Operation: Summer Is Here. Weeeee!

So I am finally done with my first year of college and I plan on playing alot of poker this summer. First some background. I started playing poker with my friends a few years ago. I read HoH 1 & 2 each twice, and I read most of ToP. At the beginning of the school year I deposited $45 on Stars. Got that up to about $90 playing Sit N Goes. I than lost all but $25 of it. About 3 or 4 weeks ago I started playing again. But this time I only played 2nl. When I had $100 in my bankroll I started playing 5nl. My Goals are listed below, I will probably post graphs and hands as I go along.

Goals (to be done before Aug. 16th)

[x] 15K hands in May.
[ ] 50K hands this summer.
[x] Get roll up to $250 for 10nl.
[ ] Get roll up to $750 for 25nl.

Today went pretty good I feel. Played 1350 hands at 5nl. I ran at 21.8/18.3/4.8 weee. To aggressive? I don't really know I have been trying to be more aggressive, but this seem almost maniacal. Sometimes my aggression does get me into trouble which I do have to watch out for. Over all stats in 5nl are 20.8/16/3.9 over 3.7k hands at +12.6BB/100. I have an overall flop aggression factor of 12. This is because it seems like everyone folds to my flop continuation bet, if they don't I slow way down unless I have something good. I think I make a good portion of my money in hands I don't show down. Here are some of my hands from today. Please post your thoughts on them, and I know I screwed up on some :D.

hand 1:
Two options obviously; call, raise. both are fine, but if you are going to raise from the SB after a couple limpers, make it more than the normal 4x +1 for each limper. I'd make it more like .40 or so, in trying to get it heads up. good bet on the flop as played though, as well as checks on turn and river.

hand 2:
I may sound like a nit, but I am folding to the turn check raise. I'm sure you can think of some reasons why. If not, they include:
Expect a push on river by villain, so in essence, this is not a call of only .80, but also a call with the intention of calling a substantial bet on the river.
Also, I don't see weaker hands taking this line attempting to value bet in this situation, ergo, this is either a bluff or a stronger hand. I am leaning towards a strong hand because bluffs seldom take the line of check call check min raise.

Because I think the min check raise is either a bluff or a stronger hand, I think that folding and raising are each better options than calling. You'll find that FTR generally agrees that in most aggressive villain situations that it is better to either fold or raise than to call.

This is a good point that I haven't really thought about. I will keep this in mind playing later hands. I have started to learn to fold to these kinds of bets, but sometimes I don't listen to my gut which is bad. It seems like if a reraise or a bet or something doesn't make any sense than I just fold. This seems to keep me out of weird flopped two pairs or flopped trips alot of the time. On the first hand your probably right on raising m0re preflop from the SB. Thanks for the input. I'll be sure to post more hands after my next session.

I just got out of $5NL not too long ago, with nearly the same stats as you! They folded to C-Bets a LOT more than at $10NL. Odd.

Just as an aside, if you are looking for ADVICE on a hand, then it is best not to initially include results. If you just want to share for comments, then this is fine!

#1. PF looks good to me. 4BB +1 for each limper is a good standard imo. Your Flop C-Bet is too low though. At this point of the hand you are OOP against 2-people, your objective is Bet/fold, so put out a closer to pot size bet out there to take it down. If you get a caller, then it's auto check/fold time (unless you spike your 8!!)

#2. Depending on your villian, TPTK is very often the nuts at $5NL. however, the check/call, check/min-raise line looks VERY scary here. Followed by the river push, it should be at the least, an easy river fold. For me on the turn though --> Fold>Raise>Call. I don't like to call unless I have a strong hand, and believe that villian will be more aggressive if I play possum. Considering how wet that board is, villian could have a flushdraw there, but it's kinda unlikely. Usually they would Check/Push with the flushdraw here... He's slowplaying, and $5NL hooligans LOVE to slowplay...

Min-raises at many of the lower levels (At least up to $25NL from my experience) by non-drooling villians is usually an indicator of a strong hand. This is NOT ALWAYS true, just generally.

