120+ hands an hour. I can handle 6 at a time.

So I had one session yesterday and it was a BE session. Nothing special.

Today was different.
In session 1, my rough streak continued on. If that PokerEV software supported Prima I'd be able to show an uglier all-in luck graph.
My KK lost to AK pre-flop all-in for stacks. Twice I ended up all-in with big draws (12+ outs) vs. one pair and lost.
Also had a set-over-set
a nut flush on turn and get rivered by a boat
and got stacked in a 3 bet pot with AK on a AQ6 board

All that and I only was down 1.5 buy-ins, I think I played well today.

Session 2 was a little less eventful, thing went better. My big hands held and I even sucked out once. :lol:

I'm taking the day off and just going over some things.

First I just cleaned up and organized my PT databases.
Then I when over my database since July 30 (37k hands) where I've lost 21 buy-ins. Looking over it, things don't seem that bad. I'm very happy to see I actually made money defending my blinds, also I made money stealing blinds. My pairs and suited-connectors are making money overall. I'm losing with 22, 66, 77 & JJ. The times I'm cold-calling with pairs and suited-connectors I'm winning also.
I'm a loser with unsuited connectors and in unraised multi-way pots. I'll look more into that tomorrow morning I think.
I'm playing 17.5/13.5/3.3 over this stretch and 4.5/2.2/2 on the flop/turn/river.

Then I was playing around with the PokerEV software. Prima and Everest aren't supported so it doesn't get the whole picture but I still have 28k hands in there.
I need to play +EV hands in pots 5-20BB. So I need to play better there it seems.
As for the graphs, my all-in luck graph is ugly, my expected winning are $2.5k higher than my actually winnings. My game analysis graph is very ugly, my Sklansky bucks are up over $6k and my other line is obviously a hell of a lot lower.
I'm not all that familiar with that software so I doubt I'm getting all that I could out of it.

I also read Jager's entire operation thread to see the advice he was getting and how he was trying to improve his play.

So I'm done with the analysis today and I'll just leave my computer on for the rest of the day to datamine Party & Prima. I'll get back to work tomorrow and hopefully have a good day.

JJ hand -- you have to re-raise the flop here to $70. That bet is a sign of extreme strength or weakness. You want to define the hand here by having him fold (goot), re-raise you (sad, but goot cuz we know we have to fold, yes we fold...wtf are we beating) or if you are called, proceed with caution, maybe even give up. JJ is a tough hand, you are RARELY going to win an all in pot with it unless someone is on a draw.

also, stop posting bad beats. Dwelling on that stuff isnt good for anything. Post some ownage hands or big $$ wins instead. Positive motivation is where it's at.

I realized that after that hand. But the funny thing is, if I did check and was facing a shove on the river when a 7 or 4 fell I would have folded when my pair would have been good. So it kinda gave me 6 more outs.

I can't remember my thought process that hand but what you said sounds good. What would you do if he potted it instead? If he bets $65 do you shove or fold? Cause any flop raise on a bigger bet makes you really committed.

I hear ya, I've posted a few like the 86s where I fired every street with air and stupid/funny hands with Party fish spewing (like the guy stacking off with 3 high and no draws). I'll try to mix it up more.

I'm a conservative player so I probably dump the jacks if potted. In a 4 bet pot if someone bets pot on flop without AKQ out there at all, its normally an overpair defense. If he pots, we only beat a bluff and if we call the pot size bet we might as well re-raise AI right then instead of calling, but I really don't want to do that. Playing AI pots with marginal hands isn't the ticket. Quit the marginal situations 1 or 2 streets early, it saves a LOT of money. For me most of my nights come down to critical play in 5-10 pots. The nights I save extra bets in 3/4 bet pots and proceed with the best hand I make far more.

I really think the #1 leak people have is playing further too loosely without the goods in big pots.

Our stats look quite similar, except that i play a lot more aggressively on the turn. One suggestion i have is to start double barrelling scary turn cards when you are the PFR and your c-bet with air gets called.

Other than that i think you are mostly just running bad. Moving down until you start winning more of those 60/40's is a good idea.

are you mostly just losing a lot of medium pots or something? At 200nl theres enough aggressive play that you should be stacking off and stacking ppl quit a bit

It's only 3 days and 5.5k hands. I had two 150BB loses today (top two vs. top set in 3bet pot & KK vs a donk with AA).
I lost 100BB stacks 6 times in those 3 days and won 5. I was kinda surprised too that that hand was my biggest loss.

I tried to look at that PokerEV software to see if I was fucking up a lot of medium pots. Looks like I'm doing okay in pots 5-30BB. I don't see anything that really stands out. I'm going to really sit down with that program for a while and go through all the filters and every situation.

I double barrel when I think it's a good spot or I can get away with it but I probably don't do it enough. Thanks for the advice.
