My lovely mother wants to go to Vegas with me in early December, and she's wondering whether we should stay at the Imperial or the Luxor. She tells me that the Imperial is 3 stars and the Luxor is 4 stars. The Luxor will cost us an additional $18/night each.
I've never been to Vegas before. Is it worth the extra $18/night to stay at Luxor?
Only been to Vegas once and haven't stayed at either but from what I've heard from others the Imperial is a more comfortable place to stay. I haven't heard really any good things about the Luxor as far as a hotel goes.
For what it's worth, the Imperial is smack in the middle of the strip which is always nice as I'm sure you wont be spending to much time in your room. Also happens to be much closer to some of the higher end joints like the Bellagio, Venetian and the Wynn if that matters. There's a bazzilion different things to do in Vegas other then sitting at the casinos so I suppose it depends on what you're looking for as well.
Another thing is the monorail stops right at the imperial which is nice if you aren't looking to walk that much(after a few days of walking the strip and getting no sleep you might be compelled to ride the rail :)
the luxor is the coolest looking casino.
are you going to any shows? maybe just pick whichever is closest to what you will be doing
if you stay at the IP, the Casino Royal is next door, and thats good for $1 beers.
I stayed at the Luxor and thought it was fine although people seem to hate on it, or maybe just on its poker room which is very small. Rooms were pretty nice and its connected to Mandalay Bay.
when you close your eyes they both look the same.....save your $ and spend it elsewhere,and walk over to the "light".
the luxor is nice, but it is off the strip somewhat. There is a free train that will take you 2 the luxor from the strip though so its not that bad. It is much nicer and cooler scenery, but the IP is dead in the middle of the strip.
it all depends on how much you will actually be in your room, imo.
i went a long time ago and stayed a couple nights at MGM and a couple at Riviera. no contest.
when i walked through Luxor and IP, i would pick Luxor. but, IP had a better location for where we ended up spending our time.
6 one way, half dozen the other.
however, TI's buffet was well worth it, and it's basically across the street from IP.

Imperial is not a top level hotel, but has to be as good as the Luxor and is more North on the strip, I'd go for it.

Go to some cheaper place that's close enough to walk to your favorite casinos and use that extra money that you saved on the room for what's really important. (Gambling, Entertainment, Food and Booze!)
I've only stayed at the IP.
It's cheap, good location.
You get two beds, a shower, and a tv - that's it. So if you plan on staying in your room a lot, pick the Luxor, if you just need a bed to sleep on, the IP is great.

Halv stayed at the IP in June. I saw his room, and well, all I can say is I recommend the Luxor. A/C was loud and didn't work properly. Bad smells, etc.
Location is perfect though.
The Imperial Palace is a shit hole IMO. Yes it's cheap, but for a few extra you could stay at the Flamingo which is next door.
If you were looking at the IP for its location, look into Ballys or Paris. They usually offer very good deals, have an even better location and it is on the train system. Paris has great restaurants and cafes, and its casino is very open so it tends to be less smoky.
I have stayed at both. Imperial Palace about 5 years ago, and Luxor 3 times b/n 2002-2005.
IP rooms are like a 1980's Holiday Inn. Not a bad place to lay your head or pass out, but not quite up to Vegas standards. Casino floor is fun and usually busy, but you are going to be dealing with a lower income group. Location is great if you want to spend time at Caesars, Venetian, Mirage, or other mid-strip major hotels. It is also a part of the Harrah's group if you want to get rated for your gambling, which provides plenty of gambling venues to visit on the strip.
Luxor is much nicer, but probably on the mid end of Vegas hotels. It probably compares favorably to NY,NY, MGM, Ballys, etc. I have never stayed at Bellagio, Venetian, Mandalay, or Wynn to compare high end. The gaming floor will have a good mix of income patrons, but you won't see the cut off jean shorts and sleeveless shirts. The table minimums are also raised on the busier nights. The pool is nice and I highly suggest spending an extra $150 for a cabana if the weather permits(December: prob. not). Location blows unless you don't mind renting a car, cab rides, or walking. If you do book a room there, request a room in the Pyramid on your first trip. Totally worth it for the easy access to the gaming floor, indoor balcony view, slanted walls, and inclinator(diagonal elevator).
For $18 I would chose the Luxor and play pokah's at MGM, Mandalay.
Speaking of Paris, impress your mother or mother in law, go to Paris and on the row of shops, get fresh fruit crepes with hand made whipped cream for breakfast... just awesome.Quote:

I predict that unless I can convince her to go do something by herself for a few hours, I will play zero poker. She doesn't approve too much of anything that involves betting over $5. Everytime we've talked about poker, she asks how much I lost ...
I try not to think of the fact that I'm going to Vegas but I'm not going to play any poker. It puts me on tilt.
Maybe I should teach her limit poker. She could probably stomach that? To teach someone limit you need to know limit, though :(