I see thanks for the input. I knew I messed up that last hand, you're right I really should have folded the river, it should have been an easy lay down.

The past couple of days have been a downer. I've only played 350ish hands and am down $7.89. Here are some of the hands. I believe these are coolers, but if anyone has better way to play them than please tell me.

1. Standard, looks good, but OUCH... no way could you put him on that...
2. Like the flop aggression, but just CALL the min-raise on the river, there are a TON of hands that beat your 1-card straight here... that raise is spew.
3. Well played. Villian is, as you said, an idiot. They play drunk, blind, and high, as well as who knows how many other ways. Don't worry about it, most of the time, you'll be taking their stack. Just be happy he didn't value-bet the river!

Chin-up man, 350 hands is not even worth stressing over. If at 35,000 hands you're still not winning, then maybe we got something to worry bout!

I don't like the threebet on the river of hand 2, everything else is fine.

As Chris says, 350 hands is absolutely nothing, just keep focused and don't let it negatively affect your play. You seem to have a good attitude, keep it up :)

#1 bet closer to pot on turn

#2 c/f flop, c/c or b/c river as played, as badgers said, b/3b is probably spew

#3 Again, bet more on turn and b/f river. K-high/K7 are just a small part of his range once he calls turn.

So the general consensus is that I seem to be playing fine, but I need to bet more when I am ahead. I need to remember this.

Hand 2. You raise A8s UTG!? That might be a little bit on the loose side. However, you should bet the turn almost always to charge players who are drawing.

Hand 1 is standard. I had a guy do this to me w/ KQs the other day.

Hand 2, just fold that UTG...even at 6-max that is a fold just about always. But as played, yeah, you have to be that turn as a lot of the time it's a FD or even a worse ace. Then you can check the river and see it for free or cheap (although here that river sucks, oh well :( ).

Thanks for the comments. I have begun playing a bit tighter and fold A8 UTG now. After being on a 2300 hand break even stretch I have been on a bit of a heater. Good play mixed with some reads and nice cards have helped. I'm up more than $47 in the past 2 days over 1200 hands of 5nl. I might post interesting hands tomorrow, but right now I'm gonna go to sleep. Hopefully I'll be playing 10nl by mid June.

Today was horrible. Lost just over $13 after 430 hands of 5nl. The good thing is the three days before today were great. Decided to quit early and post some hands because I was getting mad. I think I played decent, a couple hands were bad and I know it so I won't post them. Comments on these hands really do help and are greatly appreciated.

I actually put this guy on a busted flush draw. Possibly something like KJs. When the river hit I actually said "good thing that wasn't a spade." There was nothing more I could do here was there? I didn't put him on one but how often is this a set? BTW vilain ran 46/3.5/.4 over 56.

Thanks for the advice. I just realized that I never put in any pot sized bets, which might be a leak. What are the best times to put in a pot size bet? It seems that most of the time buy the turn the pot is rather large if the villain calls my continuation bet and preflop raise. It also seems that a turn bet of about half the pot would deny them odds to draw to a flush or straight. Thanks again for the advice. It seems I played these decent although I need to remember to charge people for drawing.

I feel pretty good about today. Only played about 400 hands but I made just over $16.50. I'm going to post my May graph and stats, any feedback would be great.

Down $8.63 in June so far. The ridiculous coolers and suckouts are hilarious (KK < AKs all-in preflop, AA < JTo all-in preflop). Moreover I can't seem to extract value from my good hands and my cbets keep getting called. All in all the month has not gotten off to a good start at all. Yes, definitely bet that turn. You're gonna be up against FDs and like AQ so much at this level. It also makes the river decision much easier.

oooh yeah, didn't even see that. badgers is right...tighten up in early positions. it's okay to fold stuff like AJo, KJo, QJs, and other so-so hands from here (perhaps even baby pairs also). the reason being is that there's still many to act after you, and you'll be oop with a hand that really needs to hit the flop hard for to be able to continue with confidence.

