Anyone who's read my various other operations will know that 2007 has been, more or less, one big suckfest for my poker.

My attempts to play $200NL failed horribly. My $100NL game was never quite solid enough and I was moving up and down.

After taking time off short-handed NL to play more donkaments I felt like getting back to it; I am playing $50NL 6-max on crypto, i-poker and Party.

I played well to start with and then it fell apart. Even when I'm playing well I'm ending up down. Of course there's some bad luck (have quality sklansky bucks graphs to prove it) and some bad plays; but I've had good sessions go south and it's just got too much.

This is the third or fourth time I've dropped down to 50NL but it's the firsttime it's kicked my butt.
I'm now down over 9BI for the month; today I lost 2BI, got them back and then lost them again.

It's just depressing. I'm now a career loser at 50NL over 40k hands.

So the plan is simple: play 50NL until the end of the month; earn as much rb + bonus as I can. Improve play as much as I can.

If my ptbb/100 is >=0 I can continue to play; if I'm down come 1st September then I quit ring for good. It's just not worth it.

The only one that I don't really like is the last one... you're running really really bad.

dude, stick with it... youre running really bad. i am (maybe) coming out of a 12BI swing of my own. that was 12 BIs in one week!! mostly stuff like you are showing.

my guess: you seem to be overplaying AK/AJ. youre not letting AJ go to aggression when you whiff, and your too eager to go to stacks w/ AK.

but, you are also "matching up" poorly, and thats not entirely your fault. AK v KK, AK against TTT, AJ v AK when you both hit 2pr. those just suck...for you.

hands 3 and 4 really bite the big one. runner-runner bail outs really tend to tilt me.

1. Thats a pretty small 3bet PF, make it bigger. Flop is standard, just hope he has AK or a FD

2. Cold calling a 4bet with AK is not good. With this hand we want to see all 5 card, if we just call then we are going to almost always be facing a shove on the flop. We arent going to be able to really fold postflop so just get it in PF. As played you obviously arent folding. Also, with reads this could easily be a fold PF

3. I dont really know what I do here because it really depends on what sort of hands we would expect him to play this way and what we would expect him to call

4. Again, this is a tiny 3bet. I would just shove this flop.

5. Id need a read that the SB is very aggressive and not much of a thinking player. We raise in EP and then are 3bet from the blinds, this just screams strength and against an unknown a fold isnt bad at all here. But if Im continuing, it is by shoving.

6. I think this is fine as well.

7. Again, simply cold calling a 4bet is bad with almost all hands and especially with ones like this. Just shove PF if you think you are ahead of his range.

8. This is a pretty awkward spot. Your play has merit and so does simply folding the flop, you just need some kind of idea about how your opponent plays.


Looking at your stats you are playing too much out of the blinds and not enough in LP and I also think that your VPIP is much too high in comparison to your PFR.

You could have been getting good cards, running hot in non AI pots, etc. Im not saying you arent running poorly, but just dont let that be an excuse to keep you from improving. Post hands where you won, post hands where you didnt lose to a suckout, etc.

Tighten up. Way up. Especially early. My SB stat is like 15/10

Secondly, I don't think the big pots are the problem. Yea you ran bad on a few. I found when I started analyzing and watching what I did in the 40BB and under pots my game improved. You know the ones. Limper, you raise, caller and limper calls. Flop, limper checks, you c-bet, caller calls, one fold. Turn, limper makes big raise, you fold.

Hundreds of these hands, costing me 10BB, 15BB were causing the bleeding. Check PT after every session. Do you have an equal number of big hands in green and red? Look to the middle more often.

Losing 8 buyins at 50nl in 2k hands is not variance/running bad.

You're playing too loose for your level which is completely unecessary to be a solid winning player. Tighten up, reduce variance in general, play more tables, earn more bonus/rb, and get back up to 100nl.

You need to make your 3-bets a little more hetero-sexual.

You can felt AK as long as you know villain to be donkish, i.e. will stack off with less than TPTK. I win big pots all day long at SH $50nl felting TPTK...I won't fold it unless I am up against a passive mouse showing aggression or against a known solid player. Sorry to hear about your downswing man...that sux. Your stats are already pretty ideal for SH play so I wouldn't recommend tightening up. I consider myself a nit and I am 23/11 after 50k hands of $50nl sh. 20-25% VP$IP and 10-15% PFR is ideal IMO.

Okay. So no I'm going to look like such a drama queen.

My luckbox has been in overdrive the last few days (that's not to say I've not been stacked on the occasional 2-outer (twice today with AA for stacks, down with AA and KK today).

But overall I finished a healthy +$255 today over 1.5k hands.

Update:
Now on -$272 off 10.5k hands
Now down $424 over the last 3k hands.

As usual it's a combination of idiotic plays and variance.
Sure it sucks right now, set under sets twice, that set v flush, and a couple of overpairs v higher overpairs and a couple of busted PPs versus lower pairs.

I've $350 this month on crypto. Perhaps that's a sign in itself.
Once I get the last of this $50 bonus I think I'll set myself to iPoker for the rest of the month... 9 days to go, 5-6 BI required... looks a bit bleak again.

Okay, this is going to be a long detailed post-mortem post. There will be no cliff notes, sorry.

It might seem like this thread is just a pointless "Oh no, I suck" thread.
But really it was an attempt to try something I thought I was good at $50NL. But despite a lot of work it seems that results seem to be more down to lucky profits than my edge and sucky mistakes.

Constantly losing is depressing and I was hoping to pick up enough affirmation this month to keep me going. But right now I'm 3 BI down over the month and if I can't beat THESE games what does that say?

I'm going to go through table by table here and see how it went, maybe some problems will arise. 26 sessions for almost 1k hands.

First stop, Party (8-tabling).
session 1: Down $22. Three pots I lost, two raised pots, missed flop, they played back at my c-bet. Two barrels on another hand and again didn't hit.
No real drama.

Session 2: Up $17. Nothing to note.
Session 3: Down $12. One PP forced to fold on K-river to donk bet.
Session 4: Down $5
Session 5: Up $7
Session 6: Down $25. A few PPs had to lay down to aggression on dangerous flops.
Session 7: Up $8
Session 8: Down $44
Lost a $20 2-barrelling a low board before getting playd back at.
Won a $17 with TPTK.

First big hand:
Raise JTs on the button, two callers. Flop 968, two clubs for FD+OESD.
I bet low $3.50 into $10 and get called.
Turn 7, I bet $9.50 into $17 and get check-raised all-in by 78s.
River 8 for his boat and I suffer a bad beat.


After that session I was down a little almost entirely because of that bad beat. The rest seems like standard problems of missing flops and having to give up on pots before it gets out of hand.
I am obviously a little too focused on the results, but I spotted when things were going wrong for me and walked away.

Next session on iPoker.
Session 9: +$80. Stack a guy twice AA v KK and him calling down my nut-flush.
Session 10: -$6
Session 11: +$3
Session 12: +$20. Taking down standard pots
Session 13: -$8
Session 14: +$20 more standard plays

Looking good after this run. Up for the day. Feeling confident. Try for one more session.

Last iPoker session
Session 15: -$31
Lost two $15 pots. First all-in AJ v A4 (shortstack). River 4. Meh.
Other KT hits a K-flop, villain with 88 turns a set. Small pot because of all-club flop.

Session 16: -$6
Session 17: -$62
-$50 when I pushed AK pre-flop into KK (posted about it in SHNL and most seem to think the play wasn't too out of line).
Session 18: +7
Session 19: -$14
Forced to give up with 99 after 3-bet and c-bet after turn A and villain plays back.

Session 20: -$53
First really bad hand:
AKs, raise and called OOP.
Flop 764 rainbow.
I bet $4, raised to $10 and call.
Turn is a K and I call two big bets on turn and river. Villain had 44 and I think I could have played better against obvious strength (raised flop, bet two streets v TPTK...)

Session 21: -$12
Session 22: -$0.80
Session 23: +$80 TPTK push v OESD and held up + KK overpair taking down raised pot.
Session 24: -$2
Session 25: -$6
Session 26: -$13

After the AK push I felt awkward; recovered with teh stacking in session 23. Finally penultimate hand of the session my TPTK runs into a flopped set and that puts me well down for the day (was about -$15 before that).

Overall I played almost 1k hands and lost $67
Seem to be even over the smaller pots, maybe a little ahead.

Big pots:
+3 stacks.
-3 stacks (4-outer, AK v KK, TPTK v set).

Obviously if I hadn't lost the 4-outer I'd be up $60 today, so that's something to take heart from.
I had a few beats going in with the best hand v shortstacks.

My AK play in that one stacking is questionable, but again, in the SHNL forum it wasn't overly criticized.
My play of TPTK v set (got raised on flop, strong later-street betting) maybe should have got me off that hand.

So overall okay. Obviously results-focus is hard to drop and is probably affecting me negatively. Too many leaks still to fix.

first of all, fold to the flop raise. but if your going to "float" there, calling down when you spike TPTK on the turn isnt bad because villains are doing this with alot of 88-JJ type hands, so dont beat yourself up too much.

this is cool when villain finally gets fed up and pushed over you, but what about every other time? The donk bets here are bad because (i hope) you are never doing this with any other hands. just bet 1/2 pot on the flop and turn, or even pot the flop and 3/4 pot the turn. Maybe this hand doesnt turn out as profitable as it does here, but over the long run i think you'll make more money winning 10 small/med. pots than 1 big one.

I think you've a very good point. To be fair I was surprised that he didn't come over the top sooner. I put out a min-bet into the small pot and got 1 caller. I was sure he'd raise if I put in a min-bet again, so when he didn't I was thinking I'd got the guy wrong. Then the river came and he spazzed out as per my plan :D

I do have to be careful because it justifies a rather dubious tactic and I've had a lot more success since I've started betting my monsters against these guys.

Which I think are better, or at least more helpful for me where I am post-flop.

Since the op started I'm running at 4bb/100 over 11k hands. Ignore Crypto and it's more like 7bb/100 over 10k.

However I'm still concerned that I've got some big leaks. My SD/100 is still 40BB (down from earlier, but still high) which means the op graph looks like a rollercoaster:

So I guess I'm keeping on going at 6-max NL. I'll keep on iPoker while I've got bonuses to clear (equivalent of 33% RB) and the games continue to be so soft.
But I really need to work out what I'm doing with some of these pots because until I hit a smoother stride I'm going to have these ups and downs and it's going to make me want to give up.

Last time I moved down to $50NL it eventually steadied me and laid the foundation for moving up to eventually $200NL before my crash. So let's hope this time I'll make it more sustainable.

so, does anosmic in fact have no sense of smell? i never really considered this, but a contractor i worked with last years wife had no sense of smell. That would really fuck with your taste too.

It could explain a few things. For one, he wouldn't be able to smell if there are fish at the table. Positive flipside of this is that he's able to tolerate his wife (oh noes I didnt just go there!!)