I am starting to tighten up under the gun. Since you mentioned this I've played 2k hands (small sample) and I'm 11.6/11.6 UTG and 12.4/12.4 UTG+1, It's fold or raise for me here in these positions. It might still be too loose but I'm heading in the right direction.

June is an interesting month I am -$19.07 over 20 all-ins BUT PokerEV says i should be at -$1.04 so meh. I am running +4.7BB/100 in won without showdown, and I am liking that number. Overall I am still up $23.44 in June so far so I can't really complain there.

I am not going to post any hands, but I do have a few questions.

Question 1: I don't have PAHUD yet, but was thinking about getting it when I move to 10nl, does this sound like a good idea?

Question 2: What do you think I should have as a stop loss for 10nl (I am going to try 10nl when my bankroll gets to $250)? I'm thinking around $210 sounds like a good number to drop back down. As always your thoughts are appreciated.

Ran sorta crappy yesterday getting all-in on the flop and then getting two outed on the turn for a buy-in, but today was fantastic. I played 890 hands and ran 36.6ptBB/100 and made $32.61, which is the most I've ever made in one day. Basically I got all-in with the nut flush vs. two pair for a profit of $6.50 and all-in with the nut straight vs 2nd nut straight for $8.84. So almost half of my winnings came from two hands, both times I had the nuts and there is no better feeling than getting all-in with the nuts. No real hand histories my biggest losing hand was for $2.20 when I flopped top two vs a set of deuces. Tomorrow I am going to take a stab at 10nl, because I met my bankroll requirement of $250 and I feel I'm ready. I am wondering if there are any differences between 5nl and 10nl. The only real difference I would guess would be more people calling cbets than at 5nl. Which I cbet often (I have a 1.0ptBB/100 in pots without showdowns at 5nl) so I might have to pick better places to cbet. I'm gonna set a stop loss at 4 buy-ins, and I am still pondering whether I should get PAHU yet or not. I ran 19.5/14.7/3.5 over my 13k hand stay at 5nl so hopefully I can continue closing the gap between VP$IP and PFR and keep that aggression up.

Yeah, I've learned alot in my brief stint at 5nl. I no longer stack off with TPTK very often anymore. After I get home from work tonight I'll be trying 10nl for the first time. I'll be posting about my experience in a bit.

My first day at 10nl didn't go as well as it could have been, I got AA 8 times in 630 hands, but not one hand ever went past the flop and I only managed to win $2.80 with them. It was a very swingy day. I was down $10.40 within the first 80 hands and worked up to a high of +$7.95 only to finish the day down $6.80. I was playing pretty nitty also at 16.2/11.9/2.9, which I might have to step up and play a couple more hands. I've decided to post some of the days biggest winners and losers so here they are.

I was hopping to get all-in preflop with just the short stack. The guy who I played the flop with I actually had a note on and it read "open limped AK in MP." So I was suspecting him to be a bit nitty. Tried to push him out of the pot in the flop and the flop call really scared me. By the turn I figured I probably wasn't going to fold so I should go all-in while I still might have the best hand or give him another chance to fold.

My second day at 10nl went much better than the first. No real hands to report. I think I played pretty well, although I was a bit nitty running at 16.3/10.5/2.4 over the 1000ish hands I played yesterday. I did happen to have my 2nd or 3rd best day ever raking in $29.50 on the day which is good news. This means I would have to have a 6ish buy-in downswing for me to drop back down to 5nl which I hope doesn't happen. Heres the thing, I am almost 1/3 done with the operation, but I have played a bit less than 1/4 of my 50k hand goal. To reach my goal of $750 by Aug. 16th I'll need to run at around 10ptBB/100 in 10nl at my current number of hands per day pace. Or I could step up the number of hands to my goal pace and run somewhere around 6.3ptBB/100. I might try to do the later as I think it will be easier. Maybe I'll add a 5th table once I get some more hands in at 10nl.
